2008 British Cycling Regional RR Championships

For one of the biggest days of the year on the road racing calendar, British Cycling looks at each of the races for the Regional Road Race championships in pictures and words. | West Midlands Road Race Championships (Staffordshire GP) |
Run over 142 Kms, this race fragmented from the start. David Watson and Paul Dring pulled away to gain a 2 minute and 30 second lead over the bunch in the early laps. Mid race they were joined by Richard Cartland and Kieran Frend. After a few counter attacks in the later stages of the race they were joined by the eventual winner Simon Holt and Martin Ford with Holt winning the title and making it three for Rapha Condor/Recycling on the day.

Going one better than his Team Halfords Bikehut teammate Tom Southam did in the South West who was second in his regional championship, Olympic medallist Rob Hayles showed he was the king in the North West when he won that Regional Road Race championship from hard man Mark Lovatt, a legend in the sport of road racing in this country. Third was Ian Bibby.
| Central Region Road Championship |
After an awesome medal in the 10 Time Trial championship recently which has surprised many of the sports stars, the former World Championship Silver medallist on the track, showed his versatility when he joined a large group of a dozen or more riders which dominated the Central region road race championship. The rider known for his fierce sprint however didn't leave anything to chance for the finish up the steep and long climb into Cublington by going it alone and finishing out of gas on the line. Second was Matt Jones and third was Paul Delahunty.

Leaving breakway companion with final lap of the new Tunstall circuit at Bedale near Northallerton, Colin Humphrey took the lone win in atrocious conditions to take the North East title.
| East Midlands Road Race Championships |
Team Lacuna rider Dave Clarke won the East Midlands Road Race championship today when he beat Matt Jennings and Kieth Haddon to the finish.
| Yorkshire Region Road Race Championships |
Rapha Condor/Recycling rider Dean Downing defended his title inYorkshire when he won the race in North Yorkshire which was a wet cold and very hilly affair. Second was Pearl Izumi's Liam Holohan and third the evergreen Kevin Dawson who at one stage was looking like the victor until Downing and Holohan crossed to him with a lap to go.
| South West Road Race Championships |
On a dry and fine day in the South West, Sport Beans rider Marcin Biablocki was the winner of the regions road race championship when he got away from Tom Southam (Halfords Bikehut) in the closing stages. Also alone after a tough race on an even tougher circuit was James Williams. Guy Wilkin was the Junior winner.

The Southern Region road race championship has been won by David Sinclair of Team Europe. Sinclair finished ahead of British champion mountain biker Oli Beckingsale of Team Giant whilst Grant Bayton of Sport Beans was third.
| Welsh Championships Road Race Championships |
The 2008 Welsh Road Race Championships, sponsored by Iwan Williams Estate Agents and Cawley Bros Haulage both from Llanrwst, took place on Sunday 1st June on a hilly course through Denbigh, Brenig and Ruthin. Winner of the Senior title was Rob Partridge ahead of Rhys Lloyd and Richard Harris.
| Eastern Regional Road Race Championship |
In the East of the country, Adam Norris (Heron Cyclesport) backed up his National Junior RR championship wina few years ago with a win in his regions championship. Adam beat Ben Thompson (Glendene) and Dennis van Gaveren (Lotto Olympia Team Interbike)
| South East Regional Men's Championship 2008 |
Down in the South East of the country, winner of the regional title was Garry Dodd from the Sigma Sport racing team. Dodd, a prolific winner in that part of the country, finished ahead of Chris McNamara (Wildside RT) and Richard Hoult (London Dynamo)
