Having had a relatively easy day in the saddle, with CSC and T-Mobile doing the majority of the chasing which had to be done, QuickStep formed up with a couple of laps to go and gave Boonen a wonderfully orchestrated lead-out through the last mile or so. A long delay resulted and the riders responded by riding the whole stage at a slow tempo. A bunch sprint did take place and was won by Francesco Chicchi of Quickstep. More details soon! Friday, September 1 | Chocolade Jacques rider Frederik Willems won the 4th stage from T-Mobile's Mark Cavendish. Paul Manning was third. The first eight over the line were part of a long break which finished 5 minutes clear of the main bunch in Birmingham. | | Stage 3 - Yorkshire, Thursday, August 31st | Stage 3 into Sheffield is won by former Milan-San Remo winner Filippo Pozzato who was part of a break of about 25 who got clear of the main field in the later stages and stayed away - the main field straggled in some 20 minutes down. The retirement of race leader, Matt Goss, following a crash means that Stage 1 winner Pederson, who was 4th on the stage, is now back in yellow. Heavy driving rain made the stage very difficult, with several crashes reported. In fact, the crowds were a feature of the day, with big throngs on all the many climbs through the Lancashire hills and a big crowd at the stage finish: Report, Images & Results >>>> General Classification >>>> Interviews >>>> | | Stage 1 - Scotland, Glasgow to Castle Douglas Tuesday, 29th August | Break Stays Away on Stage 1: Dane Martin Pederson of the CSC team won the opening stage of the 2006 Tour of Britain. Part of a three man break which managed to stay away to the finish, Pederson won a tight sprint to claim the win and a useful two and a half minute cushion over the rest of the field going into stage two: Report, Images & Results >>>> | |
