Women's Team Series Road Race
Report
Held on a 5.3 mile course around Kingston on Soar, the riders in this first Team Series event of the year covered 8 laps. After a fairly inactive race where the main action to note was a serious crash where its said as many as five riders fell and one was taken to hospital with head injuries, a group of around 50 riders contested the finish and the winner was Alice Monger-Godfrey (Impsport Composite B) ahead of Charlotte Colcough (Fat Birds Cycling Club) and Louise Mahe (Team Quality Products).
Helen Clayton forces the pace at the front.
Katie Colough was the only rider I saw go clear which she did early on.
The race
With a full field plus reserves - and new teams wanting to make their mark early, the pace was high for the first 8.5 kilometre lap and it was inevitable that first time up the main hill there would be a loosening at the rear of the bunch and it was to be the hill that provided the pain each lap. Helping to force the pace early on were Laura Bissell and Katie Colclough, with Colcough having a gap on the group prior to the crash.
With one of the girls needing an ambulance (Clare Thomas - Edinburgh RC)when she hit the tarmac on the 3rd lap; the race was brought to a halt while the ambulance arrived from nearby Nottingham and as a consequence the race had 2 laps lopped off. Clare went to hospital for observation but was expected to be released later in the evening.
With five laps on the board, and the ambulance having gone, the race got back under way and again, the action was mainly at the back, as the odd rider here and there got dropped but the group largely remained together all the way to the finish. On the slightly uphill drag, the group came into sight well strung out as the pace of the sprint saw gaps open in the group from where Monger-Godfrey surged clear for a well earned win.

Riders on the first lap.
Bell lap and the gas is yet to be turned on the in the peloton with the finish only 5 miles away.
Action at the front but little damage being done behind them as the riders sit tucked in the wheels.
