The NPS returned to the familiar riding grounds of Eastridge, Shropshire, after a break of nearly a decade and riders were not disappointed as they were rewarded with a truly epic course, containing a lung busting 1000ft of climbing per lap, coupled with some incredible descents and to top it all off the sun was shining, a seemingly rare commodity this year.

After a constant weather watch and plenty of finger-crossing, prayers were answered and the sighs of relief could be heard for miles as riders delightedly realized that a dry race would be on the cards. A small but difficult 7km circuit lay in wait for competitors eager to pick up points after a break in the series in July.

The Course

A cruel start overlooked by the impressive Ponsbury Hill, saw the riders pelt away from the gun up a draggy, grassy slope. This first drag saw the field of each race resemble a thin, brightly-coloured ribbon as riders soon began to feel the effects of the slope, coupled with race pace.

More climbing, some on fire tracks, some on technical, rocky slopes and some on seemingly endless singletrack through head-high ferns quickly replaced a quick respite on a stretch of singletrack.

Then it was time to tackle the descents, a series of steep, hairy moments, interspersed with some interesting and taxing log obstacles, whilst sweeping as fast as you dare through a myriad of tress, before finally descending to the bottom of the old downhill course which popped you out onto the last grassy descent towards the finish line, the choice of line here involved a double jump if you were feeling brave!

Stop watching TV, there's racing to be done!

It was surprising that any racing got underway as riders and spectators were glued to the TV in the arena, watching the men’s Olympic mountain bike race, hoping that our dreams of medals would come true with our representatives Liam Killeen and Oli Beckingsale in good form. Despite the disappointment of Liam’s crash, future stars soon started to line up ready to tackle the course.

First to the line were the Juveniles and Orange Monkey Alex Baker soon threw down the gauntlet to the rest of his category as the youngster romped away up the first climb, thinning the competition out quickly as he got into his stride. Once the gap was open that was that, and Baker continued to eke out his advantage, leaving the rest to fight it out for the minor placings, taking the win with a 27 min lap. Behind Baker the race for 2nd and 3rd was pretty tight, coming down to a sprint finish between Matt Godden & Ryan Fenwick, Godden got it by a whisker, and thus the tone for the rest of the day’s racing was set - fast and furious, on a course to test the best.

Beth Crumpton, who rode away from the rest of the field with ease, once more dominated Juvenile Women. Hannah Ferguson took 2nd just over 3 mins later with Imogen Buick taking 3rd.

Kenta Gallagher was rewarded for his epic 28 hr journey to get to this round with a resounding win in the youth race. Despite not finding the climbing to his liking he relished the technical descents and managed to open an almost 2 minute lead over 2nd placed rider Steven James. Orange Monkey got yet another podium as Ben Roff picked up 3rd. Hugo Humphreys’ bid for a podium was dashed as a crash on one of the logs during lap 2 saw the young rider badly grazed and bruised.

In the Youth Women’s race all eyes were on rising star Ruby Millar, however her race preparations the week before had been riding a full-on week at the Junior National Track Championships, where she rode consistently, picking up numerous podium spots, with this in mind she looked pretty tired as she lined up to get stuck in. Even at this young age Millar is a true pro and putting behind a busy week she got on with the job in hand and rode a strong race. Then, disaster, as on the beginning of lap 2 a puncture saw this plucky youngster having to take the decision to run/ride on the rim for the entire lap, not easy on such a technical course. Still she came home in a respectable time to take the win with ease from fellow youth rider Katy Winton.

Grand Vet Debbie Burton having no competition in her category pitted her talents against the younger vet ladies, coming home ahead of eventual Vets Lady winner Kate Wheeler by just under a minute. Wheeler’s team mate, Gaynor Lea was hot on her heels but had to settle for 2nd whilst Sarah Bayliss took 3rd.

Rosina Kerswell got stuck in with the other Ladies categories setting off at the same time and having a cracking race, coming home in just under 1hr 20mins to take the Open Women’s race.

With the morning’s racing done and dusted, and the course drying up nicely it was soon time for the next set of categories to fight for those all important points.

A strong Elite field soon got underway, containing Ian Bibby, Dave Fletcher, Ian Wilkinson, Adrian Lansley, Gareth Montgomerie and Paul Oldham to name but a few. Some of these riders had just returned from a gruelling 7-Day Mountain Bike version of the Tour de France, so it was anyone’s guess who would have the legs for this testing course.

Paul Oldham was keen to make his mark, memories of his victory here as an Espoir at the National Champs back in ’99 came flooding back. When Bibby launched an attack on the climb it was Oldham who responded and the two soon had a gap on the rest of the splintering field. Soon the two became three as Montgomerie managed to breach the gap, but Bibby, his legs on fire after some hot racing in Belgium got away on the climb and with all the descending master classes he’s been having over the winter from DH legend Will Longden, was tackling the descents with ease and soon was out on his own, eventually taking the win after five long laps. Montgomerie managed to consolidate his position and held off Oldham to take 2nd, with Oldham taking 3rd.

Another rider with fond memories of riding at Eastridge was Elite Woman Jenny Copnall, she won her first National medal here back in ’96 when she picked up a bronze, so she was delighted to get the chance to ride a modified version of one of the UK’s favourite courses from the heyday of XC racing in the ‘90’s.

However the day was not to be hers as she couldn’t quite find her usual rhythm and found herself fighting for the entire race to take 3rd. Up in front and riding with ease and confidence was Jenn O’Connor, delighting in the climbs, she practically romped away from the rest of the field to take her first XC NPS win of the year. Battling behind in 2nd was relative rookie Mel Spath, who, pre-race, admitted that she was not looking forward to the relentless climbing. However she confided that the descents more than made up for all the climbing and she proved her up and coming talent by taking a cracking 2nd.

Tim Dunford took control of the Expert race with just Paul Robertson able to keep the Hargroves rider in his sights. The first couple of laps were a case of catch me if you can as Dunford powered up the hills, with Robertson making it back on he descents, but by lap three Dunford was out on his own and took the win with a time that would have placed him in the top 10 of the Elite race. Meanwhile Robertson consolidated his ride with a 2nd while Ben Thomas took 3rd.

With Lily Matthews off riding the TransWales and Abi Greenaway a no-show, Hilana Marais had a slightly easier task in the Expert Women’s race. It was no push-over as Lucinda Insall-Jones and Sally Gabriel were keen to upset the ex triathlete's plans of global domination! However despite the competition, Marais took the win with Insall-Jones and Gabriel taking 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In the junior race, Joe Peake had a blinder of a ride taking his first XC NPS win this year, leaving the rest of the field in his wake. Obviously the combination of tough climbs coupled with tougher descents played into his hands, leaving Rob Hussan to take 2nd just over 2 mins adrift while Will Verney picked up 3rd.

Despite suffering chronic back pain after lap one, Junior Annabel Simpson took the win in her race with ease, leaving team mate Carla Haines to pick up 3rd whilst rapidly improving Anna Buick took 2nd. Apologies goe to Junior Danielle Rider, every time I cheer her on she crashes, or so she tells me, and well this race was no different (right, must remember not to cheer her next time!)

The Masters race was, as usual, one of the hardest fought races of the day and it was Matt Barrett who looked at ease out there as he flew around the course leading from the front to eventually take the win. Scott Forbes tried hard to keep the gap from growing but had to concede 3 mins to take 2nd, while Ben Dale took 3rd.

Newly crowned Masters Women’s National Champion Nina Davies looked distinctly uncomfortable on some of the technical descents but looked incredibly strong on the climbs. However, Ruth Mordaunt found the conditions suited her well and despite having to battle with Davies on the climbs, managed to make a gap on the technical sections, finally taking the win with nearly a 2 min margin. Emma Bradley claimed 3rd.

Finally the last series of races got under way containing the guys who never seem to get any slower, despite getting older!

Living in an area devoid of any major off-road climbs might have been a disadvantage and despite feeling a bit ropey on the opening climb Vet Darren Shepherd soon got into his stride putting his technical skills to good use making short work of the descents to open up a reasonable gap. Keen to put his hill climbing skills to good use was Andy Weaving who caught Shepherd on the climbs but couldn’t match his descending speeds leaving the delighted Shepherd to take the win, while Weaving had to settle for 2nd, whilst Roland Tilley took 3rd in a tightly-contested race which saw just 3min 48secs separate the top five finishers.

Grand Vet Ian Wright took yet another win, despite a major tussle with Kevin Townsend and Roy Hunt. Wright put all his effort into the climbs, knowing that his technical skills weren’t quite as strong as the other riders. He just managed to squeeze 33 secs out of 2nd placed Townsend as he took the win, while Hunt took 3rd.

Victor Barnett was delighted with the severity of the course as he romped once more to the win in the Super Vets, great preparation for the forth coming World Masters XC that he’s aiming to medal in once more. Chris Hearn and Steve Collen took 2nd & 3rd respectively.

The men’s sports race was a pretty close-run affair with 4 riders vying for the top spot throughout the race but it was Dave Henderson who took the honours, with Alex Kinviq taking 3rd and Giles Drake 3rd. Meanwhile early race leader Niall Frost had to settle for 4th.

Perry Bowater, having missed the Junior race, took on the Open race instead. Using the race as part of a season wind-down, this young road rider romped away from the start and just managed to hold onto the lead as Joe Chidley started to close in on him on the last lap. Vince Potter took 3rd.

As each race finished it was clear to see this course had been a resounding hit, as beaming smiles said more than words ever could. For riders who’d ridden here in the past it was a welcome return to a challenging course and to new riders again it was a chance to use their technical skills as they descended as fast as they could. It was a great day’s racing made better by a cracking course and some sterling support from marshals on the course, as the whooped and cheered and shouted and rattled as the riders flew by, a definite day to remember!

There is now less than 3 weeks to the last round and there is every thing to play for as the last round carries double points. The organisers once more promise a challenging course in uncharted territory, so it should be a cracking ‘edge-of-the-seat’ finish to the season. Make sure you’re there to watch the action unfold and why not take a bike and have a go yourself!

Riders Comments:

Debbie Burton – Grand Vet
It was a great course and very enjoyable. A bit of a mega climb but the descents made up for it! It was incredibly slippery, especially over the roots; a few sections had me off, one being one of those logs. I tried to pace it a little bit, you always try not to go like a bat out of hell on the start, with that in mind I tucked in behind Kate (Wheeler) to begin with, then got past and just concentrated on staying in front. It certainly wasn’t a course for the ladies, but I really liked all the technical stuff, it suited me and was great fun.

Ruby Miller – Youth
It was really bad out there today; it didn’t really go to plan! I’d been racing all week at the Youth Track Champs in Newport, in fact Friday I was riding the junior points and we got here 12.30am. Woke up early did a practise lap and was thinking blimey, it’s a bit muddy. Race time I got stuck in but on my second lap I got a puncture pretty near the start, so I had to continue on the rim which was pretty hairy. I walked quite a bit! The first lap was okay but I didn’t really warm up too well and I was just doing silly things out there and got no rhythm going, come the second lap and I was starting to enjoy myself, but then I got that puncture and it was just horrible.

Beth Crumpton – Juvenile
It was hilly out there, so the perfect course for me, but it just seemed to go up all the time, it was so tiring and I had a few mechanicals that I had to stop and fix, but I just got back on and carried on riding hoping not to get a puncture as it was really rocky. It was great to be out there wearing my national jersey and actually finish the race!

Alex Baker – Juvenile
That has to rank as one of the hardest races I’ve ever done and yet the most enjoyable! I really loved the course today it was excellent. I train for technical courses and this was very technical, so it just suited me. I managed to get away on the first climb. I tried not to look back and just concentrated on how I was riding, I managed to open up a pretty good gap by the end. Being a juvenile you only have 1 lap to get it right, it’s frustrating, you have to give it your all, you can’t play any tactics, like taking it easy and attacking on the second lap, you really just have to go all out from the gun and that’s what I did today and I managed to get the win.

Kenta Gallagher – Youth
It was pretty good today I got a good start so that helped. It felt pretty good out there in my national jersey it’s sort of the first time I’ve worn it and yeah it felt good to be out there. I’m surprised to have opened up such a good lead as I felt pretty rubbish on the climbs; I just went for it on the downhills. The climbs were just so steep here, but it was well worth it just to be able to do those descents. Great day’s racing well worth the 28hr journey to get here!

Annabel Simpson – Junior
I had a good first lap but then my back started hurting for the next 2, I’d made quite a good lead on the opening lap so I just made the effort to hang on and get to the finish. I think my seat position slipped or something I’m not sure but it wasn’t helping my back, but it’s good to be able to take home a win, it’s a shame Annie (Last) isn’t here, but I’ll get her next time. There was heck of a lot of climbing and I quite like that, I really enjoyed the challenge that the course provided, we need more courses like this that test you to the limit. As far as the rest of the field goes, I left them on the start and just didn’t look back, I caught a few of the elite women on the first climb so I just based my race against them really. Having such a technical course is excellent, it’s so good to be pushed, there’s no point in racing easy courses all the time it just won’t help when I go out to World Cup races.

Ruth Mordaunt – Master
This was a fantastic mountain bike course, lots of technical descents, the climbing was hard work, but the technical descents were fast and furious and I really enjoyed it. This has to be on a par with Drumlanrig, just because of the technical side I just love it. I came into the race, just to enjoy it and not put pressure on myself, I knew that Nina was on form and won the Nationals fair and square on a different type of course, but on this type of course it suited me better I really got stuck in as I was enjoying myself so much and to get the win was just a bonus.

Nina was very strong on the climbs but I had the edge on the descents I think, well she’d catch me back up on the hills, we’d have a bit of a battle then I’d get away on the descents. It was a great race utilising all our strengths and weaknesses, that’s how it should be. Related: Altura Patterson Training's Round 4 Blog

Tim Dunford – Expert
I really enjoyed it today, I felt good from the off so I decided to go from the gun pretty much, by the top of the first climb I kicked in and it was just Paul (Robertson) who came with me, he was a bit better on the descents than me but it was a bit slippery and I thought well if you try too hard you’ll just come off, so I concentrated on the climbs and made big digs there. Paul managed to get me back on the second lap as well but after that I didn’t see him again I’m quite happy with that. I was picking off elite riders as I went too I think I was probably in the top 10 of the elite race too. It’s been a bit frustrating riding Expert this year, I used to ride Elite but I couldn’t get a licence this year, but I’m sure I’ll be riding Elite now next year so that’ll be all good. It certainly ranks as the most technical course I’ve ridden for a while, the climbs were just brilliant, and the descents were quite scary. Great course that held up well in the weather.

Ian Bibby – Elite
I’m pretty happy with that ride today, it was a really good course that suited me so I was lucky I reckon. I guess it was good to win here, a bit of a bonus that helps with the disappointment from the Nationals. I’ve just come back from Belgium where I’ve been riding quite a few road races and that’s been going well and I did the mountain bike Tour de France too and I go some good results there but I had a bit of a bad crash so I was obviously doing a good ride today.

I wanted to see if I could get away quickly, normally I start a race quite steadily and build it up but today I wanted to see if I could wind it up from the gun making it a bit harder for me and see how it goes. I went off on the first lap and saw I’d opened a bit of a gap so seized my chance. Though to be honest I think I went a bit too hard to start with on the first lap, though I think we all did, I managed to hold onto the gap I opened to the end so it was good. It was pretty hard out there. It was great out there a proper course, we could do with more like this to be honest.

Victor Barnett – Super Grand Vet
Another good race that went well again for me. They let me start with the Grand Vets today so that was good. I loved the course. I’m off to France on Wednesday for the Masters Worlds. My race is on Friday and this course is very similar to that, tough climbs, rocky, slippery, so ideal preparation. That was the toughest race of the series so far, excellent, I really enjoyed it.

Perry Bowater – Open
I missed the start of the Junior race so I entered the Open race instead, I knew I would get a good race; I just did it as a one off. I haven’t actually ridden a mountain bike race for over 2 years but my coach he wanted me to do something different as we’re coming to the end of the road season. It was a bit technical out there but it was great fun. I attacked from the start on the hill and just didn’t look back.

Dave Henderson – Sport
That was good, a very tough race and quite a slog all the way round, I enjoyed the descents. I’m fortunate in that the Scottish series I usually ride is very technical so this course suited me but it was still a very difficult race. Niall was leading for the first couple of laps but it was between four of us out there - it was pretty close, quite tight in the end. I put the pressure on the climbs and managed to get a gap on the last lap. The descents just put a huge smile on my face. I just have to add that the spectators that were out on the course were just fantastic, the marshals with the bells and the two girls at the bottom of the climb they were brilliant, so well done for them for keeping us going.

Ian Wright – Grand Vet
It was a good ride out there, I was being pushed all the way out there. I can’t descend very well so I was pushing hard up the climbs to try and build a cushion for the descents. I managed to get mixed up with the vets but that’s because I can climb, but my technical skills aren’t great. Excellent course - a proper good old mountain bike course. Both Kevin (Townsend) and Roy (Hunt) gave me a real hard time today - it was a much closer race and they kept me on my toes.

Hilana Marais– Expert Woman
I really wanted to ride well today, I had to give up my triathlon due to injury, so I started this turning negative into a positive and it turned out to work really well for me. I missed Abi (Greenaway) and Lily (Matthews) today. I trained really hard for this one I hope the form’s there now for the last round, should be fun. I loved the course, I worked on my weaknesses so neither the climbs or the descents bothered me. I was fine and just enjoyed myself.

Darren Shepherd – Vet
I was very pleased with how I rode today; by the top of the first climb I thought I was on for a bad one as I was really, really struggling. I think everyone possibly went too fast to start and then on the technical stuff I came into my own and I managed to get a gap, I was pretty surprised how much I was leading by, in fact at the start of the 2nd lap, I just had to try and maintain it. But what I found was at the top of the climbs every time Andy Weaving was back with me again; I managed to open up the gap again on the descents. Mark Chadbourne blew up - he wasn’t having too good a time out there.

I’m so used to coming second, it makes a welcome change for me to get on that top step. Mark was the first to congratulate me afterwards, which was nice; I’m just really, really pleased to get that win.

Jenn O’Connor – Elite Woman

That was a tough course, that top part of the descent I don’t think anyone was riding that smoothly it was a matter of throwing yourself down I thought I must be losing loads of time as I was making a dog’s breakfast of it on every lap, but I now know that everyone was struggling with it. The climbs - I was just flying and that’s where I was making up my time. I felt really good coming here, I knew I had it in me to win a race but you never know what will happen on the day. I knew I’d always have a fight, Mel (Spath) was really strong. It was a good day and it was great to finally get a win, it’s been a few years!

I loved the course; it would have been exceptional in the dry but this being the UK…. At least it didn’t rain in the race. Related: Altura Patterson Training's Round 4 Blog
