THE 51st LINCOLN GRAND PRIX

Sunday, May 7th, 2006; 86 mile Round 4 of the Premier Calendar

Now only a few weeks away, the buildup to the next round of the British Cycling Premier Calendar, the Lincoln Grand Prix, continues with a list of riders taking part. British Cycling will have a preview of the event in the coming week.

Riders will do anything to avoid riding the cobbles -- especially wet ones!

Welcome to the Lincoln Grand Prix
from Ian Emmerson OBE, Race Organiser

On behalf of the Velo Club Lincoln and Lincoln City Council, Welcome to the 51st edition of the Lincoln Grand Prix Cycle Race. Last year the race reached the coveted milestone of 50 consecutive editions and we now move on in to the second half century with a slightly revised race with the distance reduced by 2 laps but nonetheless an exciting 86 miles race before us.

The entry list features two strong foreign teams from Australia and Ireland but they will be up against the best of British competition over the usual 8 mile circuit and 11 climbs of the now famous Michaelgate climb which can be guaranteed to sort out who are the main contenders as the laps progress.

Lincoln welcomes Commonwealth Games Gold Medallists Rob Hayles and Chris Newton back to the event. Chris won the race six years ago in 2000, whilst Rob had bad luck last year when he was forced to retire with mechanical problems. Other previous winners in the 128 strong field are Malcolm Elliott (1983) and Kevin Dawson (1996). Russell and Dean Downing, first and second last year, are missing on continental soil, but watch out for Malcolm who has vowed to win the event again 23 years after his first victory!

The Grand Prix is a counting event in the season long British Cycling Premier Calendar and the current top 3 riders in the competition Kristian House, Matthew Stephens and Ben Greenwood are on the start list together with most of the 53 riders already in the points table.

Picking a race winner is not easy and it will probably take quite a few of the 11 laps before a possible victor shows his form, so be prepared for a great cat and mouse chase around the circuit before the final dash to the line after the 11th climb of Michaelgate.

Back in Lincoln for the third year running is Cycling.TV who will again be recording the Grand Prix for showing both on Eurosport the following weekend and on their web site www.cycling.tv Last years 52 minute Eurosport film was excellent and this year all the Premier Calendar series events are being featured.

Events like this are not possible without the support of Councils, Police and Sponsors who together with a small army of race officials, stewards, medics and mechanics make the wheels go round smoothly. My thanks go to each of these for the part they play to make the Lincoln Grand Prix Britain's favourite one day classic.

Whether you are here today as a rider or spectator or one of the important cogs in the organisation, we hope you enjoy the day and hope you will all come back again.
