After a long cold and wet night, everyone was delighted as Thetford was once more enveloped in its own little microclimate as we woke to glorious blue skies and just a touch of frost. The glimpses of frost soon burnt off and by 10am with riders gathering for the first Whyte Enduro of the season, the air was buzzing with excitement.

Over 400 hundred riders hustled and bustled to the start line, keen to get stuck into the miles of singletrack that lay in wait. The previous day's Cross-Country course had been tweaked to extend it to 12.2 km per lap and some sections reversed so riders didn't feel they were just riding the same, but longer, course. A lot of thought and attention had been put into making sure the riders had a grand day out.

Aided and abetted by the marshals of the local trail building group - TROGS, who were in much demand as some who shall remain nameless understand that riding on a taped out trail the wrong way, despite being constantly told - the races got underway safely.

The 100km race gets off the line

First off were the 100km guys and girls, with the Felt duo of Will Bjergfelt and Duncan Jamieson making all the right moves, heading the race, in near perfect symmetry as they zoomed round the course, leaving the rest of the field in chase mode. After 8 fast laps, which Bjergfelt likened to being in a Star Wars movie as they sped, weaving a tight course around the multitude of trees, the duo came home to take the first 2 steps of the podium, with Jamieson picking up the win.

Twelve minutes later was Irish rider Ryan Sherlock, delighted to have had a better ride than the previous day, taking a well earned third. His companion for the majority of the race was vet Paul Ashby, who despite a hard race the previous day got stuck in and came home in fourth spot in the 100km but took the win in the vets category, with rival Michael Powell taking second and event sponsor rider Steve Heading picking up third.

A much closer race developed in the women's 100km race as Sally Bigham had Irish rider Mel Spath close on her heels the entire race, Bigham took the win with a margin of just 47secs: perhaps the race the previous day where Spath took second in the elite women's race meant Bigham had the fresher legs. Still it was great to see a tight battle unfold. Liz Scalia picked up third a slight consolation for her disastrous race the previous day where she lost a pedal and had to abandon early on.

Viv Hazelton was both lucky and unlucky all at the same time as she pushed hard to take the vet women's category from Abigail Armstrong - unlucky as their last lap was in the pouring rain, as the lovely sunny weather broke and dumped a load of cold water on the course and the riders, making the going tough and slippery.

SIS/Trek had another successful day at the races with 4 riders taking podium spots, winning both the 75km and the 50km along the way.

In the 75km Wilkinson took the win from teammate Dave Collins in a near repeat of the previous day, as both riders came across the line together. Marin's Billy Joe Whenman was also experiencing a touch of Groundhog Day as he picked up an identical mechanical to that he had suffered the previous day. Fortunately he was able to finish this race and picked up a well earned third.

From the Patterson Training stable, Ruth Mordunt had a real tussle with expert rider Abi Greenaway in the women's 75km race. Despite not looking to concentrate on enduro events Mordunt looked strong as she romped round the 6 laps, opening up a good gap. However a tree/body interface moment saw Mordunt's lead whittle right down. As she regained her composure, Greenaway was bearing down, but Mordunt went on to take the win, leaving Greenaway having to settle for second just 38secs behind. Third went to Faith Addison.

Paul Simmons picked up the win in the 75km vets race: dallying with the elite boys gave him an opening first lap gap which he managed to sustain, leaving the battle for second and third to rage on behind. Dave Frisby and Paul Gibbons, seemed to be having a good little tussle, by lap 4 they'd been joined in the chase by Ed Muir, who was riding a well paced race. Frisby and Gibbons were soon paying for their fast starts and Muir took full advantage pulling away to take second leaving Gibbons to pick up third.

Despite a tough race in the elite field the previous day, Ross Creber seemed to be taking the 50km in his stride as he romped to the win. Team mate Dave Fletcher, having a bad time with the dreaded 'Thetford back' in the XC race, found himself locked in battle with expert rider George Budd, with a final sprint deciding the outcome. Fletcher took second just squeezing Budd into third. As soon as they finished the race Creber and Fletcher were whisked off to start their recovery process ready for a tough World Cup next weekend, this meant they missed their podium, which much to the delight of the crowd they were represented by their team mates Wilkinson and Collins.

Meggie Bichard, riding for new team Ducatti Course Duo, was delighted to take the win in the women's 50km, with Carla Haines taking second and Sara Randle making a rare appearance picking up third.

In the 50km Vets women race Debbie Burton picked up her second win of the weekend, after dominating this race. Jan Holmes took second with Clare Muir third.

It was a real team affair in the vets' 50km as Ben Hayward Cycles team mates Jef Sharp and John McAndrews, finishing 1st and second respectively. It was nearly a non-event for Sharp as a pesky tree stump brought him off big time and he spent a lap chasing down the leaders, which included McAndrews. third went to Lynn Lines coming in ahead of a tight group of four, to take that final spot on the podium.

Kenta Gallagher took his second win of the weekend with a fast two laps in the 25km race. Hugo Humphreys was close behind, but had to settle for second and Max Sykes took third after a close 3 way sprint with mark Sinclair and Grant Ferguson.
The women's race was taken convincingly by Hannah Shenton, with local girl Debra Mallet picking up second ahead of Clare Fothergill in third.

Fortunately only a few unlucky riders - and the plucky marshals - got caught in the deluge that ended the weekend's racing. Perhaps not the best end, but it did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm for the event. As predicted, organisers Paul and Frank did a great job taking on the mantle of the important NPS and the ever popular enduro series. I'm sure we'll see some great racing in the months to come, so make sure you come along either to watch or even better have a go yourself. It's a blast!

Next month the Whyte Enduro series heads for the hills, in the stunning setting of Drumlanrig Castle, the birthplace of the modern bike, a must do pilgrimage for all bike enthusiasts.

Rider Comments

Debbie Burton - 50km vet women: A fantastic weekend, really enjoyable. I started out a bit too quick today but settled down into a rhythm and yeah, really enjoyed it. They'd changed the course a bit and this time it was all ridable - they'd taken out the nasty bit, so that was good. I tagged along with Meggie (Bichard) for a bit then a few of the faster lads came through with a bit of aggression, which wasn't really needed, but yeah overall it was good.

Jef Sharp - 50km Vet men: That was fast out there and I had a bit of an eventful first lap, coming off twice, one pretty nasty when I hit a tree stump at full pelt. I got back on and chased the group back down. I tried to get back up with the lead guys (Wilkes & Collins) but after that crash I couldn't get back up to them. I got back to my team mate John (McAndrews) rode around a few laps with him, then I put the pedal down and got away and got the result. It was a great course really enjoyable and so glad it stayed dry, it's been perfect. It's a shame that with work and family commitments I won't be able to do the whole series, I did it last year and really enjoyed it, I'll try to maybe fit one in if I can.

Meggie Bichard - 50km women: This is my first enduro with my new team, Ducatti Course Duo, I rode in the XC yesterday so I'm pretty knackered, I'm glad I only did the 50km today. It was a fabulous course, undulating and fast, just loads of fun.

Ian Wilkinson - 75km: Yeah a good weekend, but we were lucky really especially on one part, Boothy (Dan Booth) was going really well and could have been a worry, but he wrapped himself round a tree and saved us the trouble of having to shake him off our tail. So that was one down out of 4. Billy was riding well out there too, he's a good little rider, when we went hard and Boothy wrapped himself round the tree, we kept pressing on, with me and Dave going off over the top, Billy was still there. Dave then went off on his own, got a bit of a breather through the back markers. I waited and waited, the hardest bit of the course had to be the drag through the finish, then you hit some of the fire road where you could make some time up, it was no use pressing on in the singletrack as you'd just get held up and lose all the time you made up. I only caught Dave up with 1/2 lap to go, we kept pressing on, as Billy wasn't that far behind, we just rode it to line and it just panned out as it did. We're just trying to figure out how to split a track pump in half now. Yesterday I gave the win to Bibby, although we're pretty equal, someone has to win and someone has to lose, but he's going to be contesting the whole series so I thought it be handy to give him a good start.
20080414_thetford1020080414_thetford8
Dave Collins - 75km: Wilkes and myself just wanted to get a few ks out of the way before we started doing any attacking. Boothy was riding well as was Billy, we thought they might run out of gas a bit so we weren't too worried, not sure what happened to Dan, but Billy was looking really strong all the way round. We started piling on the gas half way round just to get us to the finish quicker, that's all really. It's been a great weekend for the team, it was well set up yesterday for Wilkes and Bibbs, I was hoping to make it a full sweep but I blew a bit on the last lap and missed out on third place. Today it was just a case of getting a few k's in the legs do some training and getting on the podium was just a bonus. It's been a great event the organisers have done a great job.

Paul Simmons - 75km vet: That went really well for me, that's the first time I've done this distance, so I'm chuffed I've won it and come fourth overall. I got off with the quick lads, Collins and Wilkies were in our group and they were pulling away obviously but that helped give me the gap on everyone else in my race and then I just kept a consistent pace. Not bad seeing how my bike is broken! Don't ask me how, I've no idea! I'm looking forward to doing the whole series; I'm really pushing to win the series if I can.

Ruth Mordunt - 75km: I felt really strong today; I knew Abi wasn't far behind chasing hard. On lap 5 I came off my bike and hurt my knee. I just had to sit there for a few minutes while the pain subsided and calm myself down, then I just got on with it and I'm so pleased to get the win, it's fantastic. My only race plan was to win! I've worked really hard on my training and my coach Andy and Jenn have given me so much support and that's really helped.

Paul Ashby - 100km vet: That was an absolute excellent ride I got a bit of hand from elite rider Ryan, but I rode with him nearly all the way and helped him get away from some of his competition and he helped me as well, so we had a brilliant ride. Yeah getting fourth overall and first vet must be good. We did it in 3hr 57mns so that was good and luckily we got in before the rain hit. After racing yesterday I was quite surprised to be going so well today, I actually surprised myself!
20080414_thetford320080414_thetford5
Sally Bigham - 100km women: That was fabulous, really good, the singletrack was great I really enjoyed it, it was a brilliant course. It was really me and Mel (Spath) the whole race and it came down to the last lap, where I had to push on and see what I could do. The course was great and it was good to see it in the daylight, as last time I rode here was Dusk till Dawn. Today was great fun, great competition, brilliant course and yeah really enjoyable and getting in before the rain hit was a bonus!

Duncan Jamieson - 100km winner: I felt great today, yesterday wasn't too good for me I missed the lead group so it was race over after that on a course like this, so I dropped out yesterday after 4 laps to save my legs for today. I'm kinda making marathons my focus this year as well, so I'm trying to qualify for the World Champs in July, so I was up for a good result today. Will and I just got away from the start and took it in turns from there. Will had a few problems out there but I waited for him while he got it sorted, it was proper teamwork out there today. It was great to get the top positions but also we didn't want to be caught by the 75km guys, we thought they may be bearing down on us a bit, so we went out and tried to make our laps consistent, and we managed to more or less match the pace of the 75km boys.

Viv Hazelton - 100km vet women: That was great fun until the last lap, when the rain started and it juts got really muddy and slippy out there. I preferred yesterday's course but I did enjoy it, well apart from the rain!
