Scottish Provident Youth League (Round 5)

On the day that the Isle of Man's Mark Cavendish won a stage of the Giro d'Italia stage, Tuesday, young riders in the Isle of Man Scottish Provident Youth league (where Mark was perfecting his sprint skills not that many years ago) were racing hard with an eye on following in his footsteps. A total of 357 youngsters competed in round five of Team Scottish Provident Isle of Man's youth league, staged at the National Sports Centre in Douglas last Tuesday night

In the novices class Thomas Halliwell outsprinted Shellan Leeming to pick up maximum points for the second week in succession. Joshua Dudley was a solid third and Finian Gelder led in Corrin Leeming, Emily Kinley, Jack Elliott, Milly Duggua and Ross Cameron for fourth. Annabel Kneale beat Jonathan Corlett and Rebecca Hull to the line for the final place on the top ten leader board.

Percy Hampton had to fight off a strong challenge from Callum Smith before securing his third victory in the born 2003 & later age group. Matthew Black grabbed third ahead of top girl Madison Nicol and Ben Grainger got the better of Owen Dooley for fifth.

Pre-race favourite Charlie Gibson held onto his unbeaten record in the born 2002 category. Aaron Lund made a bold attempt to stay with the leader but eventually had to give way and settle for second place. Robert Kissack held off Tom Cain for third and Joshua Mills overtook Thomas Kermode in the final few metres to snatch fifth. Leading girl Charlotte Watson pipped Lucas Parker and Ben Haworth for seventh spot.

Surby's Juan Kneen did well to edge out Adam Scarffe and Jake Vance for his maiden win in the born 2001 event. Round four winner Amelia Sharpe took fourth ahead of Matthew Flint, Cullen Gell, Rory Donegan and Daniel Lane. Relative newcomer Dean Rea was a good ninth and Connor Cooke tenth.

Taking the honours in a four-up sprint finish, Luke Murray ended twin brother Tom's three week winning run in the born 2000 class. Sam Batey was third and Thomas Bostock fourth, with Thomas Longden and Josh Smith just off the back in fifth and sixth places respectively. Joseph Corkish headed the main chasing group home for seventh.

In the born 1999 race Marcus Simpson made an early solo bid for glory. He opened a small gap but was eventually reeled in by Conor Davies, who went on to win by a clear margin. Eleanor Davies, Joseph Glover and Kaitlin Slack contested the sprint for third, with the judges unable to separate Davies and Glover as they crossed the line. Liam McCann was a lonely sixth and Tara Ferguson ousted Charlotte Dougherty for seventh.

Matthew Draper rode clear of breakaway companions Owen Dudley, Brody Hewison and Rory McCann on the last lap to notch up his fifth straight success in the born 1998 class. Jordan Corkish was fifth and Ben Cunningham won the battle for sixth from Joshua Sharpe, Dan Watterson and Nathan Hinks. The girls' prize went to Amy Kinley in tenth position.

A leading group of seven riders fought it out at the end of the born 1997-95 three lapper, with Matthew Davies just having the edge over Anna Christian. Eleanor Stokoe was third followed by Ashley Faragher, Laura Kinley, Jamie Everitt and Juan Hunter. The ever improving Oliver Chambers was a very creditable eighth.

After instigating the race winning move on the third lap of the U10 / U12 racing bikes, Matthew Bostock was too fast for breakaway partners Matthew Davies, Leon Mazzone and Jamie Dudley in the final gallop for the line. Owen Dudley was the first of the under 10's in an excellent fifth place and Laura Kinley the best girl in eighth spot.

The U14 / U16 racing bikes event was run at a fast and furious pace with plenty of attacks. Jack Wolstencroft, Alex Haddock, Adam Johnson, Thomas Mazzone and Joshua Knights were particularly active during the race, but ultimately unable to get that all-important break. The outcome was eventually decided in a sprint finish which Johnson won from Mazzone and Wolstencroft. Top Manx motocrosser Jamie McCanney was a very impressive fourth on his comeback to cycle racing at the NSC and newcomer Joe Kelly rode well to finish eighth in his first outing. Lucy Johnson was the first girl home in fourteenth place.
