Elite Circuit Double-Header This Weekend

Elite Circuit Series Events, June 9/10
This coming weekend, the focus for the Elite riders in Britain will be the British Cycling Elite Circuit Series with events at the Hillingdon Cycle Circuit (West London) and Brentwood. The series is currently lead by Simon Gaywood who won the opening round in Crawley a few weeks ago but only a few points behind is Dean Downing. The Rapha Condor rider is not only the co-leader of the Premier Calendar with Chris Newton, but is also a fearsome crit rider and the action at Hillingdon and Brentwood is bound to be fast and furious.
Hillingdon and Brentwood, unlike Crawley above, should have plenty of daylight for the riders to do battle in. Here, Simon Gaywood beats Dean Downing to the line to win the opening round. Photo: Gerry McManus.
Hillingdon Grand Prix (June 9)
Event Press Release; Location: Springfield Road, Hayes, Middx. UB4 0LT
Latest: Elliott out but Russell Downing is!
A tight, twisty and not by any means a flat circuit, means 80 kilometres or 50 miles in old money, will be a long endurance test for a race expected to be ridden at speeds in excess of 30mph.
Update, June 8: The latest from organiser Stuart Benstead is that entries have risen to 84 for the Hillingdon Grand Prix. "This is near to the biggest field in the ten year existence of the circuit and certainly the best as it includes virtually every top rider in the UK. The entry is a huge increase over the 55 in last year's Hillingdon GP" Stuart told us yesterday.
Of the changes we know of, last years winner Malcom Elliott is said to be travelling to Belgium for a racing/training weekend but the exciting news from the otherside of the Sheffield divide, namely Rotherham (on the other side of the M1 to Sheffield) comes news that former British Curcuiit race champion Russell Downing has entered after his visit to the USA was scuppered when they would not award him the VISA required. Their loss is our gain! See the start sheet below for an updated rider list.
Programme
13.00 Youth racing EOL £4
13.45 2/3/4 support race EOL £16
15.00 Hillingdon GP
Previously
It does not appear that anybody is missing from the bumper entry of 77 riders for the Hillingdon GP on Saturday, 9 June, for the next round of the British Cycling Elite Circuit Race Series currently led by Simon Gaywood of Plowman Craven/Evans Cycles. Gaywood heads an 11 man team entry for Hillingdon but even with that strength in numbers, Gaywood and the rest of the PCA team will face stiff opposition from the best riders in Britain who will converge on the popular circuit.
The top 20 riders in the series (bar one or two) are entered and the extra width of the purpose built cycle race circuit at Hillingdon allows the organisers to have a larger than normal field for the 50 mile (54 laps) event. The distance of the race makes it the longest race in the series which is sure to to test both the riders speed and stamina in an event more like those on the Continent.
The main race starts at 3pm and last year was covered in 1 hour 48 minutes. Then there were 55 riders but for 2007 with many more riders expected to race, the competition for the big prizes (£2,000) should be that much greater and an even faster race is on the cards.
Prior to the Elite race, there is a support race for 2/3/4 Category cyclists at 1.45pm and Youth races at 1pm, with entries on the line welcome for both. British Cycling rules do not allow entries on the line for National Series events.
Being near Heathrow means planes flying overhead is just one of the hazards!
RIDER NOTES
Note: The surrounding conditions are difficult because of the construction of the Goals Soccer Centre (5-a-side) adjacent to the circuit. This will be completed in August but means that, in the meantime, parking is restricted and we are accommodated in slightly smaller huts than before and there is still no real means of washing although water is available and the toilet block remains. When the Goals Centre opens we will have use of its state of the art changing and shower accommodation.
There will be light refreshments in the new club hut where the administration will take place. If the weather is fine we may move the signing-on to outside the new storage building adjacent to the circuit. If the parking in the circuit area is full, it is hoped that the nearby Minet Park car park will be open (50 yards away). If not, street parking is OK but obviously hide valuables out of sight.
There will be photo finish and the circuit will be used clockwise with the finish in the long back straight. So one number should be sideways just below the right shoulder and the other in the centre of the lower back. The service area is just beyond the finish line and there will be neutral service provided by the Mann brothers of the Bath Road Club, but it is obviously preferable to have your own support in place.
For the Grand Prix there will be a £2,000 prize list for the finishing order for the top 20 placings in the BC specified ratio from £400 to £20. For the support race there will be a prize list in ratio to the number of entries, while the youth racing prizes will again be in ratio to enrtries and decided by the Hillingdon Slipstreamer club officials who are kindly handling this side of the programme for us.
The first three in the Grand Prix should immediately after the finish go to the podium for the prize presentation. In addition to the British Cycling Elite Circuit Race Series points available for the top finishers, there are two special primes for Series Points during the race. Which laps these are to be will be decided by the chief commissaire, Colin Docker.
The race distance for the Grand Prix is 80km, which is 54 laps of the Hillingdon circuit. The race distance for the support race is one hour and entries on the line are welcome for this event but not allowed by BC for the main event.

Bentwood Town Centre Racing
The day after Hillingdon, Sunday June 10, the Elite riders take to the town centre streets of Brentwood in Essex for another round of the popular circuit race series. The day will see a packed programme of racing with a National Series race for Women and another for Juniors plus other events for Youth riders before the Elite men take the course to battle for series points and the prizes in their race.
The rider lists for the events are expected to be updated but looking at the Junior race, and going on current form after the two day race in Crawley two weeks ago, the favourites so far for Crawley look to be Andy Fenn and Luke Rowe who were both on the podium at the Crawley four day. They will however for sure, face a stubborn opponent in the combined might of the Glendene team of riders.
One of the big favourites will be Adam Bythe who has won two major races in Europe this year already and rarely goes away from a stage race without winning a stage and he'll be pushed all the way by Mark McNally, another countries top young riders. But the final star for this race is undoubtably Peter Kennaugh, winner last year. He was ill for the last Junior national Series race but providing he's recovered fully from the throat problem he had, he will be the odds on favourite.
Priot to the start of the Junior race, a yellow jersey will be presented to the leader of the Series, Luke Rowe. This is a new addition to the series where the leader of the series for each event will be presented with a yellow jersey that hopefully will provide the riders battling for the series more incentive to compete hard in each of the rounds.
If the course is as it has been over the previous years, then a tight turn around the hay bails is part of the challenge of the town centre course.
Womens Race
With favourite Lizzie Armitstead reported to be away on International duty next weekend, the possible winners of the Womens race are many and varied. The favourites are also part of the up and coming group of young riders and the race is sure to be a close exciting tussle between these up and coming racers. Riders of note expected to be at the front challenging for the victory are Louise Mahe, Charlotte and Katie Colclough, Alice Monger-Godfrey, Hannah Rich, Jessica Allen, Amy Thompson and Emma and Laura Trott.
Elite Mens Race
Picking a winner from the Elite Mens Race is tricky because there are so many capable of winning that the following is just a few of them. The rider who was second last year, Rob Hayles is now on the start sheet and will be a hard man to beat on a circuit which obviously suits him.
Plowman Craven/Evans Cycles have the edge in numbers with many of their team capable of winning including the current series leader, and a former series winner, in Simon Gaywood. With others in the team such as Tony Gibb, national circuit race champion James Taylor, James McCallum (Commonwealth Games medallist in 2006) and a front runner in the Premier Calendar series Gordon McCauley, which one of them will do the deed is anybodies guess and will depend a lot on the run of the race.
Rapha Condor too have a strong team with Dean Downing, second in the series at the moment one of three possible winners with the others being Matt Talbot and Richard Wilkinson. Downing will no doubt be the teams big hope but with other cards to play gives the team various options to play. Of the rest, Merlin has a strong team also with Tom Barras showing great form this year and there is of course a young hopeful in Liam Holopham who has been a revelation in the Premier Calendar Series.
Warrick Spence is no stranger to the podium in these type of races and will also pose a threat to anyone who lets him get a gap and a young rider who showed in last years Crit championships he can go everybit as quick as the best Elites, Adam Blythe is also on the start sheet.
We can’t finish though without mentioning some major stars from the world of cycling. A rider who has twice won World Titles on the track, Chris Newton, is on the start sheet as is the series winner from last year, Malcolm Elliott. Both these are sure to be in the mix and their presence underlines the strength of this field. Another of the Pinarello line up is World Junior Scratch race champion Peter Kennaugh who like Adam Blythe has shown on more than once occassion he can mix it with the senior riders and come out on top. Kennaugh won the Junior race last year.
The final two riders of note are locals. Richard Sykes-Popham who riders for the promoting club Glendene-Biketrax won his Regional road race champion in impressive style and so has good form and of course there is another local, Olympic Academy male endurance rider, Alex Dowsett.
