Stage 4, Girvan - Girvan, 70 miles
Though on paper the shortest road stage of the 2006 Girvan, there could be no illusions that the final 70 miles would be an easy ride for the remaining 74 competitors. Whilst both Dale Appleby (Border Reivers Composite/Recycling.co.uk) and Ian Wilkinson (Science in Sport.com) had built themselves reasonable leads in the King of the Mountains and Hot Spot Sprint competitions - thanks to consistent scoring in the previous days - with a feast of points on offer from the five classified climbs and two sprints still to be contested they could not afford to be complacent.
Neither could overall leader Krisitan House (Recycling.co.uk) who held only a seven second advantage on general classification over Agisko/Dart's Clayton Barrows. With time bonuses on the finish line, and both riders having made the podium on every stage so far, there was the enticing prospect of a very close finish to the race. No sooner was the neutralised section over than the riders began the first of two ascents of Byne Hill, a third place for Appleby saw him add to his lead in the mountains competition, though maximum points went to GB Mountain Bike's Ian Bibby.
As the race turned off the A714 at just under six miles, a short but steep climb on the road to Barr saw a significant split develop in the main field. 20 riders went clear, including the yellow, green and polka dot jerseys and nearly all their major challengers. With both the Recycling and Agisko squads pushing the pace, and powerhouse Matt Stephens (Sigma Sport) never far from the front of the move, their advantage had increased to almost one minute by the top of 'The Screws' climb. Though now slimmed down to 16, this lead group seemed like the break of the day - would the peloton ever see them again?
Through the flatter roads of Dailly and Kirkmichael it seemed that the rest of the race were not going to give up so easily and the leading riders saw their advantage narrowed to less than 30 seconds as they passed through the hot spot sprint in Crosshill. Another first place for Wilkinson put the green jersey beyond doubt as his nearest challenger Ben Hallam (Glendene CC) failed to score.
At 39 miles the leaders began the ascent of Hadyard Hill, site of one of main race sponsor Scottish Power Renewables wind farms, with the main field now just a few seconds behind. The junction was made as they riders toiled up the slopes of this picturesque and challenging climb, but with the summit in sight another attack by the big guns saw a new lead group start to pull away. However this time the polka dot jersey of Dale Appleby had missed the move. Building their advantage on the descent back to Barr there was drama as Agisko/Dart's Clayton Barrows and his team mate Kevin Dawson punctured at the same time. Fortunately an efficient wheel change from their service car saw them quickly back with the leaders as they tackled 'The Screws' for the second time.
With GB Mountain Bike's Nick Craig taking the KOM points he moved up to second place in the Carrick Gazette sponsored classification, but although Appleby was now with the second group on the road his hold on the polka dot jersey seemed assured. Speeding back through Girvan before tackling the final miles of the race it was a frenzy of activity as the leaders continued to increase their advantage. A brief attack by Matt Talbot (Glendene CC) saw him take the final Hot Spot sprint but the relentless pressure of the Recycling and Agisko teams, aided by Matt Stephens and Ian Wilkinson, meant that the 14 strong group looked destined to contest a decisive sprint when they reached the finish line at Victory Park.
As the final sprint unfolded, Barrows knew that he would have to distance Kristian House if he was to taste victory in his first Girvan. Launching his attack up the left hand side of the road, Barrows could not dislodge House from his wheel and they took the one-two across the line. However the fifteen second time bonus for stage winner Barrows was not sufficient to overhaul House who collected 10 seconds for second and thus secured overall victory by a margin of 2 seconds.

Speaking on the podium after collecting the final yellow jersey of the race, House - who was also riding at Girvan for the first time - declared himself delighted with both his own and his teams performance. It was confirmation that he was back on top form after losing out to his team mate Ben Greenwood three weeks earlier at the Tour of the Reservoir.
For American Clayton Barrows the Girvan also proved to be a rewarding experience and he showed himself to be a significant challenger for the rest of the Premier Calendar series when battle is renewed on the cobbled climbs of the Lincoln Grand Prix on May 7th.
With another strong team performance, Recycling.co.uk collected the team award whilst among their younger riders Dale Appleby performed superbly to take the Carrick Gazette King of the Mountains prize and Robert Partridge collected the Pete Longbottom award for best Under 23 rider thanks to his victory on stage 1 and third place on general classification. The green jersey of Endura/TAL Hot Spot Sprint winner stayed with Ian Wilkinson of Science In Sport.com. And so the 37th edition of The Girvan 3 Day drew to a close and yet again proved that it is a true classic on the UK racing calendar. Kristian House was quick to complement Ian Sinclair and the race organisation for promoting an excellent event and looked forward to returning in 2007.

OTHER STAGES
Stage 1, Girvan - Girvan, 76 milesThe 37th edition of the Girvan 3 Day, third counting event in the season long Premier Calendar Competition and the only one contested north of the border, got underway with almost 100 riders spread across 27 teams. Whilst few would doubt that Recycling.co.uk would be the team to beat, it would come as something as a surprise as to which member of the squad would wear the first yellow jersey of race leader.
Following the ceremonial start in the centre of Girvan, the riders were faced almost immediately with the first Carrick Gazette King of the Mountains climb of the day at Byne Hill. It was American Clayton Burrows riding for Agisko/Dart/Cycling.tv who crossed the line first, whilst further back the service vehicles were kept busy as several riders succumbed to early punctures.
As the race reached Barrhill with 11 miles covered the first of two hot spot sprints were contested, with Ian Wilkinson (Science in Sport.com) taking the honours which would later earn him the green jersey of leader in the classification. The pace was brisk during the early part of the stage but it wasn't until the ascent of the long climb to Tairlaw summit that the first significant moves were made. Recycling's Ben Greenwood, winner of the recent Tour of the Reservoir, forced a small gap in the company of GB Mountain Bike's Nick Craig and Matt Bottrill of the De Rosa Racing team.
They were swiftly joined by 2005 Girvan winner Robin Sharman (Recycling.co.uk) and Clayton Burrows. As more riders joined the lead group on the rapid descent they soon numbered 45 and held almost half a minute's advantage as they reached Straiton with 41 miles gone. The next climb at Dersalloch Hill, proposed location for new race sponsor Scottish Power Renewables latest on-shore wind farm, saw Sharman and Greenwood working hard at the head of affairs. Under their relentless pressure the lead group had been reduced to just 18 by the time the race turned onto the A713. Dale Appleby (Recycling.co.uk) added the KOM win to his second place at Byne Hill and thus secured the polka dot jersey.
With the climbing over, the leaders continued to be very active as the race sped through Waterside and Patna, with Ian Wilkinson again taking maximum points at the Patna Hot Spot. With Greenwood and former National Road Race Champion Matt Stephens (Sigma Sport) working well, the leading group included all of Recycling.co.uk's A team with the exception of Evan Oliphant. By now the rear of the peloton were more than 3 minutes behind but a chase group of 25 were not so easy to shake off and the leaders advantage yo-yoed between 30 and 50 seconds as the race passed through Straiton and Dailly on the fast run in back to Girvan.
The 18 leaders were still all together as they made the left turn at the landmark White Cottage just 2 miles from the finish, and shortly after this an opportunist attack by one of the younger Recycling riders, Robert Patridge (pictured), gained him a slender advantage at the front. Despite a frantic sprint for the line he maintained his lead and took the stage victory and with it the first yellow jersey of the race. His team mate Kristian House placed second, followed by Burrows and Sharman.

Stage 2, Victory Park Criterium, 16.5 milesWith just a few hours to recover, the field lined up again for the always popular circuit race around Victory Park in the centre of Girvan. Light but persistent rain had begun to fall shortly before the start and the damp conditions led to a cautious race with riders more concerned about staying upright than making moves off the front.
The enthusiastic crowd which lined the finish cheered them through each time, but it was at the back that damage was being done as riders lost contact with the main bunch. Ben Hallam (Glendene CC) took both Hot Spot Sprints on offer but Ian Wilkinson also placed consistently and maintained his lead in the Endura/TAL sponsored competition and with it the Green Jersey.
At the bell the Recycling squad moved up to the front and Kristian House (pictured) secured the victory over his team mate Evan Oliphant who was anxious to make amends for missing the move earlier in the day. With Clayton Barrows again finishing third he ended a successful day at his first Girvan. The sprint victory, and the time bonus it provided, ensured that House took over the yellow jersey of race leader, his advantage standing at 10 seconds over former wearer Robert Partridge. Sunday sees stage 3- the longest and most testing at just under 100 miles - head out from Girvan for an eventual finish at Minigaff just outside Newton Stewart.

Stage 3, Girvan - Minigaff, 97 miles
With the prospect of 97 miles of racing taking in four classified climbs including the ascent of Tairlaw 'the hard way' - the third (and longest) stage of The Girvan presented a daunting challenge for the 93 survivors.
Even as the race left the neutralised section the peloton were very active with Duncan Urquart and Kevin Dawson (both Agisko/Dart) giving an early sign of things to come. By Dailly, with just 4.5 miles gone, they had pulled out a lead of almost 20 seconds in the company of Matt Higgins (Composite A). The first Endura/TAL Hot Spot sprint of the day was contested at Straiton with the green jersey wearer Ian Wilkinson (Science In Sport.com) taking maximum points.
As the riders began the ascent to the King of the Mountains prime at Tairlaw Summit, the lead group had grown to 13 but their advantage was reduced to 27 seconds under relentless pressure from the peloton. First over the line was Duncan Urquhart (Agisko/Dart) with Dale Appleby (Recycling.co.uk) taking second and extending his lead in the mountains classification. Onto the descent and 2005 Girvan winner Robin Sharman suffered a rear wheel puncture but quickly regained the pack. Meanwhile Urquhart went clear at the front, eventually building a maximum lead of 39 seconds before being caught by the peloton with 40 miles covered.
No sooner was Urquhart caught than Kevin Dawson and Dale Appleby launched an attack. With Dawson (stage 4 winner at the 2005 Girvan) doing the majority of the driving, Appleby moved through to collect more KOM points at Pibble Hill. As the race approached Lauriston at the 70 mile mark their lead stood at almost 3 minutes, with Appleby now the yellow jersey on the road. But there were signs that the peloton were starting to stir with the chase being led by Kristian House (Recycling.co.uk), clearly determined not to lose his grip on the leaders jersey. Soon nine riders were clear of the main field and pursuing the leaders, rapidly eating away their advantage. Also included in the chase group were Sharman, Clayton Barrows (Agisko/Dart B), Matt Stephens (Sigma Sport) and green jersey Ian Wilkinson.
Within six miles the leaders were joined by the chasers and the main field immediately began to fall further behind. With ten miles to go to the finish at Minigaff, their lead stood at 2 minutes 30 seconds. Urquhart tried to get across in the company of Martin Smith (Team Milton Keynes) but they could make no impression on the lead and soon rejoined the main field, clearly resigned to their fate.
Neil Coleman claims stage 3
The long straight finish afforded a great view for the large gathering of spectators as the sprint unfolded. With House powering down the right hand side of the road, Agisko/Dart launched Neil Coleman and Clayton Burrows on the left with Coleman taking the victory by a small margin from his teammate, who was destined for his third appearance on the winners podium. House secured third and with it kept his leaders jersey for another day.
