Sigma Sport Easter 3 Day RR
11th -13th April; The Surrey Cycle Racing League
Report & Pictures: Graham Robins (www.grahamrobins.net)
The Easter three day race sponsored by Sigma Sport comprises two separate races on the same course each day. The morning sees the category 3 riders race the course and in the afternoon, the category 1-2-3’s. Each day was promoted a different club -- day one was CC Basingstoke; day 2 was Farnborough & Camberley and day 3 by agiskoviner.com.
The first day was around the ‘Milland Hill’ circuit near the village of rake on the West Sussex, Hampshire border. A 60 mile course around a 7˝ mile route. The main feature of the course was the lung busting climb up the 25% ramp within a short distance of the finish line. Overnight rain and early morning fog made the course damp, but the race started dry if a little chilly.
Category 3 Event
Day 1: The peloton all sat together deciding to keep warm on the first couple of laps. Two riders did get away for about 2˝ laps but the field slowly brought them back as they tired with one lap to go. The steep climb was doing its best to split the field but the peloton remained strong and together.
As the peloton took the bell, it started to rain, and the rain got heavier, making the climb greasy. As they arrived at the climb for the last time, someone needed to make a break and that person was Martin Williamson from London Dynamo. Martin’s winning victory was 11 seconds, with all the gain coming between the summit of the climb and the finish line. Stewart Martin from Kingston wheelers was second and Alexander Macmin from Norwood Paragon a further 2 secs down.
Rider Quote: Martin Williamson: “It was a pretty straightforward race for us. Our team, London Dynamo, got in an early break that got away for about three laps so we didn’t have to do a much work but they were brought back. Then we fancied our chances on the hill at the end of the race so we tried to keep it together” Had you planned when you were going to make your move? “Only by chatting as the race went on. We thought we had a good chance. We tried to close everything down. But then on the last lap, a few got away and I got in a break with three others and chased them down. We got a decent gap and I was able to drop those on the hill and get away for the win”.
Day 2: The second day was around the Cutmill course just south of Farnham. Riders completing 7˝ laps of a fairly flattish course with only a small hill to contend with. The riders would complete 60 miles. With London Dynamo holding the yellow jersey they were bound to control the race.
The leader Martin Williamson in yellow and the green point’s jersey holder managed to get away with a group for about three laps but they were all pulled back together for a bunch sprint finish. The stage winner was Steve Callard from Norwood Paragon CC, second Richard Mason from Fit For and David Creeggan from VC Medon. David Creeggan retained the green points jersey and the yellow jersey staying with Martin Williamson.

Day 3: The third day dawned in bright sunlight after the early morning fog burnt off. The race started in glories sunshine something unseen on an Easter Monday for many a year. The race was 4˝ laps of a 12˝ miles of a fairly flattish course with just a couple of ‘little’ bumps to get up.
With London Dynamo holding the yellow jersey, it was always theirs to lose. Soon after the start, one lone rider Mark Williams from VelocityBikes CC got away and opened up a large gap of over 1min 30secs. The peloton was happy to let him go as he was way down on GC. Winner was Drew Holms from In Gear Development squad, second was Michael Bisson from DH Cyclesport.co.uk and third was Richard Moss from Beyond Mountain Bikes, all given the same time.
A crash in the finish straight did not affect the result although two riders were hurt and a few limped across the line with small cuts. One rider from London Dynamo had a suspected shoulder injury while the other rider was suffering mainly from cramping.
The overall top three after three days of excellent riding is as follows:
1st Martin Williamson London Dynamo
2nd Stewart Martin Kingston Wheelers @40 secs
3rd Niall Digby Sigma Sport RT @2min 27secs
Category 1/2/3 Race
Day 1: After the morning rain had gone the afternoon race was a little drier. After a sedate first lap, two riders jumped away, Douglas Dewy closely watched by a rider from London Dynamo and the peloton a further 12 seconds down. On the next lap, with Dewy and his shadow away, another small group of three broke free of the group a further 12 seconds down, with the peloton a further 40 seconds down.
Over the next lap a couple of riders from Pendragon Kalas were driving hard at the front not making too much headway. As they race reached the hill for the last time, Richard Hoult from London Dynamo pulled away from Douglas Dewey from Pendragon Kalas with David Sinclair from GWR, the winning margin was 2 seconds with Sinclair @11 secs
Day 2: The day was awful weather wise. Riders who found themselves on the outside of the peloton were picking up the mud and punctures were the name of the day with the neutral service changing five on the first lap. By the end of the stage the car only had four useable to hand.
On lookers said you could tell which riders were on the inside and those on the outside by the state of the kit. The most significant incident of the day was the points leader Dave Creeggan punctured while leading on the last lap and still managed to come in third, without the puncture he would have won the stage.

Day 3: A quiet race to begin with and whilst no one team wanted to make the break, London Dynamo were watching all the action from a couple of rows back protecting the yellow jersey. After a couple of laps, a group of about thirteen got away and they started to work together.
A small group of three were 15 seconds behind them with another three together at 3seconds and then the peloton containing the yellow and green jerseys at 29seconds.Next lap, the race came back together with two slightly away at 2 seconds. On that lap, the group of thirteen became twelve again and they opened a gap of 1min 40secs. With one to go, a Pendragon Kalas rider got a small gap of 4 seconds over the chasing goup with the peloton a further 1minute 4 seconds down.
As the race approached the finish, riders were spread across the road all heads down eyes fixed on the finish line. The race could have been won by any one of six riders but Sam Allen, a 2nd Cat. Junior, just kept sprinting and pulled off a fantastic win to the delight of his father.

Post Race Quotes
Sam Allen winner of stage 3: “with 1k to go, I got on Steve Calland’s wheel and when he kicked I followed and sprinted to the win”
Steve Calland (Norwood Paragon) “We are a really small team, so we had to work quite sensibly. London dynamo had it all to lose today, we just piggy backed on their work. Yesterday (Sunday) was the highlight, I had a really good ride, and if I came away with nothing I would of been happy."
Richard Hoult (London Dynamo) 2nd overall “I only attacked once in the three days, got lucky and my team helped me defend it. We weren’t strong enough in the sprints and that’s very difficult to defend against. With the time bonuses being so big, without them we would have won overall. This was a total team effort, without them I would of not been anywhere."
Douglas Dewey (Pendragon Kalas) “I started off quite aggressively on the first day, got in an early break that didn’t stick. The second day was quite frustrating as London dynamo were defending a lead and pretty much neutralised the race. Today was very frustrating for me, I sat in the peloton as my team mates were up the road, and they managed to defend my point jersey."
