Midland Series Round 3

Midlands XC Round 3 - Sherwood Pines

Sunday 3 August 2008

Images & Report: Joolze Dymond

The final round of the Midlands XC series, saw hundreds of riders congregate in Sherwood Forest to decide the overall series outcome, and who would be champions of the Midlands - plus of course the outcome of each individual category itself, and there wasn't even a hint of green tights in the proceedings but plenty of 'merry' men (and quite a few happy women too!).

Over the years Sherwood Pines has proved itself time and time again to be a popular venue for riders, providing mile upon mile of swoopy singletrack, tight, twisty trails threading through closely packed trees, interspersed with fast fire roads and a couple of soul-sapping drags: flat it may seem at first sight but ask any rider after a race and they'll soon tell you it's not a pushover of a course!

Of the masses of terrain on offer, a carefully selected 11km loop was picked out in eye catching red and white stripy tape, so there would be no lost riders or indecision at the myriad of tempting singletrack that makes up a maze of trails throughout the forest.
The weather gods smiled, and a humid but dry day was a welcome bonus for the competitors, especially those that braved the wet conditions encountered at R2 in Cannock. Dry and dusty was the order of the day!

The day started off with the Peewee's getting stuck in on a shortened version of the course. Then it was time for the main races to get underway, with the juvenile, youth, junior and all the women's categories bursting from the start line in a brightly coloured wave of categories.

The junior men's race very quickly became a two horse affair with Will Verney keen to get rid of rival Calum Chamberlain, but after numerous digs, the two were still very much locked in battle and to the delight of the crowds the race was decided by a thrilling down to the wire sprint. Verney led out with 400m to go, Chamberlain bided his time and came past the Felt rider on the final bend to claim a well calculated victory. Thomas Stewart picked up third just under 4 minutes later. With Chamberlain a 'southerner' Verney's second spot and qualifying postcode, earned him the Midlands Champs junior title and to cap the day he also picked up the overall series win.

Danielle Rider experiencing a varied year of racing, went out with a bang - despite suffering a mechanical on lap 2 - going on to take the junior women's win and with it, the overall series and the Midlands Champs too.

John Lomas made short work of the race in the juvenile category quickly getting away from the field to take the win and the overall series. Behind him the race was on for the final positions and the all important Championship win. James Hyde and Aaron Sayers matched each other pedal stroke for pedal stroke and again the spectators were treated to a sprint finish, but disaster happened as the riders locked bars and fell, eventually they were awarded joint second for their efforts, with Hyde taking the Champs title. Bethany Crumpton was denied a clean sweep in what has been an incredible year for the juvenile rider. This wasn't her day as a puncture put paid to her thoughts of adding yet another win to her belt, she had to console herself with the series win instead. Meanwhile a delighted Lauren Ellis took home the round win.

Aaron Marshall took a clean sweep in the youth race, taking the round win and with it securing the overall series and taking the championship title too. In the Youth women's race Hollie Bettles upheld family pride by taking the win, leaving her dad Lloyd, a lot to live up to in his masters' race in the afternoon.

The Elite women's race fielded a strong group containing, National silver medallist Paula Moseley, alongside Espoir women's champion Amy Hunt, as well as Marathon specialist Jenn O'Connor: it was anyone's guess who would come out on top. O'Connor, soon eased herself into a steady rhythm, putting her endurance base to good use, spinning out a comfortably pace and in the end this paid off as she took the win and with it the overall series. Moseley couldn't quite match the Kiwi's output despite a feisty challenge and had to settle for second but took the championship, while Hunt still suffering from her debilitating and frustrating illness had a lack-lustre race and took a disappointing third.

Throughout the season a real rivalry has been slowly developing in the expert race, with Hilana Marais clashing with Abi Greenaway. Add into the equation a rapidly improving Sally Gabriel and you have the recipe for a close fought battle. This time out it was Marais's day as she took control of the race and with it the win. Greenaway just managed to fend off a strong challenge by Gabriel, who had to settle for third but took the overall series. The vet's race was claimed by Lynne Coldray; With Emma Bradley coming home on a Torq fuelled caffeine high to take the win in the Masters women ahead of Theresa Jackson and Nikki Humphreys.

Ceri Dipple took a convincing win in the sports race, leaving Nicola Jackson and Karen McBarrons to fight it out for second and third respectively. Despite being pipped to the line McBarrons took the championship title.

With so many riders taking part race timings had to be altered to accommodate everybody and so the afternoon's racing didn't get underway till 2.30pm. Still no one was too worried as they took the chance to soak up the lovely warm day while making use Quaver Catering to transform their wait into a grand day out complete with picnic in the sun!

But all too soon, the racing got underway with some of the biggest fields of the day quickly strung out around the myriad of singletrack.

The Elites went off first, with Dave Fletcher keen to make a mark on his home course, but many more including Lee Williams were keen to scupper the young elite riders plans!
First man through at the end of lap 1 though was Expert rider George Budd. Everyone was stunned with he Salsa rider's turn of speed as he'd have had to have got past the Elites who had a few minutes head start. Budd was soon followed by more expert riders and soon the penny dropped there had been some confusion on the course, where some pesky youngsters had ripped away course tape confusing the expert field who cut a bit of the course out, which is how they managed to get in front of the elites.

As it affected the experts only the race continued and the Elites soon found themselves back out in front. Fletcher pulled out all the stops, riding the race at World Cup pace. Forcing himself on he soon found himself out in front and continued to push on. However the length of the course meant that 5 long laps would be nearly 40 mins longer than the Nationals and the pace suddenly began to tell as the young Espoir started to run out of steam. Keen to take advantage was Welsh rider Lee Williams who was quickly closing the gap and Fletcher just had to keep pushing on hoping that Williams wouldn't catch him.

He finally got to the line after 2 hrs and 14 mins of racing to take the win and the championship title, with Williams a mere 3secs behind in second and Rob Friel picking up third and with it the series win.
20080803_midland_xc_550c
Budd's blinding start was soon overhauled by Paul Robertson and Ben Thomas who fought it out all the way to the line virtually. Robertson took the win just 20secs ahead of Thomas, with John Whittington narrowly pipped Andrew Stuart to third, by a gnats whisker. Budd took 5th. Despite not having an agreeable race Chris Lane did enough to take the overall series by a mere 4 points, while Stuart in fourth was first Midlander home to give him the Championship title.

The men Master's race saw one of the biggest fields. Keen to do well here were Graham Warby, Luke Moseley and Rob Oakes to name but a few in this massive field. Warby was very soon the man on a mission: after a disappointing 5th at the Nationals he was keen to put that behind him and get back to winning ways. Moseley was policing Warby quite well, until a missed bottle saw him fade off the pace, leaving Warby to take the win, while Matthew Dennis moved in for the kill and speed past Moseley to take second and with it the Champs title, while Moseley slipped down to third. Darren Alexander pitched up in a hard fought 7th but did enough to secure the overall series.

Vet Marathon specialist Michael Powell took great delight in the chance to ride on home turf. His companion for the majority of the race was Keith Sperry, but despite a hard fight slipped off the punishing pace to leave Powell to take the Vet's men win and with it the championship title. Sperry took second and with it consolidated his lead in the overall series to claim that victory.

With little racing to his name this year, Roy Hunt is finding it increasingly harder to continue the stranglehold he's held on the Grand Vet category for a number of years. This coupled with the emergence of fast riding Ian Wright in the last year or so and throw into the mix a determined Pete Harris plus Super vet Victor Barnett, and we are at last seeing some great racing in this category. Wright soon made his intentions clear leading the pack from the start and gradually pulled away to eventually take the win and with it the Championship title after 3 long but pretty consistent laps. Hunt took second with Harris picking up third, and with it enough points to secure the overall series win.
20080803_midland_xc_550f
Sports rider, Naill Frost fell foul of removed the race tape throwing him off course, taking him from the front of his race to the middle of the pack. With all guns blazing he wasn't ready to throw in the towel and set off to try and regain the lead, currently being fought out by Giles Drake and Chris Metcalfe. With adrenalin pumping through his veins he roared back to the front and continued to stretch his lead to finally take the win and with it the overall series. Meanwhile Drake and Metcalfe took their fight for the runner up spots to the wire with Drake winning the sprint leaving Metcalfe to take third but being the first Midlander he took claim to the champs title as consolation.

The course certainly proved to be a punishing, with no let up and with a couple of puddles of doom to negotiate it provided some close, seat of the pants racing throughout the day. With a myriad of categories and championships and series winners to be decided it wasn't only the racing that was long and hard, the podium presentations went on for at least 3 laps, or so it seemed, still each winner had earned their right to proudly stand on the podium after a hard raced series.

Riders Comments:

Emma Bradley - R3 masters women winner
That was interesting, fighting out on the course with Theresa; unfortunately she had cramp towards the end. I have to admit to feeling rubbish at the start and seemed to pick up by lap 3, thankfully! I guess my Torq caffeine gel gave me eh boost I really needed.
The course was excellent, on a par with the Nationals but with a bit more climbing and a lot more puddles. It was pretty relentless but we did find a few places to get a rest and a drink, but all in all great fun, loads of twisty singletrack, lots of bits that could catch you out, but just good fun.

Calum Chamberlain - R3 Junior winner
Will kept on attacking the entire race, I think he did 4 big efforts during the race but I just kept reeling him back in and did all the work on the last lap and then had some fun on the sprint finish. Will went with 400m to go but I managed to get round him on the final corner and that was a good end for me, we were right down to the line and I was pretty happy when I came across the line.
The course wasn't really my sort of thing, not enough climbing but it was very fast and good fun.

Hilana Marais- R3 Expert women's winner
I really enjoyed the race today, it was a deceptively hard course, you think that there's no hill, but you have to put the power down all the time, but I really enjoyed it. I found as well that if you relaxed in the wiggly bits it was so much better than trying to hard.
Last time it was my turn to suffer the lottery of mountain biking with a mechanical, but that's part of the sport, today though it was my day. I sure now the rivalry between me and Abi (Greenaway) will be more intense at the next NPS as we battle for control of the series, but rivalry is always good for racing and I'm looking forward to it.

Danielle Rider - R3 Junior women winner
Yeah it was alright out there despite having a bit of a technical problem on the second lap, but I got that sorted and yeah it was alright. This year has been brilliant for giving me a load of confidence and hopefully next year I can step up and start challenging for NPS wins.
The course was brilliant, I'm lucky as I'm local to here so I'm used to riding here and I love it. I'm so happy to have done so well in the regionals and now I'm looking forward to getting stuck into a winter of 'cross. I just have to say a big thanks to AandR Smartcar Repairs and Sherwood Pines Cycles for giving me loads of support this year.

Jenn O'Connor - R3 Elite Women's winner
It was a really good fun race that was probably the best Sherwood Pines course I've ever ridden, it rode really fast and really smoothly and was just really enjoyable. I didn't know how I'd fare against Paula and Amy today, they're both fast and fit riders but I've been doing a lot of marathons and my endurance is really strong, so I just stuck at a pace I was comfortably with and saw how I was at the end and it worked it alright and yeah it was a good ride.
This is only the third XC race I've done this year, it's good to get out there and have a thrash round, it helps keep the speed in your legs. So yeah it was a good race, really good fun I really enjoyed myself.

David Fletcher - R3 Elite men's winner
That was a very good race, very hard, in fact a lot harder than it could have been. I deliberately made it hard for myself, riding the last 3 laps to my limit, in fact I wasn't sure I'd make it round the last lap, I was absolutely dying. The race was a bit longer than I'm used to, probably 40mins longer than the Nationals and I just started to fade at the end.
Lee (Williams) had a few problems at the start of the race, so I just capitalized on that and got about a minute and half advantage by the fourth lap, then it all came down to about 20yards in the end. I just had a massive fade if there had been another lap I wouldn't have been able to finish. Great course, with all the work that gone on here, there's a lot more trails to ride which of course the race took advantage of, it was fast and technical and just great fun.

Naill Frost - R3 Sport men's winner
A great end to a brilliant series, it's been really well organised with some varied and interesting courses and it's been so friendly. I had a so so race, I was leading for the first lap and then I went wrong, as the tape had been removed, so when I got back on the course I was so angry I just threw the toys out the pram and just went for it! Obviously that works for me! I think maybe someone should poke me with a stick at the start of each race now to get me fired up! I got it in the big ring and just went for it and just focused on getting back in the lead. I had some aggression to work out as someone stole my bike this week as well.
It's was a great event and again I must congratulate the organisers who did a great job.

Graham Warby - R3 master's men winner
It was good today, made up for the ride I did at the nationals, I was pleased with my 5th back then, I had a little dip in form but it's come back now and I feel really good. I wasn't going to come this morning as it's about 120 miles, so it's quite a long way but I'm pleased I did in the end. It was a great course, well apart from the one muddy bit, other than that it was fun.
I was riding round with Luke (Moseley) for the first couple of laps but he missed a bottle so he blew a little towards the end.

Ian Wright - R3 Grand Vet winner
Me, Pete (Harris) and Roy (Hunt) have a right good old ding ding round a cracking course. There was no catching Pete for the overall series win has he's cleared up, Mr Consistency. He had a bit of a mishap out there today, a wee tumble where he bent his rear mech, he's finding it harder to sat on his bike these days! Great course and the organisers have done a brilliant job, I've really enjoyed it.

Michael Powell - R3 Vet Winner
Great course, but I must admit it was a bit of an advantage today riding here as I know Clipstone so well, so some of the course I knew really well, but other bits I'd never ridden, so it kept me on my toes. Keith was going really well, in fact the first lap I was thinking well you can go, as I was suffering so much. The second lap wasn't too bad and on the third lap I went to the front and pressed on and he couldn't respond so I kept going and that was it. I was quite pleased with that as XC isn't my primary focus, I'm more into marathon riding really.

James Hampshire and Nadine Spearing - Series Organisers

James - Overall it's been an interesting year, it's been great to see so many people riding, we just haven't anticipated having so many riders keen to come and have a go, you just have to see what the series used to be like and how like the Welsh guys struggle with a similar series, so to have 320 people here today is just awesome. Whether we do it all again next year we'll just have to see, we did this to start with as we wanted local races that we could race ourselves and we wanted ranking points and as we found out pretty quickly you can't organise a race and take part. Having said that it's satisfying to watch and it's great to see people enjoy it and it's good just having courses that are fun, you don't always want the hardest and the most technical you just sometimes want some fun.

Nadine - We're really pleased as we've come a long way, in fact it's a tear ago to the day that we held out first race, so in space of a year we've held 5 races and each race has sort of grown and developed, as in what we are able to offer, so we are really pleased with how he series has progressed. It's been sheer hard work and not for the faint hearted, I guess if you were doing this full time you'd probably get a lot more out of it, but doing this and combining it with training and the day job, it's pretty tough.
