Russell 'Fonzy' Downing made it two British Cycling Premier Calendar race wins for a Downing as he followed up his brother Deans win in the Bikeline 2 Day with victory in the Girvan 3 Day stage race in Scotland by only four seconds from Rob Partridge. Winner of the final stage was Kristian House.

 

Stage 1: Girvan – Girvan, 65.5 miles

 

2008_Downing_Russell_01_60The first stage of the Girvan defied the weather predictions and was run off under largely sunny skies, Former Girvan winner Malcolm Elliott (Pinarello RT) provided the perfect lead out for Russ Downing to claim the victory, with his brother Dean – winner of the recent Bikeline Two Day - making it a Downing one-two in second place.

Day 1 -- Girvan 3 Day

 

 

Stage 2: Girvan – Victory Park Criterium, 16.5 miles

 

hhRace leader Russell Downing (Pinarello RT) took a 7 second advantage over his brother Dean (Rapha Condor Recycling.co.uk) into the second stage, covering 15 laps of Victory Park in the centre of Girvan. Find out what happened next from the report by Carl Lawrenson.

Stage 3: Newton Stewart - Girvan, 89.1miles

 

20080323_Stage3_Rapha_60Although overnight snowfall blanketed the surrounding hills, the roads on Sunday’s third and longest stage were unaffected - in fact sunshine and blue skies were the order of the day as the riders set out from Newton Stewart. After an eventful stage, Rob Partridge secured the stage victory with Simon Richardson second and Matt Cronshaw (Team Kinesis UK) third. Find out more:

Stage 4: , Girvan-Girvan 72 miles

 

aaRussell Downing's Pinarello team rode a canny stage which saw the double stage winner run out as overall winner by a mere 4 seconds from Rob Partridge. The 72 mile stage had to be re-routed over lower ground due to snow and ice lying on the descent from the summit at Nick o' the Balloch.
