Malcolm Elliott was the winner of the opening round of the British Cycling Elite Circuit Race series at the Hillingdon Cycle Circuit on Saturday. Elliot had his revenge over Marius Wiesiak of Poland who beat Elliott, just, to the line in the Archer Grand Prix in April. Perhaps it was the fresh legs after a holiday with the family, or the bright warm sunshine, that helped Elliott regain the form he had at the start of the season when he was one of the strongest riders in the peloton.
Elliott surprised his break away companions by making his move a long way out, with a lap to go of the race, and with Tony Gibb back in the chase group monitoring the chase, the Sheffield rider managed to hold off the rest to win by a handful of seconds. Marius Wiesiak was second whilst Warrick Spence was third.
The event was quite a long one for a circuit race at 80 kilometres and the early stages of the race saw many riders trying their luck to form a break only for it to be brought back. With the numbers to control the race, the PCA riders were making their presence felt.
That didn't stop riders trying their hand though and Great Britain Olympic Development Programme rider Adam Blythe showed that after a year of illness he is getting back his form of old when he got in a break with fellow Sheffield rider Malcolm Elliot and a few others. The bunch soon brought it back only for more to try including an impressive lone effort from Brett Perez before he was joined by riders such as Nottingham's Matthew Charity, Warwick Spence, and David Clarke.
It was a break that didn't succeed but it did cause massive splits in the field as the gas was continued to be poured on by a rider who knows his way round Hillingdon very well indeed, Tony Gibb. He'd warmed up the day before with a win at the other London cycle circuit, Eastway and surprisingly for a rapid sprinter, was going for the lone solo effort. It took a while before his rivals sorted themselves out and mounted a challenge but when they did, it was a very effective one.
Poland's Wiesiak attacked to try and get across to him and had Spence, Stewart, Muir and Elliott with him as well although Elliot wasn't about to chase his teammate down. It didn't matter though as there was enough fire power in the chase group for them to cross to Gibb whilst behind, it was game over the bunch who slipped further and further behind. Having the numbers, PCA started the old one-two and it was Elliott who profited with victory.
