Castle Combe Summer Series

A very overcast night and a clash with racing at Ilton meant fewer riders this evening compared to the 118 seniors and 41 Youth riders from last weeks programme. However, the racing was fierce with the 4th cats not getting caught until less than 5 laps to the finish. Josh Papworth showed that the 3rd cats can mix it with a very fine 2nd place whilst Jon Paine continued his impressive season with another 3rd place. An interesting addition to the 4th cat field was ex England rugby star and now coach at Gloucester Dean Ryan.
Dean’s son Conor, riding for Cheltenham & City, attacked from the gun in the Under 16 event and despite a similarly heroic chase from Jamie Richardson Paige, Ryan maintained the front position to the line. As usual the Under 8’s fielded the most riders in the Youth categories with Megan James continuing her impressive form and taking another win from Pfeiffer Georgi. Rob Higgs and Ashley Hutchison also maintained there recent form to both win their respective categories respectively.
For 2008, their will be an overall prize list and trophy for the Youth categories in addition to prizes on the night. The popularity of the series started some five years ago now has lead the instigators to look into promoting some road races in 2009 to augment the summer series at Castle Combe. This event was the third in the fifteen race series and with Chippenham Wheelers providing Go Ride activities prior to the racing activities cycling in the West Country looks to be in a healthy position.
