Now in its fifth year, this stage race that honours Chas Messenger has moved up to Premier Calendar status thanks to the sponsorship of Plowman Craven, Arctic Air Conditioning, Kingfisher Beer, Sport and Publicity and Phil Corley Cycles. British Cycling is at the race to bring back reports and pictures of the action.

On day 1 of the Chas Messenger Two Day, there were two stages starting with a 5 kilometre time trial which was won by Rob Hayles from Tony Gibb and Russell Downing. After an hours break, the riders were on their bikes again for a 120 kilometre stage around the picturesque Claydon set of villages. Winner of this stage was Russell Downing who turned a 13 second deficit on Rob Hayles into a 14 second lead over Matt Higgins who now lies second overall from Rob Hayles in third at 19 seconds.

Russell Downing (Pinarello RT) scored his second stage win of the weekend and took overall victory in the Chas Messenger 2-Day road race in Buckinghamshire on Sunday May 4th. Downing’s final stage win was at the expense of Tom Last (Kinesis RT) who had prematurely raised his arms in victory only to see Downing ride up the inside to snatch the victory by a quarter of a wheel in the bunch sprint.
