CDNW Youth League

19 April 2008

Salt Ayre, Lancaster

Report: Matt Winston/Images Tony Lyons

One Hundred and twenty four riders took to the start of the second round of the CDNW Youth League at Salt Ayre up in Lancaster. This was a record number of riders for a one day youth race in the North West. The format of the league for day 2 of the 2008 season was the same as in previous races with each rider taking part in a one lap time trial followed by a Crit race for each age group.

There were eight entries for the under 8 category. Taking the victory in the time trial by one second was Kim Baptista (Eastlands Velo). Kim cruised around the circuit in a time of 2minutes 58 seconds. Second place went to Solomon Kerfoot Robson (Rhos On Sea) who was one of thirteen riders who had made the trip from North Wales. Making up the top three in third place was Dan Gibson (Liverpool Century)

The under 8's race was combined with the under 10's for the circuit race and the distance was 5 laps of racing which with a howling head wind down the home/finish straight was going to be tough for the youngest riders in the league. The top three for the circuit race was the same as the time trial with Kim Baptista taking the win from Solomon Kerfoot Robson and Dan Gibson in third place.

Sixteen riders lined up for the time trial in the under 10's category each going off at 30 second intervals, Leighton Sharman (Liverpool Century) was the quickest rider around the circuit in a time of 2 minutes 30seconds. Second place went to Matthew Walls (Eastlands Velo) in a time of 2minutes 34seconds and third place went to one of the Yorkshire riders that had made the long journey to Lancaster, Reece Wood (Wakefield Tri) recorded a time of 2minutes 43seconds.

First and second place was reversed in the crit with Matthew Walls taking the victory from Leighton Sharman and Reece Wood was consistent with two third places. This meant that the top riders were tied for 1st place on 99points each. However the victory went to Leighton because of his quicker time in the time trial.

Sam Turton (Ribble Valley Juniors) in the under 12 category recorded the fastest time of the day so far to win the under 12's time trial in a time of 2 minutes and 18 seconds, second place went to Bryn Davies (Eastlands Velo) who put a cracking ride in to secure 2nd place in a time of 2 minutes 19 seconds and third place was a tie in a time of 2 minutes 25seconds between Leon Mazzone (Team Scottish Provident) and Dylan Kerfoot Robson (Rhos On Sea)

Sam Turton also rode away from the rest during the circuit race over ten laps when he waited until a couple of laps to go before making his move and staying away alone until the finish to win the race and the day overall. Second place went to Christian Braybrooke (Eastlands Velo) and third place in the bunch went to Leon Mazzone. The top three overall on the day went to Sam Turton in first, Leon Mazzone in second and Bryn Davies in third.

Thirty Five riders signed on for the start of the Under 14's race and there was a familiar winner in that category, that of Jake Ragan who went under the two minute barrier for the first time on the day with a time of 1 minute 56 seconds, a time of which would have put him well within the top ten in the under 16s. Second place went to Ryan Mullen (Rhos On Sea) and third place with a time of 2minutes 4seconds went to Chris Latham (Eastlands Velo)

Jake Ragan took the double in the circuit race which was marred by a nasty crash involving three riders, Jordan Rigby, Jack Sadler and Lucy Johnson. The race had to be black flagged whilst an ambulance came to help the injured. Jack Sadler came off worse of the three suffering a broken arm, which is a real shame especially having just recovered from a broken collarbone. Our thoughts are with last year's national under 12 champion and the other riders for a speedy recovery.

Once the race was re-started Jake Ragan took the victory with Chris Latham coming second and Matthew Rotherham completing a one-two-three for Eastlands Velo. Jake Ragan finished first overall with Chris Latham second and Josh Penrice also Eastlands Velo finishing third overall.

Lewis Balyckyi (Ribble Valley Juniors) set the fastest time of the day overall in a time of 1minute 50seconds beating the twins Adam and Simon Yates who amazingly both recorded the same time. The time being 1 minute 51seconds.

The circuit race was run at a reduced distance because of the time the ambulance took in the under 14's race and restrictions on using the circuit once the football kicked off. However it was as exciting as ever especially as the strong head wind helped to keep the attacks at bay. As soon as any attacks were made the strong under 16's closed them down straight away. Once the bell rang a bunch sprint was inevitable. Looking down the long finish straight as the riders came towards the finish it was Lewis Balyckyi that was at the head of affairs with a mass of Sportcity Velo jerseys surrounding him.

As the riders approached the finish Lewis had opened up the sprint and won by a couple of bike lengths having time to raise one hand from his handlebars and celebrate a good strong sprint. Jonathan Knox (Kent Valley) took second in the bunch sprint with a strong ride and Martin Woffindin (Sportcity Velo) made up the top three. A special mention to Sophie Gore (Sportcity Velo) who came across the line in 10th place mixing it with the lads up the final straight in the sprint finish. Although its fair to say without Ivor Armstrong operating the camera it would have been impossible to work out the result of that bunch sprint.

The overall in the under 16's at the end of the day was Lewis Balyckyi first, Adam Yates 2nd and Josh Edmondson (Glendene CC) having a consistent ride with two 6th places to take 3rd overall.

Matt Winston writes - A huge thank you to all the officials who made the day run very smoothly and well done to all the riders who made the effort in some tough conditions. See you all on the 31st May at Clayton Vale
