Soggy Bottoms Are Back for 2008-9

Event Dates: Nov 16, Jan 18, March 15

We've just received this update from organiser Martyn Salt, on this winter's Soggy Bottom series.

The popular Soggy Bottom Cross-Country mountain bike series returns to Newnham Park for three winter doses of dirt on November 16, January 18 and March 15. The series offers a great day of XC racing at a venue that offers good facilities and always challenging and interesting courses.

The races are hosted at the Newnham Park Shooting ground which provides hard standing car parking, flushing loos, hot water on tap, indoor cafe/registration and in addition the race package includes electronic lap timing with some dodgy commentary giving instant position/time updates. Each course will be different and around 3.5 miles with lap amounts varying across the categories.

This year the series hosts the return of the popular Soggy Bottom Border Battle team event where Devon/Cornwall/Somerset/Dorset riders battle it out for county pride and a big slice of cake. In addition the Silverfish Soggy Saddle and Soul of Soggy Bottom will offer spot prizes together with the normal category prizes supplied by Certini, The Bike Cellar, Plymouth Cycle Scene and Shred.

If that's not enough then the races are category E for British Cycling ranking points, but most riders are there just for the Winter exercise and to enjoy the Newnham trails.

This will be the 6th season of soggy races with entries growing from 100 per round in 2003 with 200+ per round last Winter. Although the organisers may have to consider renaming them as in that time, of the 19 days racing in 5 winters only 2 days have been wet....Winter is the New Summer!
