Twickenham CC Winter Circuit Series
January 21, 2006; Race 10 of the 2005/06 Series; Hillingdon Cycle Circuit
The latest round of the Twickenham CC Winter Series organised by Doug Collins saw racing held on a fine day in London which attracted 70 riders to the Hillingdon Cycle Circuit. A rider who seemingly wins at will when present, Tony Gibb, was absent after leaving for a trip to South Africa much to the other riders relief. That?s because Tony has this habit of helping to shape the pattern of the racing which organiser Doug Collins says was needed on Saturday.
The racing began with an early effort by Dave Baker (PCA/Ciclos Uno), Mick Hill (Team Quest), Matt Seaton (VC Londres) and Des Gayler (Kenton RC) but the break came to nothing as the chase behind saw them brought to heel. Twickenham CC riders Bill Butterworth and Steve Legg then tried to get away themselves suffering the same fate as the early break and they were pulled back as well.
Next to try was Henry Furniss (Ride Beyond), fresh from a training trip to Lanzarote where he is reported to have ridden 1200 kilometres. Furniss gave it plenty of effort when he attacked mid-race and soon opened a 15 second gap on his own. One man against the bunch though was too much and he too was pulled back.
The most significant move came in the last 5 kilometres made by the fast improving Andy Betts (Twickenham CC) who built a 8 second lead and almost held off the charging group readying themselves for the sprint finish. The race in the end was decided by a frantic bunch finish with overall points being fought for by the leading contenders.
On the line, Vince Halpern (AW Cycles) held off Furniss and former series winner Jason Streather (VC St Raphael) who defended his position at the rankings. One down side to the day's racing was some extremely bad riding and the organiser has said this will need to be addressed but there was more good news with the lost wheels from last week being found. -- Doug Collins
