2008 Bikeline Two Day
March 8/9, 2008 (Hope (Wales)
A British Cycling Premier Calendar Event
Day 1, Saturday, March 8
Report
On a cold, very windy and some times wet day in North Wales, the Bikeline 2008 kicked off this seasons British Cycling Premier Calendar with two stages around the town of Hope. At the end of the day and the two stages, overall leader going into stage 3 was Dean Downing of the Rapha Condor/Recycling racing team.
Stage 1 -- Time Trial
Left: Kevin Dawson finished in 64th place in a TT that was probably at least 24 miles too short, right, winner was Ian Wilkinson.
Winner of the opening time trial was SiS/Trek rider Ian Wilkinson who last year held the leaders jersey after stage 2. This year in similar conditions to last year, strong cold winds, the field were set off down the undulating lane one-by-one for the mile long race against the clock. There was a mixture of road bikes and time trial bikes and the fastest choice seemed to be the Trek road bike of Ian Wilkinson.
1. Ian Wilkinson, SiS/Trek 2.50.22
2. Dean Downing, Rapha Condor, 2.52.59
3. Simon Richardson, Plowman Craven, 2.53.11
4. Russell Downing, Pinarello, 2.54.06
5. Tom Barras, PCA, 2.54.83
Ian Wilkinson (Science in Sport/Trek). Second on the stage last year was the winner this year and he cheekily said that although he wishes Chris Newton well, and that it was a crap thing to happen with the Track Worlds coming up, he still would have beaten him today! Newton won the race last year but was taken out on Friday when involved in a traffic accident that saw him in hospital with broken bones and shattered dreams of a World Points title in Manchester.
“Today was superb” Ian went on to say. “We worked a lot during the preparation for this one and that worked well and conditions were real similar to last year. I had a regular race bike as its uphill. Maybe if you ride a bike like that (TT bike) all the time but I ride a mountain bike, cross bike, and to be fair, don’t have a time trial bike. I think it would be a mistake to put yourself on a specific bike like that just for two minutes and its uphill. I don’t see what advantage I’d gain – probably just damage myself for the afternoon stage!”
On how well he was prepared to protect the jersey, he replied “according to Cycling Weekly, we’re not one of the top three teams and we’ll keep it that way and having a small team maybe we’ll have to box a bit clever. I had the jersey last year and my legs let me down.”
Left: Course for the prologue was an undulating straight road into a howling cold wind. Right: Pinarello in a team warmup on the course.
Left: Tom Southam from Halfords during his effort for 31st place and right, Dave Clarke in his distinctive jersey looking for sponsorship.
Left: Matt Stephens gave it all as always for 42nd place and right, Russell Downing was all TT'd up for his effort that netted him fourth place.
Left: Former Two Day winner Simon Richardson started well with third in the Time Trial whilst Dean Downing was (right) was well pleased with his Time Trial.
Stage 2
Ian Wilkinson in the leaders jersey for the Bikeline Two Day leads the field away after a pause at the start for a speech by John Herety to celebrate Peter Bissell who passed away recently.
For stage 2, Ian Wilkinson of the Science in Sport/Trek racing team donned the orange leaders jersey which is so coloured because its the race sponsor, Bikeline, corporate colours. The race saw many breaks get away but none stayed away that long except for one of six riders that included Stephen Rudkin, Neil Coleman, Gordon Murdoch, Peter Williams, Tom Southam, Kit Kilham, and Ryan Bonser. They got brought back however and more breaks tried to get away but it wasn't until the final lap when a small group opened up a small gap on the bunch.
Eventual winner Evan Oliphant was part of this small group that had got away with 20k to go. In the break were three Rapha riders and after an attack by Dean Downing with a kilometre or two to go, Oliphant countered and when Evan got to Downing, Dale Appleby attacked Oliphant and went for the line only to run out of legs and as the line approached, Oliphant came back at him and sprinted all the way to the line to gain as many seconds as possible. Simon Gaywood won the bunch sprint.

Rider reactions:
Ian Wilkinson (Science in Sport/Trek). After stage 2, Ian said “It was grim out there. All the time there was stuff going, small groups going and coming back. I got caught at the front a fair bit but I was going with the tactic of being in it and then you don’t have to chase it but you can’t be in everything. It’s a tough day tomorrow and not having the jersey takes the pressure off and maybe I’ll come from behind. If we don’t do anything else, we had a stage win.”
Evan Oliphant (Plowman Craven/Evans Cycles)“I was trying to get as much time as possible as I knew I had to gain seconds on Dean. I got away with a guy and we were joined by more from Rapha and with three from that team, I sat in. Three of them were attacking me at the end. I let Deano get a gap and then closed up and attacked myself and got a few seconds. We had four guys in the top 10 before the start so there was no specific strategy. I had problems at the start as well and was at the back for half a lap. I snapped my back wheel when some one went into it at the start and I had to chase for half a lap and suffered the whole stage.”
Dean Downing (overall leader) Rapha Condor/Recycling.co.uk “I went about two K from the end so tried. I got in a few breaks and it was a very windy stage. It’s a funny course with a few corners in it so you get a lot of everything and the cross winds were a little bit dangerous as everyone was fanning out like you would do in an echelon.”
“The team rode brilliantly today. Ryan was in the first break which eventually came back. Kristian was active, everybody was having a go and that was what we wanted to do to try and get the yellow jersey which it looks like we have done in the end. When the final break went, Rob (Partridge) was up the road with another two and then Dale and I went with another two on the hill to start the final lap and went across. We dangled at 10 or 15 seconds in front of the main bunch and the last 20k was so hard. Matt Stephens and Matt Higgins were helping out which we were amazed at but then they are good workers those two.”
“Evan was sitting in but he was obliged to with his teammate Simon in third overall and one against three was never good odds. We tried to crack him at the end. I put in a big attack and Dale was on his wheel and Dale attacked him and it worked perfectly until Evan came back at him in the sprint and came over him. It is a great start to the season for the RCR (Rapha Condor Recycling) team.”
“We have a strong team to back the jersey up. It is half experienced riders and half young riders but even when we talk of experience in Dale and Rob they are still young so it is a strong team and we have meshed really well. We had a good training camp in Majorca and everything is coming together quite quickly.”
Dale Appleby (2nd on stage 2) Rapha Condor/Recycling.co.uk: “The form is not too bad. I had hoped to go better in the prologue (24th) but it was quite short and I never really got into it. We seemed to have made up for it in the afternoon stage. Rob got up the road and then me and Dean rode over to him. I was unlucky not to get the win. When Dean went with 2k to go, Evan went after him and I never quite got on him and when Evan got to Dean, I jumped him and ran out of legs a bit and he got round me. All in all, a good day.”

The riders bow their heads in memory of Peter Bissell who died recently.
The silence was followed by a round of applause.
Halfords rider Tom Southam who has just returned to Britain from Australia, has a dig into the howling wind.
One of the Rapha riders wins an early Prime ahead of Ben Luckwell.
A break of six riders forges clear of the field into a really strong wind at the back end of the course.
