Whyte Winter Series
Brandon Park
Sunday 9 Nov 2008
Report & Images: Joolze Dymond
Six hundred hundred expectant riders held their breaths and crossed their fingers hoping against hope that the first round of the eagerly anticipated Whyte Winter series run by Thetford MTB would be a dry one. After a summer season of XC and enduro racing where seemingly every race has offered mud, a bit more mud and just for a change mud, could the winter be the new summer?
So with one eye on the weather and another on the competition we all made ourway to Brandon Park and were duly rewarded. Firstly with a cracking 7.5 mile course that weaved its sinuous way through wooded singletrack, leaving no room for any respite and secondly, but oh so importantly, a gloriously clear blue sky?
With registration open at 8am the car park was soon full of riders relishing the chilly but dry conditions and as the clock inched it way forwards, towards the start times, so did the riders, rapidly filling their allotted pens well before kick off to ensure that all so important start position.
Commentator 'Fat Tony' came prepared for Remembrance Sunday as did many riders, who respectfully carried poppies on their number boards. Tony went one step further and came dressed head to foot in scarlet. And at 10.28, just 2 minutes before the race was off, the riders held a minute of silence in respect to all who had fallen for their country while Tony read a resounding eulogy.
Sun, such a rarity in 2008, finally shone at a MTB event
It was then time for the first wave of competitors to start their races in earnest. First off were the women, contemplating the 4 hour race, with the 4 hour men race hot on their heels. Then it was the juniors and so forth. Wave after wave of riders surged from the dark start line bursting into the brilliant sunshine ready for some 'hot' winter fun.
With so many riders on the course, the first lap for many was a bit stop and start, but once the field had a chance to spread out the riders were able to fully enjoy the every aspect of the course including the innocuously named 'Grassy Climb'. As they began the climb it looked very unimpressive however by time riders reached the 'summit' opinions on how flat Thetford was had radically altered! For some it was a feature they had to accomplish just twice however for a select few in the 4hr race they would be enjoying that energy sapping climb at least 8 times over the course of their race?
For the fun riders, their aim was 2 laps of the course and the winner Si Lancaster completed this in just under 79 minutes, with Andy Simpson and Graham Smith, hot on his tail picking up 2nd and 3rd respectively. Imogen Buick kicked of what was to be a good day in the office for the Buick family, by not only picking up first lady home in the fun class, just nudging mum Sara out by a whisker, but also taking a clear win in the under 16 category, not bad for a 13 year old and she finished a well placed 7th overall to boot!
Meanwhile sister Anna was finding her own feet in the senior women's 2 hour race, this being her first senior women's race since turning 18 just 3 days previously. Despite feeling strong she wasn't quite a match for Salsa team-mate Faith Addison who took the win, but carried on the Buick family success with a fine 2nd spot, leaving Niki Humphrey to secure 3rd.
The Salsa Factory racing team also featured heavily in the men's 2hr race with George Budd, leading the race from the gun and fighting the entire race for top honours with Glenn Stanford. In the end just 1 second separated the two with Budd taking first spot.
The family theme continued, with Hollie Bettles taking the win in the junior ladies 2hr race while dad Lloyd (or Big Ring as he's affectionately known!) battled it out in the 4 hr race taking 3rd. While in the junior men's race James Ashby, although heavily challenged by Ross Brinson, held the Mammoth rider off by just 42 secs to take the win which a couple of hours later was added to by dad Paul in the men's 4hr vets race.
Meanwhile the Buick family continued the podium streak with dad Phil's 3rd spot in the men's 2 hour veterans' race after facing a stiff (and younger) challenge from the Ben Hayward Cycles team of John McAndrews and Jef Sharp. This time Sharp had the advantage taking a clear win over McAndrews.
Singlespeeder Lorraine Staley, in the women's 4 hour was just one of many grateful that the rain held off: with D2D not yet a dim and distant thought; it was a pleasure to hit the trails at Thetford in drier conditions. She rode to a well earned 3rd with Malin Tindberg taking the win ahead of Bernie Wolff.
Hot or cold! - riders seemed unsure - short sleeves or scarf?
Vet Paul Ashby once more mixed it up at the head of the men's 4hr race, with eventually winner Stephen James. But as the race came to the closing stages he let James ride away on the last climb, leaving the Torq rider to scoop his first win, while Ashby knew he'd done more than enough to take the veterans' race with a whooping 22min lead on second placed rider John Fettis, while 3rd man Philip Peacock just managed to hold of Steve Heading, piping him to the finish.
In the men's 4 hour race all eyes were on Billy Jo Whenman, who with a newly signed pro contract stuffed in his back pocket was obviously going to be the man to beat. With World Cup intentions on his mind, Whenman made the decision to start his race from the back, figuring that's where he'll be when he starts his campaign next year. In true Whenman fashion he'd gained the lead before the first section of singletrack and was on his way seemingly to victory. However karma had other plans, and Whenman's race was scuppered as he kept puncturing.
"Thetford back" wasn't the only physical threat the course offered!
James and Ashby had to endure a game of yo-yo as they saw Whenman whizz past, only to find him trailside a bit later. Finally they realized the Marin rider wasn't coming back after his 4th puncture and so they rode on, with James taking the victory. Adi Scott had to settle for 2nd and Lloyd Bettles was the remaining senior rider who completed a mind boggling 8 laps to take 3rd whilst the unfortunate Whenman finally settled for 4th.
As the final trickle of riders crossed the line well over 4 hours later, the much-promised rain began to fall. It was clear that Thetford was indeed owed one after the downpour suffered at the popular D2D and the event and the nation's suffering enduro riders got the reprieve they so desperately craved. With these events selling out fast you'll get an idea how popular they are. If you want to come and give it a go and see what all the fun is about, get your entry in now, as the next event on the 7th December is already filling up fast.
Rider Comments:
Lorraine Staley: "I was really hoping that we wouldn't get another muddy race, I just couldn't face it. The forecast wasn't looking good, but if it does rain here, it drains well and I love racing here so I thought I'd risk it, I'm so glad I did. It was a very enjoyable 4 hours out there, well apart from cramp around lap 3, which kept perpetuating, but hey it was okay. It was busy out there today which in a way is good to see so many riders out there, but it's nice when the 2 hour race finishes as the trails empty considerably and it's then like going out for a little ride by yourself, you forget you're racing almost, it's lovely. I really enjoy the last 2 hours, it's really quiet and you can fully enjoy the swoopy singletrack. It was good fun out there especially on singlespeed, it's a first outing for my new steed, a custom job and it was ace. Looking forward to the next round already, it's tough here but so rewarding, I'm so glad I came.
Stephen James - 4 hr winner: That was a great 4 hour battle out there: it started out really quick, Billy's (Whenman) fault! Then he (Billy) punctured, then came past us. After that I got in quite a nice groove with Paul Ashby, we helped each other along quite a lot, so I just concentrated keeping a nice rhythm with him out there, concentrating on not making mistakes and keeping it flowing and we just kept pushing on as hard as we could. After about another lap we caught Billy again, I think he'd punctured again, I'm not quite sure what was going on in his race, it seemed a bit unfortunate for him, but yeah in the end it all came good for me and I'm so pleased. I just kept stuffing myself full of gels and kept the pedal on the gas. Paul let me go on the grassy climb, just a few minutes from the end, I think he had plenty left but he just said go. It was really good riding with him and thanks to him for a good afternoon and thanks too to my partner Joanna for standing out in the wind and handing me my bottles. The course was fantastic, despite the heavy rains last night, it rode well, it was fast, and grippy and flowed so well and of course this is my local course I know it fairly well. Considering Thetford is reputedly 'flat' there were a few killer bits out there, especially the grassy climb, by the 8th lap it started to get pretty heavy going.
I'm so pleased this is my first win, so obviously my training is hitting the mark, so I guess I should thank Matt Hart from Torq too!!! I've set myself a bit of a high target haven't I for the rest of the series now!
Anna Buick - 2 hour senior women: Fantastic race out there today, this is my first race as a senior and I was so happy that the sun was shining. I felt pretty strong out there after feeling pretty rough at the event I rode last weekend and the course was fantastic. It's the type of course you have to feel strong on as it can be very draining and I had to take the power off a bit towards the end as I started to suffer a bit from the dreaded 'Thetford back'. Other than that it was a fantastic race and really enjoyed myself out there. Being my first senior race it was good to be with a group of strong women but I didn't know who they were and what their strengths would be, I've never been in a field that big before and it's quite weird to start and have no idea where you might finish. Before I always had a good idea where I'd come and how I compared to the other riders today I just had to go for it, I absolutely nailed the first lap. The idea was to get a bit of a gap on Nikki (Humphreys) as she had a bit of a skid, so I took my chance when I could, I didn't know how my form would compare to hers but I took that chance and found I could hold her off and just kept the power down. My team-mate Faith was even stronger and there were no thoughts of team tactics, she just left me for dead! She got a great start and managed to get through the traffic really well and I just caught it wrong, which didn't help but I don't think that would have affected the outcome. There were a lot of riders on quite a short course but mainly the riders were very good about it. So yeah good start to the winter series and getting this result has given me a bit of confidence.
Phil Buick - 2 hour vets: Good day, great course, I didn't have the best of starts and there was quite a bit of traffic about but I was pretty consistent with my last 3 laps pretty much the same time. It was great to see the team do so well, with George (Budd) winning the 2 hour men's and Faith winning the 2 hour women's plus Anna picking up second, me in 3rd and of course Imogen who we think won the under 16 race as well as pick up 7th overall in the fun race.
Can't wait for the next round lets just hope the rain stays away there too.
Sara Flatt - Fun Class: Well we've had a busy summer and I am trying to be a bit more structured about how I train over the winter. So the plan is at the moment is to take it a bit easier and do some steady miles and I foolishly thought that racing the fun category with Imogen might be the easy miles bit, but I was wrong and she definitely had the beating of me on the first lap and it was only on the second lap where she started to fade a bit where I started to feel a bit more comfortable. We both had a great time out there, she got ahead of me a few times and I had to chase her down. It was excellent but I had to cross the line after her?
Imogen Buick- Fun: It was wicked out there and I really enjoyed it. I felt so strong today and I had a really good race. I loved the course and of course it was nice to have mum out there with me as we had a bit of a chat in places and it was a bonus that the day was dry.
