Last Years Report: Rutland - Melton CiCLE Classic
The Premier Calendar springs to life in the next two weeks - on the 7th of May we have the long running classic around the historic city of Lincoln (preview to come) and the week after, something completely different in the 'Paris-Roubaix' style Rutland-Melton CiCLE Classic which returns after a mega successful introduction last year.

The field for the Rutland-Melton CiCLE Classic is like a who's who of British road racing with so many favourites having entered it's impossible to pick a sure fire winner. Wearing number 1 is Commonwealth Games Team Pursuit champion Chris Newton and he's part of a very strong line up from Recycling.co.uk who are preparing in a stage race in France at the moment. Any number of them could win the race including Robin Sharman, Ben Greenwood, Kristian House, Evan Oliphant and Dale Appleby. As strong as their team is though, there are many many challengers and these include riders from overseas like Aussie Peter McDonald (Team FRF Carravello\Camplins(Lincoln) and those in his team.
Last years double World Champion Rob Hayles (Team KLR\Parker Int), who looked in such good form at the World titles in Bordeaux two weeks ago, will be fresh and raring to go after a break in the south of France with his wife Vicki and daughter Maddy. At the Archer GP recently, Phil Dixon (ScienceinSport.com) was there competing for the top spots at the end and will surely be a challenger here, as will another top mountain bike and cyclo-cross rider in Ian Wilkinson who'll no doubt find the rough roads to his liking.
One squad with a certain contender is Plowman Craven who have the rider who was second in the Archer, Malclom Elliot and was second in an Irish event this week. He's backed up by Tony Gibb and several other team-mates so will have plenty of support. Also on the start sheet is Jonathan Dayus who has been victor over similar type of roads in a stage race in Scandinavia and is also currently doing well in a stage race in France, finishing 8th on a stage yesterday. Agisko-Dart send a strong outfit including Duncan Urquhart and Kevin Dawson whilst Glendene have notables Mark McKay and Ben Hallam. Local James Cambridge is another expected to be a contender for a podium finish.
Team Milton Keynes have Roy Chamberlain heading their line up whilst Matthew Stephens of Sigma Sport returns and his form is looking very good if the recent results are anything to go by. Two riders who dominated the Premier Calendar for many years, John Tanner & Mark Lovatt (Planet X\Cycling Plus) are entered prior to going to Ireland for the RAS and a rider well known for his ability off road, Nick Craig (Scott UK) is also sure to be a crowd favourite.
No doubt in the big field there are many others who could spring a surprise and if the event last year is still talked about, the one this year with a bigger and stronger field is sure to be an even bigger hit with the spectators. And don't forget it will be on Cycling.TV where the action is sure make the event one of the most interesting of the year.
