Isle Of Man Youth League Gets Off To A Record Breaking Start

An all-time record total of 389 competitors turned out at the National Sports Centre in Douglas Isle of Man last Tuesday night for the opening round of Team Scottish Provident Isle of Man's 2008 Youth League.

In the novices class Issac Kirk took the honours ahead of twin brothers Joshua and Cameron Dudley, who were second and third respectively. Finian Gelder outsprinted Hayden Waddington and leading girl Lauren Duncan for fourth, with Milly Duggua leading the rest of the large field home in seventh position. Rebecca Hull, Joshua Haswell and Matthew O'Neill completed the top ten leader board.

Matthew Black set the pace in the 'born 2003 and later age group', taking the chequered flag with a clear advantage over runner-up Callum Smith. Percy Hampton held off Cameron Ross for third and Ben Grainger made the long trip from Andreas worthwhile to claim fifth ahead of Owen Dooley. The girls' prize went to Rose Turner in fourteenth spot.

Reigning champion Charlie Gibson led from start to finish to claim maximum points in the 'born 2002' category. Nicholas Peniata won a race-long battle with Tom Cain for second and Charlotte Watson was the top girl in fourth place, Blae Cain was a good fifth and Alastair Flint held off the fast finishing Joshua Mills and Aaron Lund to grab sixth.

In the 'born 2001' race Matthew Flint got the better of breakaway partners Amelia Sharpe, Juan Kneen and Adam Scarffe for a well deserved victory. Rory Donegan trailled in for fifth and Thomas Chatel overtook newcomer Daniel Lane on the final lap for sixth. Jacob Phair was eighth and Jessica Morris the second girl in ninth place.

Thomas Bostock came from behind to edge out Sam Batey and Luke Murray in the sprint finish to the 'born 2000' event. Tom Murray crossed the line ahead of Josh Smith for fourth and Tommasz Boruch managed to stay in front of Joseph Corkish and Amelia Sharpe, the top girl, for sixth. Arthur Bankes-Jones and Antony Coward headed the chasing bunch home in ninth and tenth positions.

After riding clear on the penultimate lap, Conor Davies time trialed to a fine solo victory in the born 1999 class. Joseph Glover went off in pursuit but was unable to make any significant inroads into Conor's lead and had to settle for second place. Daniel Scarffe took the gallop for the final place on the podium from Eleanor Davies (1st girl) and Alex Cain.

Recently crowned Terry Dolan Circuit Race champion Matthew Draper proved to be too strong for Owen Dudley in the closing stages of the 'born 1998' three lapper. Brody Hewison did well to catch Dudley on the last lap but lost out in the final dash for the line. Amy Kinley was the first girl in ninth place.

Six riders, including three girls, contested the sprint at the end of the 'born 1997-95' grouping, with Matthew Davies getting the verdict over Ashley Faragher, Laura Kinley, Anna Christian, Tamara Preskey and Jamie Everitt. Breeshey Cain beat Ben Millard and Sophie Black in the battle for seventh.

The U/10 & U/12 racing bikes provided some of the best entertainment of the night. A group of five riders made an early break for glory and were never caught. At the finish it was Matthew Davies who took the flag for his second success of the meeting. Leon Mazzone was a close second followed by Jamie Dudley, Matthew Bostock and Owen Dudley, who was the best of the U/10's. Matthew Draper came in ahead of Laura Kinley and Victoria Kinrade to secure sixth position, with racing bike novice Jacob Glover an excellent ninth.

Finally, Thomas Mazzone produced a powerful sprint to win the U/14 & U/16 racing bikes from Adam Johnson and the much improved Jack Wolstencroft. Brothers Warwick and John Sanderson were fourth and fifth just ahead of top girl Alicia Corlett in an impressive sixth place. Alex Haddock took the U/14's award in eighth position and newcomer George Doyle was a good eighth in his first ever race at the NSC.
