Friday - Monday 25th 28th May 2007
Three of the riders on the podium in the Isle of Man Youth/Junior Tour are on the start sheet for the Sussex Tour this weekend. On the left is Rhys Lloyd while in yellow here is World Junior champion Peter Kennaugh who was also the winner of the Worcester stage race and currently leads the series from Luke Rowe (right of picture).
Preview
The 4 day In-Gear Tour of Sussex hits the road this Friday and as well as a full field of 3rd and 4th category riders in the Senior race, the Tour will also see the best of British Juniors racing hard for points in the Reynolds/Michelin Junior National Road Race Series. The event starts with a prologue on Friday evening and then has three road stages on each of the following days.
The organisers have joined forces with the De Laune Cycling club, who expressed an interest in putting something back into the sport especially for junior and youth riders and so they will be sponsoring the leaders, sprint and climbers jerseys for both the 3rd & 4th cat and the Junior event plus putting up £200 for a team prize in the Junior event. They will also be providing marshals for the event to help with the smooth running of the event.
The headquarters for the race will be the Ardingly College, College road, Ardingly, Haywards Heath, RH17 6SQ where there will be showers and changing facilities. Refreshments will also be available.
THE STAGES
Day 1 (Fri): Stage 1 - Prologue, Individual Time Trial (4 miles)
Day 2 (Sat): Stage 2 - Ardingly circuit. Juniors 6 laps = 80 miles
Day 3 (Sun): Stage 3 - Dane hill circuit. Juniors 12 laps = 64 miles
Day 4 (Mon): Stage 4 - Juniors 64.5 miles
Riding number 1 in the Junior race will be last year's Junior series winner Andrew Griffiths but who is currently lying in fourth place in the competition. Favourites are Peter Kennaugh and Adam Blythe. Kennaugh leads the series and has won two stage races in the series so far, the Isle of Man Youth Tour and the Tour of Worcestor.
Blythe meanwhile is 6th in the series but after winning the Axel Tour in Holland last weekend, his form is obviously on fire and although he hasn't been as successful in Britain as he has in Europe, nobody will give him an inch and he'll be well marked.
Luke Rowe meanwhile, 2nd in the series, is also a major contender for this race after good podium performances in the Isle of Man Youth Tour and the Tour of Worcester. The field may not be a full field but it is a quality one because as well as the aforementioned riders, there are plenty of others like Mark McNally, Rhys Lloyd, Sam Webster, Andrew Fenn and Richard Meadows to name but a few who could steal a stage away from the favourites if given half a chance.
