9-15th September, 2007

PHOTO ALBUMS -- The Road Stages 1 to 3

British Cycling was the only press agency with a dedicated motorbike covering the action on the road as the Tour of Britain raced from London to Glasgow. We have the second part of the photo albums which document the race for the first three stages.

STAGE REPORTS

Prologue Crystal Palace | 9th, Sept.

20070909_ToB_ST1_Mark_Cavendish_60T-Mobile’s British sprint sensation Mark Cavendish won the opening Prologue time trial of the 2007 Tour of Britain at Crystal Palace this afternoon with a stunning lap of the 2.5km course which saw him finish over a second ahead of the next closest rider. The win takes to nine Cavendish’s total of stage victories in this his debut season as a professional with the T-Mobile Team, one more than the mark set by sprint legend Robbie McEwen in his first season as a Pro. The Manxman will go into tomorrow’s stage from Reading to Southampton as the first Britain to wear the yellow jersey at the Tour of Britain since the race was revived in 2004.

Stage 1 Reading – Southampton | 10th, Sept.

20070910_ToB_Stage2_60T-Mobile's Mark Cavendish made it two wins out of two as the Tour of Britain went out onto the open road for stage two, Reading to Southampton. After a fast stage through some of Southern England's most beautiful countryside, the race came together for a big sprint into Southampton, where the ace T-Mobile sprinter had an excellent lead-out and made no mistake, putting behind him once and for all his several near misses in last year's event.

Stage 1-Tour of Britain

Stage 2 Yeovilton – Taunton | 11th, Sept

20070911_ToB_Stage2_047_6Stage 2 of the 2007 Tour of Britain took the riders into the tough hills of Exmoor in North Devon in a 105 mile loop from Yeovilton to Taunton. It was, in the eyes of many experienced observers, the toughest stage the race has presented to the riders since its reincarnation several years ago and it duly lived up to expectations, blowing the race apart and delivering a new race leader.

Stage 2-Tour of Britain

Stage 3 Worcester – Wolverhampton | 12th, Sept

20070912_ToB_Stage3_60Report: Matt Goss of the CSC Team was the driving force behind a small break which dominated the third stage of the Tour of Britain as it tackled a tough route through the West Midlands. Goss went on to break up the leading group over the final miles and underlined his classy ride by taking the sprint in a crowded Wolverhampton. T-Mobile's Roger Hammond was the leaing Brit in third. Ben Swift had a good day, playing his part in the break and taking the mountains jersey along the way.

Stage 3-Tour of Britain

Stage 4 Rotherham – Bradford | 13th, Sept

20070913_ToB_Stage4_60Report: The big story of stage 4 of the 2007 Tour of Britain wasn't about the racing. After a rapid first hour, the race entered North Yorkshire and was almost immediately halted by the North Yorkshire Police. Upon resumption, the 18 miles of the race within North Yorkshire was neutralised. Racing resumed once the event crossed into West Yorkshire and a break of 26 riders dominated the rest of the stage into Bradford.

Stage 4-Tour of Britain

Stage 5 Liverpool – Kendal | 14th, Sept

20070914_ToB_Stage5_60Report: On a cold and windy day Russian rider Alexander Serov (Tinkoff Credit Systems) took the fifth stage of the Tour of Britain following a virtually stage-long break with Mark Cavendish of T-Mobile. A break of some ten riders had gone clear early in the stage, but when their companions hesitated, Cavendish and Serov went clear and their initiative really paid off.

Stage 5-Tour of Britain

Stage 6 Dumfries – Glasgow | 15th, Sept

20070915_ToB_Stage6_60Report, Results and final GC: GB's Paul Manning, one of the riders of the race, won the final stage of the 2007 Tour of Britain into Glasgow. Manning was part of a five man break which stayed away for much of the stage and indirectly affected the overall result of the race, preventing overnight leader Adrian Palomares (Fuerteventura-Canarias) from responding to a well-timed bonus sprint win by Romain Feillu, who grabbed the three seconds needed to snatch the race lead on the road.
