2007 Reynolds / Michelin Junior Road Race Series

 

20070403_peter_kennaugh_150After 10 rounds of racing around the UK, the winner of the prestigious Junior Road Race series was former World Junior champion Peter Kennaugh. The Isle of Man rider who won two European Championships in the Team Pursuit including one where he rode in a category above his normal Junior one, won the British series convincingly from fellow Great Britain teammate Luke Rowe.

Junior Tour of Wales; August 25

 

20070827_Junior_Tour_Wales_Lead_60The last two days of the Junior Tour of Wales was full of some hard racing with some exciting finishes and some misfortune. It was a puncture which lead to Kennaugh loosing the Yellow Jersey and he launched repeated attacks on the final stage to win him the stage victory whilst for the overall win, Johnny McEvoy needed to stay with Erick Rowsell on the Final Climb to ensure the Yellow Jersey remained on his shoulders. This he did all the way up the “Tumble” despite Rowsell’s attempt to sprint clear. More >

 

Bath Road Club Junior Road Race; July 15

 

20070715_BathRCJRR_60With the forecast of heavy Showers throughout the penultimate round of British Cycling's Reynolds / Michelin Junior Race Series organised by the Bath Road Club, all were surprised at the dry overcast and humid conditions which lingered for the whole race. With the main contenders abroad representing Great Britain at the European Championships, the race was wide open and could have been won by any of the 41 starters. More >

 

 

The Tom Simpson National Junior Grand Prix; June 24

 

20070624_simpson_rr_Kennaugh_beats_McNally_in_Sprint_60Round 8 of the 10 round Junior Series was The Tom Simpson National Junior Road Race promoted by the Dinnington RC. The race started from the Harworth and Bircotes Sports Pavilion which contains the much celebrated shrine to one of British Cycling's most famous Riders - Tom Simpson who passed away on the Climb of Mont Ventoux during the 1967 Tour of France. CC Giro Junior Circuit Race; June 16

 

Peter Kennaugh (Pinarello RT) won this West Midlands road race from Mark McNally (Liverpool Mercury)and Welsh rider Rhys Lloyd also from Liverpool Mercury. We do not have a report for this event.

 

Brentwood Borough Council Town Centre Races; June 10

 

brentwood_photo_album_60The first event on the days programme at Brentwood (Essex) was the Junior National Series race won by Adam Blythe from Mark McNally and series leader Luke Rowe with World Junior Champion Peter Kennaugh in fourth place. These four dominated the race as they formed a break just after halfway and were never caught again by a hard chasing group. More >

 

 

In-Gear Junior Tour of Sussex; May 25

 

20070527_Sussex_Tour_Report_60The In-Gear Junior Tour of Sussex was won by Andy Fenn. The race, part of the  Junior National Series, saw the best Juniors from around the country do battle in the lanes of Sussex with National Junior coach (Endurance men) Darren Tudor.

 

The Olympic Development Endurance coach was there watching how his boys performed but was also looking at other riders who have aspirations of making  the Great Britain Cycling Team’s Olympic Development Programme squad.  More > 

 

Junior Tour of Worcestershire; May 12

 

20070513_Worcestor_Stage3_60Peter Kennaugh (Pinarello RT) extended his lead in the National Junior Road Race Series by securing first place on the final stage of the Junior Tour of Worcestershire to take first place overall on the General Classification making it two stage race wins in two weeks after winning his local Isle of Man Tour the week before. Isle of Man Youth and Junior Tour; May 4

 

20070506_Youth_Tour_Lead_60Sheffield's Adam Blythe won the final stage, the Port Erin kermesse, of the Isle of Man Youth Tour sponsored by Sleepwell Hotels. Team Isle of Man's Peter Kennaugh was second in a bunch sprint and was the overall winner of the junior category from Rhys Lloyd (Liverpool Mercury/Dolan) and Luke Rowe (Wales). More >

 

 

Sid Standard Memorial Road Races; April 22

 

20070422_Sid_Standard_Junior_Blythe_60The second round of  Michelin/Reynolds Junior Road Race series over 75 miles was won by Philip Graves (above left) (Private BC Member) who finished ahead of Jonathon McEvoy (Kinesis) and Adam Blythe(SiS/trek).

 

The race, held on a fairly flat 5.3 mile course in Kingston on Soar just south of Nottingham, was over 14 laps and a break of six dominated the race until just three laps from the end when triathlete Graves made his move and soloed all the way to the finish. More >

 

Martyn Ashfield Cycles Road Race; March 23

 

200703234_Martyn_Ashfield_Classic_RR_60The picturesque snow capped Brecon Beacons was the setting for the opening race in the 2007 season of the Junior Road Race Series. The demanding course of 67 miles coincidently saw 67 riders take to the start outside the Storey Arms at the foot of the “Y Gyrn” & “Pen Milan” Mountains.

 

The sun was out from the start and shone on the riders all the way to the finish but the windy conditions kept the temperature down and the conditions difficult. More >
