Womens Team Series Race Report -- Jon Miles
Team Luciano-Everest Home Improvements, put on a superb team display during the 84 kilometre Duncan Murray Wines sponsored Women's Team Race Series event held on the Naseby circuit - a circuit that was designed for good racing - when all their 6 riders finished in the top 10 places. Victory went to Melissa Mather, following on from her terrific performance in the recent Tour de Bretagne, after 2 hours 10 minutes in very hot weather but with a strong breeze, beating Avril Swan, Impsport Composite A with Carrie Beddingfield in 3rd place.
 
After a fast start to the race the first time up Oxendale Hill saw riders leaving from the rear of the bunch; with 14 kilometres covered an attack went 2 riders, just another attack by Team Luciano who were constantly forcing the pace. With other riders getting across there was a group of 7 riders in the lead including Hannah Bussey, Diane Moss, Helen Gutteridge - all of Team Luciano and Lisa Hollingshead - Impsport Composite A (happily back to full racing fitness after her serious accident last season although still not able to fully close her right hand), Avril Swann also Impsport Composite A with Lizzie Goodband - Fat Birds CC.
 
This group rapidly gained ground until with 2 laps to go they held a lead of 1 minute 18 seconds. The chase group was being organised into a through and off; at the bottom of Oxendale hill for the 3rd time Alexandra Deck - Impsport A, after riding very well unshipped her chain and lost contact, a great pity as she was more than holding her own in the chase group. The lead break was now at 1 minute 55 seconds.
 
Not obliged to aid the chase Jeanette Caldicott, Melissa Mather and Carrie Bedingfield of Team Luciano just sat at the back of the chasing group saving their energy; Rohan Battison - Agiskoviner, was dropped on the hill but after a chase of 1 mile got back on. Over the top of the hill and Bedingfield and Mather attacked from the chasers eventually making contact with the leaders with just 10 kilometres to go to the finish. Another example of the tactics of the leading team for the past 4 years.
 
Last time up Oxendale Hill and it was Jeanette Caldicott - Team Luciano,who attacked taking with her Charlotte Colclough - Fat Birds CC; the lead was now up to 2 minutes 42 seconds. Into the final 200 metres and it was Melissa who hit the front to take a well earned win for Team Luciano with the team gaining maximum points; particularly pleasing was the return to form of Lisa Hollingshead after almost a year out of the sport.
 
An excellent tactical race on a very good racing course and Welland Valley CC are to be congratulated on the organisation of a very good Team Series race.
