2008 Women’s Team Race Series 65km 9.30am start
Alice Monger-Godfrey wins the round of the Team Series last year!
This coming Sunday sees the start of another season for the amazingly successful Women's Team Race Series when Nottingham hosts the opening round organised by David Standard and Beeston Road Club, sponsored by Irwin Mitchell - specialist lawyers.
With the race headquarters at the newly built sports centre Sutton Bonnington Campus the race will start at 9.30am to cover 65 kilometres; there is a full field with reserves, something that is familiar with the Team Series. Team Luciano-Kuota will be looking to claim another team win on the day and expect to win the Team Series overall but they will be against stronger competition this year over the 8 race series; certainly Fat Birds CC and Agiskoviner will want to match them.
Two weeks after this opening race sees the 2 Days of Bedford (details) stage race, the only women's stage race in the country, which will be held over the spring Bank Holiday 4-5 May; a feature of this race is the only women's team time trial but it is the final stage which is held at the Millbrook vehicle testing track - where such television programmes as 'Top Gear' are filmed - that is the major stage; described last year by commissaire Mick Ward MBE 'This stage was like being at the Giro d'Italia' and will certainly shake up the field placing; part of the Swift Global team have entered with Helen Wyman as team leader.
The season then continues with races at Newcastle on 6 July, Melbourne in Derby on 20 July and Naisby on 27 July. the second half of the season will see races being held at Darley Moor on 23 August and the years closer is at Coalville on 21 September. One more race is due to be announced. The Women's Team Race Series is unique in that, as the name suggests, it is for teams of riders with no individual riders; however if single riders who are not part of a team want to enter then they can join the Impsport team which is there just for them, race jerseys are supplied kindly donated by Impsport.
In Honour of: Sid Standard 1931 – 2003
The Women's Team Series is one of two races on the day that honour the life of Sid Standard, a President of Beeston Road Club, former President of Nottinghamshire Cyclists Touring Club and an inspiration to countless cyclists, Sid died on September 10th 2003, following an accident while out riding his bike in the hills of Derbyshire.
Every Sunday for over 40 years, Sid introduced groups of youngsters in Leicestershire and then Nottinghamshire to the joys of cycling. Many of his ‘juniors’ have gone on to distinguish themselves in the sport and he could count numerous national champions and national squad members including Olympic medal winners. In 1996 he won the Nottingham Mayors Award in recognition of his work with “The Juniors” and the CTC’s gold award for his efforts and posthumously he has been chosen as a community hero to feature on one of Nottingham’s trams.
