Soggy Bottom Cross-Country Winter Series
Newnham Park
Sunday 16 Nov 2008
Report & Images: Joolze Dymond
A 660 mile round trip, drizzle and a soggy bottom...Certainly this doesn't paint an ideal way to spend a weekend but on the contrary, it was wicked! Okay we probably travelled the furthest, but it was well worth it, sentiments that were shared by all of the 300 plus mountain bike competitors both local and visitors from the 'Borders' who turned up at Newnham Park, Plymouth ready to battle it out not only for individual winter Cross Country glory but also for the honour of scoring points for the ultimate Battle of the Borders; a race within a race where competitors choose which county they wish to represent, the winning county gets to eat cake at the end of the series. Traditionally, Devon has dominated this part of the Soggies proving that Devon cream teas are better for you than Cornish pasties, probably...oh and there were a few British Cycling ranking points up for grabs too! Welcome to The Soggy Bottom!
Above: Before the race - smiley faces and not a soggy bottom in sight...
The Soggies have been around for a number of years, a low key winter Cross Country series organised by the team behind such classics as Twentyfour/12 and of course for 2009 the British Mountain Bike Series...in their home town of Plymouth utilising for many what could be regarded as the spiritual home for Cross Country racing in the UK - Newnham Park.
I have it on great authority that they may be Soggy in name but not usually in conditions, obviously with the curse of the 2008 weather that has been the talk of most events, this one too was no exception and succumbed to inclement weather and yet it didn't put off a record number of entries as competitors clamoured to be able to ride the hallowed singletrack of Newnham.
Above: The young riders beat the bottleneck
First off were the youngsters, both youth and juveniles, who pelted down the forest trail start closely followed by the Grand Vets and the Fun class. The compact 6km course packed in everything you could want, or maybe not! A steep climb rising up into the woods was the first obstacle they encountered and then they hit mud, lots of mud and continued to slip and slide their way along, dipping and diving through masses of fun singletrack, tackling slippery bomb holes before some fast descending followed by a soul sapping grassy incline, popping them into another fast and furious descent, then it was a quick blast over the river before making their way back to the arena, to do it all again! For the juveniles and fun women there were two laps to fight over while the rest of the categories had three super mud filled laps to complete. Needless to say with all the mud, seemingly constant drizzle and a comprehensive river crossing soaking, there were one or two 'soggy bottoms' on course but no shortage of wide beaming grins, especially when the mornings racing was finished and was replaced with steaming hot mugs of tea and lashings of hot food thanks to the lovely ladies running the Shooting Ground Cafe on site.
The first win of the day went to Edward Welsh in the juveniles, whose tactic of hanging onto the youth riders and battling against them paid dividends as he took a comfortable win - his first ever. Behind him, the real battle was being played out with Bow Jango and Will Atkins, neither giving an inch, the lead constantly changed. However Bow Jango, despite being pretty tired surged past in the closing stages to take second. Lone juvenile girl Kerry Whittlesea didn't let the lack of competition to put her off and got stuck into her own race with the lads.
Peter Robinson led a Bikinmotion 1, 2 as he surged to victory over three laps in the youth race, with team mate Richard Jansen bringing up the rear to claim second despite an unplanned early dip in the river. Despite a nasty slide on the slippy concrete, Jansen recovered and through gritted teeth kept on the chase, keeping Harry Smith in third. Grand Vet and seasoned campaigner Tim Flooks put all his down hill experience to good practise and despite claiming to be out of control out there, manoeuvred himself into a comfortable win, outwitting closest rival Rob Owen, who in turn kept at bay Steve Whitehouse.
Above: Riders were grateful for the chance to wash off a few lbs worth of mud!
Probably the closest race of the day had to be in the fun race. In his first Soggy, Neil Vingoe started off at a furious pace taking an early lead; he was soon joined by Mark Sansby, with Matt Jepson keeping a close eye on the riders upfront. By lap two, all three riders just had seconds separating them. Vingoe and Sansby seemingly had the edge on descending whilst Jepson concentrated on reeling them in on the climbs. A real cat and mouse game was unravelling. Vingoe looked to have the edge but with his sights firmly on the win and just a few hundred yards remaining, Jepson came pounding past to take the win, leaving a shell shocked Vingoe to take second and Sansby picking up third as his reward.
With enough time to grab a cuppa and applaud those that earned their stripes and collect some all important 'Border' points, it was soon time for the second race of the day to depart.
This time round the categories in contention were the Expert/Elite, Masters, Sport and Vets, with a massive turn out the trail was gonna be busy! As the horn sounded to start the race, some rider's races finished literally before they had started.
Phil Morris - favourite to win the Masters race - was obviously a lot stronger than he thought as with just a few pedal strokes he broke his chain and spent nearly 20 minutes fixing it to rejoin the race one lap down leaving Jay Horton, Peter Dawe and Ollie Taylor smirking all the way round their four laps battling it out between them who would now take the honours in this race. With the riders pinging their way through the trees it was anyone's guess who would take this, in the end Horton opened the winning gap to take it while Dawe inched away from Taylor to take second. Another Master rider to fight from behind was Vince Cox, who suffered a puncture on the start line and had to watch the race leave as he got to grips with the repair. He fought hard to pick up a fine top 10 placing out of a 64 man strong field. And Phil Morris? Despite starting nearly one lap down he finally came home in 35th...
Emily Curtain had a comfy race in the Master Women's race, settling into her rhythm despite not really wanting to get out there. After a couple of climbs and a real soaking in the river she still came through smiling to take the win. Claire McGreevy took second with Emma Sargent, riding her first Cross Country race, took a creditable third.
Above: The ladies get to grips with the course
With sons Bow Jango and Capability Jack having already completed their races earlier in the day, it was now mum and dad's turn to have their go in the vet's. Sam Cann eased through her three laps, with just one thought on her mind - not letting her husband Jim lap her. She succeeded, taking the win in her class ahead of Helen Willis. Jim Cann took a top 20 place in the Vets men but it was Tim Fey who took the win opening up a considerable gap over second paced rider Adrian Bellews, who looked to be battling all the way round with Gary Andrews for that honour, just 13 seconds separated them in the end.
Another hugely contested race was the sports category, with over 60 riders keen to pick up the first spot. However this was another cat and mouse game with the lead changing constantly and body/tree interface became the order of the day. Over the four laps it was Edward Kerly who finally edged forward to take the win leaving Luke Eggar to take second ahead of Kai Hansen, but also providing a Somerset whitewash on the podium.
Competitor of the day has to go to Sports rider Lee Mallen, who after lap two was sitting pretty in fifth, until a broken mech forced him to run the remaining third lap placing him ninth. Now most riders might have called it a day, not Mallen who tackled the final 6km lap on foot to finish in a creditable eighteenth!
Cassie Rowe, took part in her first Soggy last year, but couldn't face the weather to return, however for this new series she came back with renewed enthusiasm and embracing the mud and the drizzle she completed her second ever Cross Country race and took the win in the ladies sport race, leaving Amy O'Loughlin and Sophie Kumar to take the remaining podium spots.
Finally it was the battle of the big boys, as the Elite/Expert riders got tangled up in the fight for first. Having crossed to the 'dark side' some four years ago, pro road rider Jon Locke fancied a bit of mud plugging for a change. So borrowing a mate's bike he turned up and relished in the conditions, taking the stiff climbs in his stride he controlled the race from the front and took the win. Behind locked in the battle for the minor placings were Iain Payne and Simon Young. Young didn't have the best of starts and slowly closed down on Payne but despite a late surge on the last lap still had to settle for third behind Payne with just two seconds separating them.
Elite racer Maddie Horton and adventure racer Alli Northcott were squaring up for a good ding-dong battle in the ladies' Elite/Expert race. However Horton having conducted a ladies skills session the day before and then watched as her prodigies competed in their first Cross Country races at the Soggy, was dismissive of her chances, stating tiredness and of course a strong Northcott as a reason she may not win. Horton started strongly and by lap two had opened up a lead, the win looked like it could be hers after all. However disaster happened as a puncture followed by a desperate attempt to get the gas canister to work and all her hard work unravelled and she had to watch as Northcott came past. Even with a strong finish Horton could not catch Nothcott who eventually took the win.
As a season opener you couldn't have asked for more, well maybe a little less drizzle but the buzz at the end of the race made you forget it was slightly damp and anyway that's one of the joys of winter racing, lots of mud and water makes you look forward to summer even more and it can't be any harder than this, can it?
It was a blinding event, with riders caked in mud grinning from ear to ear enthusing over how much fun the racing was and comparing notes and telling tales of encounters with trees and bushes and that ever changing mud. Maddie Horton and Neil Vingoe were presented with the 'Soul of Soggy' awards for their contribution to the fun, courtesy of Certini Cycles, while we think that Devon is currently leading the battle of the Borders...If this sounds like fun or maybe you'd like to score some points for your county then get on over to www.CrossCountryracer.com and get yourself entered for the second round, which is on the 18th January. Why not use it as a springboard for your New Year's resolutions? Or even to shake out all those Christmas cobwebs... You might just like it. It probably won't be wet either, as unfortunately I can't make it...!
Rider Comments:
Peter Robinson - Youth Race Winner: Once I got past the first corner onto the climb I was alright. I got stuck behind a few backmarkers on the last lap but it went okay. The course was pretty tough, it probably wouldn't have been too bad if it hadn't had so much mud and the fact I had summer tyres on, it was sunny in Somerset, so I thought I'd be alright! The best bit for me had to be the long descent, just so I could get a rest.
Richard Jansen - Second Youth Race: I just went a bit too quick coming through they water splash on the first lap and unfortunately lost control and skidded off, I tried to get back on as quick as I could, I was lucky that the bike was fine. I'd tried to stay with Peter on the start but he managed to pull away and he managed to get a few minutes gap on me in the end, I just had to dig in and concentrate on keeping in second. It was tough out there especially in the mud it was so hard to control the bike, but that's part of the fun of winter racing just getting wet and muddy, you can't beat it!
Bow Jango Cann - Second Juvenile: It was pretty hard out there, I got pretty tired on the last lap trying to catch up to the second placed rider but I managed to dig deep and pulled it off. I had a real tussle for second, all the way really with us both charging for the front, in the end I just had to keep away from him to take second - it was hard but I did it.
Matt Jepson - Fun Race Winner: I only just managed to get to Neil on the tail end of the last lap and pulled off the win. There were two guys ahead of me for most of the race looking quite strong, I could just about catch glimpses of them as we went round and then I dug in on the last grassy climb, climbed that quite well and then just upped my pace and brought them back and took when I had the chance. My climbing was very strong but their descending was quicker, but I just reeled them in. Great course, it's always good here, the conditions were a bit filthy but that just added to the fun. Fantastic way to spend a Sunday morning!
Neil Vingoe - Second Fun: This is my first Soggy Bottom, so it was difficult knowing what the competition might be like. I thought I had the race sewn up, well up to the last 30 seconds of the race when Matt just went at me like I was stood still on the last few yards and you can't really argue with that. He had a bit more in the tank than I did, so good on him. It was a fantastic race with the guy who ultimately got third, I really enjoyed the too-ing and fro-ing with him, it was excellent fun and such a good race. I'll certainly be coming back to do the next rounds, I think I might enter the Sport race this time though as I have a better idea what to expect now. I thought I'd start off easy see where I was at and now I know so I'll be looking forward to that extra lap, I just hope I have that in me!
Tim Flooks - Grand Vet Winner: It was an okay race we were together on the first lap - Rob got past me at the top, but at the bomb holes I thought I'd better get past him and then I didn't see him again after the descent. Three laps were hard but once you got the pain out of the way you just kept plugging around. I picked my way through the tech sections though I have to admit I was a bit out of control a lot of the time, I don't have the skills I used to have! It was good though a cracking course, it always is here. The rain just made it more interesting too especially the off camber stuff that was fun, in the dry it's so easy to ride but on days like today it was hard but fun. A great soggy bottom, both the race and me!
Edward Welsh - Juvenile Winner: I just tried to follow the youth riders out on this one as they had an extra lap; I managed to do quite well in amongst them and got quite a good win in the juvenile race as a result.
The downhills were brilliant even in the mud; it was so much fun, such a good race.
Jay Horton - Masters Winner: We were really lucky out there today in our race as Phil Morris was tipped to win it by about 15 miles, but he broke his chain 20 yards after the start so we all laughed as we left him behind, then I came up behind him on the third lap and slapped him on the rear called him a big welsh girl! It was fun. But to be honest the result was sort of secondary to the battle that went on amongst us as Pete Dawe has dropped down to master for this race, I think next year he goes into Vets, so I think he was just having a pop here to see what all the fuss was about, so yeah the battle with Pete Dawe and Ollie Taylor was just awesome, and of course for Certini it was just brilliant.
The course was good even though I seemed to be going sideways more than I was going forward, but then I'm just a bit of a roadie at heart and most other riders had no trouble with the technical bits, I have no technical ability at all, though I'm pretty good at pedaling and being fit! So I just caned it to the last hill and got a gap. It was so fast and I was so out of control just ping-ponging around the singletrack and then hitting the river crossing as hard as you could to wash the bike and hopefully lose some of the mud, otherwise I'm sure my chain would have snapped like Phil's did.
Winter racing is the best, it sorts the men from the boys and is so much fun!
Sam Cann - Vet Ladies: I did enjoy it out there, it's hard work but a great challenge but it's so good to be out there. Winter racing is brilliant it pushes you to the limit and it's so much fun. Unfortunately there weren't too many vet ladies out there with me, but I always do a PB and then see how I lap. My main goal is to make sure my husband doesn't lap me and he didn't so that was a result.
Tim Fey - Vets: It wasn't too bad out there, pretty mucky but it was all good. This is probably the first time the event has lived up to its name, most of the other series have been dry, this was quite hard work. There were a lot of riders out there and that made it quite tough too.
It's hard to tell when you're out there who you're racing against, you just keep going hard until you finish and hope for the best!
Emily Curtin - Masters Women: The race went well considering I really wasn't in the mood to do this first thing, but once I got into it I started to enjoy it. I thought I went off a bit too fast but I managed to keep it together and only had one little collision with a tree and ended up in the bushes, I just misjudged what I was doing with the mud and just fell off the course completely it was so funny. But no it was all good, I felt great in the end so I was so pleased to get in with the win. It always quite a busy start and going virtually into a steep climb just after can be a bit awkward as some riders don't always ride it and some get in the way, it's good if you can pick your way through this section and this is were I made some ground initially on the other girls and than I managed to sustain the lead despite the off. The bomb holes had to be my favourite sections, they were quite flowy and you could get some memento going, I can't say the river crossing as I had someone with me both times I went over and I just got soaked each time. The climbs just aren't enjoyable but a great test of fitness to actually do them so that's good in its own way.
I wasn't aware that I'd managed to get such a good gap on my rivals I tend not to look back when I'm racing as I start making mistakes and start panicking if I do, so I just focus on what I'm doing and that works for me.
The race certainly lived up to its name today but you know what it's gonna be like this time of year so its not a shock!
Cassie Rowe - Sports Women Winner: It was a good win but a bit of a hard one, but I enjoyed it, it was good fun. This is my second only Cross Country race, I did a Soggy last year and really enjoyed it so I thought I'd come back and give it another go, I was going to do the next one last year but the weather was so bad I gave it a miss. Even though the weather was a bit off at this one I couldn't wait to do it, I was pretty keen. It was wicked. A great course and such a great crowd here.
Hopefully I'll do the rest of the series; it's great to get some points for Cornwall along the way!
Edward Kerly - Sports Race: Very happy to win that, that was sweet. It was steep, fast, just perfect. It was awesome honestly, the singletrack was excellent. The race itself was pretty close the lead changed quite a few times and there were quite a few stacks along the way. It was quite busy in the singletrack and a little argy bargey with elbows out and I caught a tree and snapped my brake lever but still managed to carry on. I had to chase hard to get back on terms but it all paid off in the end. I'm looking forward to tackling all the dry dusty trails in January!
Jon Locke - Expert/Elite: It was a fast start in our race and that climb so early on was a shock to the system, especially as it's been 4 years since I last did a mountain bike race, since then I've been concentrating on the road. Doing this just helps break up the monotony of training.
I'm local so just borrowed a mate's mountain bike and thought I'd give it a go. The course was excellent so tough and became harder and harder as it started to dry out, it was good fun though. I stayed with one guy on the first lap, but he'd started pretty quick and I think he started to pay for his efforts and he died off the pace and I didn't see anyone again.
It was good though complete with a couple of comedy spills. The river crossing was a blessing it helped wash of some of the mud on the bike, losing about a stone in weight and letting me change gear!
I hope I'll be back for the next one, but I've just signed for new pro road team and hopefully they'll give me the go ahead to ride this as part of my training. I'd love to get back to mountain biking but the team I've joined is just road, so I'll be doing that for a while longer.
