Additional Report - GWR At Junior Opener
The race leaves the start
The first round of the British 2008 Cycling National Junior Series was held over the weekend around Abergavenny and the Brecon Beacons. The first day saw appalling weather conditions during each stage but this didn't deter the enthusiasm of the top British Junior riders.
Erick Rowsell (Team Corridori) had a four second advantage over his nearest rival Mark Christian (Team Isle of Man) after the stage one 2.6km Time Trial in a time of 4 minutes and 27 seconds, closely followed by Andrew Fenn (Dolan RT) and Tom Walker (Torg-Colnago) a further second slower.
Unfortunately, Rowsell could not repeat the win in stage two and only managed third place. Despite the deluge of rain the stage two 85km Circuit race was eventually won by Tom Walker (Torq-Colnago) after breaking away with Peter Dibben (GWRTeam/Scott Wilson/Giant). This meant that Tom Walker would start the final stage with a slender lead of 8 second advantage over Erick Rowsell and 15 second on Peter Dibben.
Pre Race Quotes:
Erick Rowsell - Team Corridori
"I am going to concentrate on the overall GC today, rather than the King of the Mountains if I get it, it will be a bonus. It's the Yellow Jersey that I am really after; there are quite few big hills in today's race so I think it will split up quite a lot.
Speaking about yesterdays races, Erick states;
"Yesterday I picked up the KOM points quite by chance really I kept at the front chasing down the breaks, so I managed to get a lot of seconds and thirds, the weather wasn't very good but I like those hard kind of conditions."
Luke Rowe - Rapha Condor
"I think looking at the course profile, the race will split into bits, 22 seconds over some of those climbs is nothing really and I still consider myself very much in the race and I'm out for the win."
"Yesterday we all finished like drowned rats, but it made for good racing, some riders don't like the rain so much, but the riders were sensible on corners."
Peter Dibben - GWR Team/Scott Wilson/Giant
"I not really sure what I will do today as I'm not a strong climber so I hope to go for the Sprints and try and keep up with the group over the hills and try to defend my position rather than attacking."
"Yesterday was good although it was cold towards the end of the race I attacked with 20 miles to go and took Tom Walker with me and we worked well to the finish we had a gap of 1.25 but it kept coming down, I was so cold I couldn't turn my legs at the end so we just rolled in together."
Tom Walker - Torq-Colnago
"I feel good, I just need to cover the breaks really and make sure no one gets away and stay near the front. Yesterday went really well for me Peter Dibben attacked and I went with them and we managed to hold on, the weather didn't really affect me that much."
Race Report:
Erick Rowsell goes on an early attack
Bright and dry conditions prevailed for the start of the 95km hilly road stage three on day two. The slender time gaps between the top five riders in the GC ensured that the final stage and overall win would go down to the last kilo.
A steady pace was set from the start keeping everyone together, but Peter Dibben (GWRTeam/Scott Wilson/Giant) and Jack Kirk (Wyre Forest CRC) attacked off the front of the Peleton just before Sprint Prime Flag to take the points. The Peleton soon reformed but as they started climb towards the KOM prime at Pengenffordd a small group of 5 riders made attempted to breakaway but the Peleton were quick to react and soon reeled them back in.
Rowsell on the main climb, with Rowe on his wheel
Taking advantage of this early hard climb Luke Rowe (Rahpha Condor/Recycling) and Erick Rowsell (Team Corridori) battled it out for the KOM prime points and Rowsell taking the prime points, and not missing this opportunity 11 further riders managed to escape the Peleton and build a significant lead of 54 seconds. These were Mark Christian (Team Isle of Man), Andrew Fenn (Dolan RT), Joe Perret (Glendene CC/Biketrax JT), George Atkins (Pearl Izumi/Planet X/High 5), Sam Redding (GWRTeam/Scott Wilson/Giant), Sandy King (GWRTeam/Scott Wilson/Giant), Dillon Byrne (Probikeit.com), Mike Cumming (Macclesfield Whlrs), Jack Kirk (Wyre Forest CRC), Dom Jelfs (MJS Racing) and Andrew Williams (Cwmcarn Paragon RC)
The leading group of 13 riders continued to build on their advantage which increased to over 2 minutes. Tom Walker (Torq-Colnago) wearing the yellow jersey unfortunately missed the move and remained in the Peleton for the rest of the race.
The look on off-road specialst Alex Paton's face shows just how hard the climb is
The last successful break of the day came on the very hard climb at Defynnog, with 2.12 to the Peleton showing on the blackboard, once again Erick Rowsell (Team Corridori) and Luke Rowe (Rahpha Condor/Recycling), powered their way to the top and the KOM prime points and were joined by Mark Christian (Team Isle of Man) as they pulled away from the now splintering field behind them. Andrew Fenn (Dolan RT) attempted to bridge the gap to the leading riders while Joe Perret (Glendene CC/Biketrax JT), George Atkins (Pearl Izumi/Planet X/High 5), Sam Redding (GWRTeam/Scott Wilson/Giant), slipped back to 1 minute 22 seconds behind the leaders, with the remaining 6 riders falling further behind but were never caught by the Peleton.
Luke Rowe celebrates as he crosses the line first
The three leading riders now worked hard and consistently together, each taking a turn at the head to maintain their lead over the following field. But with one kilometre to go their battle to the finish began, and was won in convincing style by Luke Rowe (Rapha Condor/Recycling), second place went to Erick Rowsell (Team Corridori), who won the overall General classification.

Post Race Quotes:
Erick Rowsell - Team Corridor
"The first big climb of the day the break went I was going for the KOM points with Luke Rowe, it just started to split up there on as it was a tough climb not too far into the race and I think it made a few legs hurt then got into the break and we started to get a big gap and Luke and I decided we would go on the next big climb so over that we split up again, and we manage to get me Mark and Luke away, we worked really well together, we decided that 13 riders was too many to take too the line so that's why we decided to go for it."
Luke Rowe - Rahpha Condor
"Pleased with the stage win and my current form, we decided to go on the hill at Defynnog cause we didn't want to take 13 riders to the finish, we worked well together, no messing about, until the last kilo when we raced for the line. I'm not disappointed to win the GC as Erick is a good rider."
The organiser wishes to thanks all those who helped put the event together including the Wales NEG, Local Marshals and British Cycling's Commissaires. Also on to carry out the First Aid for the event was Medibike which is a subsidiary of the Wales National Escort Group.
Jason Jenkins the pilot of the First Aid Motorbike commented that it was a pleasure to help out on this prestigious event. The services of Medibike are also used by the Ambulance service during the week. Erick Rowsell also thanks everyone for running the event in his speech following the prize presentation.
