Velo Club Lincoln Cycling Club presents
THE 51st LINCOLN GRAND PRIX
Round 4 of the Premier Calendar (Home Page)
Two riders who may well be the challengers for podium places, Matt Stephens and Robin Sharman who have both been on the podium, seen here at the Archer Grand Prix a month ago.
Introduction
With a field of almost 140 riders, picking a winner is never going to be easy especially with a few unknown Aussies in there but of all the riders on the start sheet, there are a few that stand out as likely victors and none is more of a favourite than Malcolm Elliot.
He's won at Lincoln before, even if it was a decade or two ago and in recent years has been on the podium too so he knows the course and has a good track record there. He seems to be climbing better than ever as well and after last weeks win in the Chas Messenger, is obviously in very good form. His team though, which controlled the Chas Messenger, won't have it all their own way at the Lincoln with many strong squads sure to make their presence felt.
Team FRF Couriers contain a string of Australians whilst Agisko-Dart will be looking to their inform riders to challenge the likes of Elliot and co as they did at the Chas Messenger. The biggest challenge though looks like it will come from the Recycling.co.uk team who had a stage win in France last week through Kristain House and after a few days rest, who knows which of their riders will lead their challenge as all are capable of mounting the podium.
Chris Newton is a former winner and may well be ready to get back to winning form on the road after his time in France whilst how can anyone who saw the 2004 edition forget the struggle that Robin Sharman put up before having to settle for second place. Ben Greenwood could also pose a surprise challenge after a stage race in Italy and of all the teams, its the men in green who may well dominate the event.
There will as always though be riders willing to take advantage of the presence of a strong team or two in the race. Riders such as Matt Stephens and David Clarke who have the form this year to take the race to the other favourites. And there is Rob Hayles who will be looking to provide his local sponsors with some publicity in one the countries biggest road races. With the distance having been reduced though, there may well be many more riders in contention and after many weeks since the last Premier Calendar event, it will great to see the best of British fighting it out in front of the TV cameras on local roads. British Cycling will of course be there...
