Elite Winners: Jenny Copnall, left, won the Women's race - whilst Ian Bibby & Ian Wilkinson crossed the line together in the men's race

And in a small clearing in a wood in Thetford Forest it all began.. again! Hundreds of eager competitors travelled from all corners of the UK and Ireland to contest 21 races ( 22 if you include the Future Stars race) over a day of fast and furious action, utilising a crafty 10km course, incorporating all that Thetford is famous for: slick singletrack weaving relentlessly through hundreds of trees; blasts of fire road; plus a couple of tricky and strength sapping bomb holes that you swooped into and that some jumped out of with a flourish.

Despite being labelled the 'flat one', competitors encountered 233 meters of climbing per lap, which for the Elite riders totalled a respectable 1398 m for the race, not bad when you remember the UCI where asking for a minimum of 230 m per lap for any future Olympic course! We've always said that Thetford is world class and I'm sure the hundreds of riders who lined up on Saturday to have a crack at what this venue does best would agree and, despite the lack of any 'killer' hills, the racing proved to be explosive and seat of the pants stuff throughout the day, with many sprint finishes keeping you on the edge of your seat.

The Youth men's race was tightly contested, as always

It was great to see not only the sun, but also no snow and mud for a change. And so, loads of new - as well as old - faces lined up ready to have a crack at this year's National series.

First win of the day went to newcomer Hugo Robinson in the Juvenile category. He took off at the first corner and didn't look back leaving the rest to fight it out amongst themselves. Orange Monkey Alex Baker took second narrowly ahead of Ryan Fenwick. Another newcomer took the honours in the juvenile girls race, with Beth Crumpton taking the win from the first of the Buick family, Imogen, with Emma Moorhouse just squeezing out Evie Burton for third.

Action from the Juvenile races - above the boys, below the girls

20080412_nps_round_1_thetford_juv_women_550
One of the many changes for the 2008 series was the decision to run most of the women's categories off in the same race, leaving just the master, elite, expert and junior women to battle it out later on. So at 10.30am the women lined up in their respective fields to fight out the podiums, alongside the Youth boys, who went off first.

Along with many faces new to the series, we also had to come to terms with some familiar ones in new categories and new kit: perhaps the most notable change was the absence from the Youth ranks of the dominating duo Michael Butler and Will Verney, who have now moved up to the junior ranks, leaving the podium wide open for the next young stars to start shining through.

This time the honours went to Kenta Gallagher, looking pretty dominant himself and leaving Luke Gray battling it out with Grant Ferguson for second, with Luke just getting the verdict. In the girls' race, Ruby Miller moved easily away, completing her 2 laps in a time that would have seen her win all the other women's categories in that race. Hannah Shenton picked up second.

Veteran winners Mark Chadbourne and Kate Wheeler

Despite a brief tussle with Carol Tilley, Kate Wheeler ultimately made short work of her opposition to take the win in the veteran women's race, with Lynne Coldray taking second ahead of Sara Flatt.

Debbie Burton, shocked to be in Grand vets, spent her race picking off the vet women in front to take her win ahead of Viv Hazelton. While Rachel Fenton and Faith Addison took the win in their respective categories, Sport and Open.

As the day progressed and each race got under way, the organisation took on a near factory look as the races 'rolled' off the production line; as one finished it seemed another one was starting and the trails of Thetford didn't seem to have a moment's peace as riders relentlessly thrashed around looking for that elusive win.

With the morning's races done and dusted, 1pm rolled around and it was the turn of the big boys. Despite not featuring Oli Beckingsale, missing due to other racing commitments, the Elite Men's field certainly didn't lack any depth or talent and it will be interesting to see how the series unfolds as new talent prepares to challenge the 'establishment'. Faces to look out for this year are going to be Dave Fletcher and team-mate Ross Creber as they settle into the longer and faster elite races. It will be intriguing to see when they start snapping at the heels of the older riders.

Billy Joe Whenman is also one to look out for as he just seems to be going from strength to strength at the moment. So this race has a lot of promise for upsets and exciting new talent emerging as the season progresses.

Back to the action and the pace was high from the off, with riders vying for the best position down the first piece of fire road, ready for the start of the singletrack. As a group settled in for the long haul, Ian Wilkinson attacked and took a flyer, with SiS team-mate Ian Bibby soon following and bridging the gap, leaving their third team-mate Dave Collins to police the group, chasing hard behind.

The SiS duo soon opened up a good lead and rode the remaining 5 laps in each others pocket, sharing the load, matching each other for pace and leaving well behind the race for third. As they approached the finish they rode across the line, hands held high in unison, with Bibby being awarded the win.

Dave Collins was trying desperately to make it a 1,2,3 for SiS, but his plans were thwarted by Connor McConvey and Adrian Lansley, who had a nail biting sprint to the finish with McConvey narrowly taking third. Mechanical upsets seemed to be the order of the day for some in the Elite race, with Robin Seymour having to climb off after a puncture and team mate Gareth Montgomery suffering the same fate, but gamely pressed on to take 9th. Most frustratingly, Billy Joe Whenman had to bail after an exploding rear mech' put paid to his race after 3 laps.

The elite women's field was looking as strong as it has in years, and still there were some big hitters missing. So again this is another hot-spot where the racing is just going to get better as the series unfolds. Back in the ranks after a year out was the welcome sight of Sue Clarke. However, it was Jenny Copnall, not one to sit on her laurels and become complacent about her position in elite women's racing, who proved once more to be the strongest rider of the day, opening up a sizeable gap early on and leaving the rest of the field to fight for the minor placings.

Ireland's Spath is chased by Moseley in the Elite Women's race, won by Jenny Copnall, right

That battle behind was pretty close as Jenn O'Connor, Paula Moseley, newcomer to the UK racing scene Mel Spath and Gemma Collins all had ambitions to take the remaining podium spots. In the end Spath showed she had the strength to get away from Moseley to take second, leaving Moseley to claim third.

The Expert men's event was a tight battle between Andrew Barlow, Tim Dunsford and Ben Thomas with only 34 seconds separating the top three spots. Barlow got the win with Dunsford and Thomas sprinting hard for second, with Dunsford getting the verdict.

Sam Gardner enjoys his Masters' race win - Abby Greenaway was the Expert Women winner

Meanwhile, Sam Gardner dominated the masters' race, proving that compression socks must work, or maybe it was down to hard training! In his wake Matt Barrett fought off Graham Warby to pick up second.

In the absence of some of the country's top riders on international racing duties, the Junior Men's racing was none the less exciting as the top four riders Ben Roach, David Nichols, Ross Brinson and Calum Chamberlain fought for the win. In the end it was Ben Roach who gained had the upperhand, taking the win from a fast finishing Nichols, who in turn had to sprint it out with Brinson, narrowly squeezing him into third.

Annie Last was the winner of the Junior Women's event

As expected, Annie Last dominated the junior women's race, with Michelle Bergstrand doing likewise in the masters. In the Expert Women's race Abi Greenaway had a tough battle on her hands with Lilly Matthews and Fran Munday pushing her hard all the way. But she held strong and took the win by 44secs.

Moving onto the mid-afternoon racing and it was time for the vets, grand vets and supper vets, plus the sport and open men to go out on the course. The racing was as fast as ever with none of the 'seasoned' riders giving up easily: these categories just keep on getting faster! In fact Mark Chadbourne who picked up the vets' win, would easily have won the Sports cat too! However that honour went to Naill Frost, who after a 5 year gap in racing exploded from the back of the grid to fight his way to a cracking first spot with a three-way sprint at the finish to decide the outcome. The top five spots were just separated by 17 seconds, it was that close!

Third placed Noel Clough leads eventual Vets' runner-up Paul Ashby

The grand vets was also decided with a sprint as Ray Crosthwaite took the win from Ian Wright, while Phil Buick, took third completing a family podium total of 4 out of 4 for the day. Victor Barnett was the man to beat in the super vets and despite being pushed hard by Sandy Wallace. Dan Oakley was another competitor to try out his sprint finish as he narrowly took the victory in the open race from Serge Hunt.

Juvenile women's race, left, and Elite rider Ross Creber, right

Finally it was the future stars' race and just as they got underway, the weather broke and all that lovely spring sun was replaced by torrents of rain. The plucky youngsters weren't deterred. Again, as seemed to be the theme of the day, this little race was decided by some close sprinting, with Stuart Smith taking the win. Though, to be honest, just by taking part, these youngsters are all winners, as everyone else huddled in the tent shouting encouragement from afar.

Overall, it was a probably the best start to the series you could have hoped for. A healthy showing of riders across the board, were all eager to get stuck in. It'll be interesting to see how the series infolds and the talent emerges. Despite the downpour right at the end of the day, the weather gods did us proud and the atmosphere in the arena was fantastic. The series now moves to Scotland where round two will be fought out in the grounds of the spectacular Drumlanrig Castle, complete with hills! It should be a killer with the promise of lots more intense racing to come!

Post-Race Rider comments:

Alex Baker - second Juvenile: That was a really hard race. I got a good start and Hugo and I were riding together until the first singletrack section, where he got past me. He was riding really powerfully today and I just couldn't stay with him. So every time there was a descent I tried to gain back some time, but there weren't many to do that on. So I was riding with a group vying for position all the time and in the end it was coming down to a sprint finish, but I managed to attack in the last bit of fire road and got away and took second, so I'm pretty happy with that.

Hugo Robinson - juvenile winner: That was a good course really fast and not too technical. I didn't really have a race plan, this is only my second ever MTB race, so I didn't know what to expect. I struck out with Alex (Baker) until the first bit of singletrack, where I got past him and never saw him again.

Ruby Miller - youth girl's winner: It was quite a nice course but just not hilly enough for me. I just went out to ride my own race, just get ahead and ride at my own pace, keep trying all the way through and keep a constant speed. I concentrated on going fast on the bits I knew I could do and then worked hard on the more technical sections. It's a shame there were only two of us out there today, it was a good race but would have been better with a few more girls out there.

Luke Gray - Youth runner up: I set out to try and get away well and pull out into the lead but it was difficult to launch any attacks, as it's so flat here. People just stick to your wheel and it's hard to shake them. The start was very quick and Kenta got away into the singletrack first. I was doing a lot of work to bridge back over to him, but he was really strong today. Still I'm pleased with my result, it's a good start to the season and to get on the podium was my aim. Next time I'll be aiming for the top step.

Bethany Crumpton - juvenile girls' winner: That was my first race and I was really stunned to do so well, I just wasn't expecting that. I set out to see how I'd get on against the other girls.I rode my best and to my surprise came home with a really good result.

Kate Wheeler - Vet women's winner: A great start to my season, yeah I'm pleased with that. It was an excellent course; it flowed so well and was great to race round, superb. It was good to have so many of the girls' categories going off around the same time, though it would have been even better if all the women's categories could be set off in the same race, rather than split them like they did.

Kenta Gallagher - Youth winner: I was quite surprised how well I did today, considering how much training I've done over the winter, which wasn't a great deal really. I was preparing to race myself into the series. I did the first SXC race last weekend and didn't think I'd picked up any form, but I did get a good result so I came here feeling a bit confident. Not overly so, as this is the first event and you never know how the other riders are going until you get stuck in. I'm glad that Will(Verney) and Michael(Butler) have moved up, but I knew I still had stiff competition, with Luke (Gray). He was obviously close to me on the first lap. I just went out there and rode my best, to see what would happen, as it's the first race it's not too important, but it went really well for me despite it not being my type of course. This is so flat and I'm used to the hills back in Scotland. Having said that I really enjoyed the course, it was loads better than last year, really fast and very enjoyable. I waited for the first couple of corners before I made my move, but I wanted to be first into the singletrack so attacked there and got away.

Debbie Burton - Grand Vet women winner: Yeah that was a good race. We set off after the vet ladies so I had those to chase down. I think I just about managed to chase them all down, except for Kate (Wheeler). It was the usual bumpy course and drier than in practise so that was good. There were a few nasty bombholes that we had to get out of but it was good. It was good that most of the ladies' categories were in the same race, but it would have been good to have the masters start with us as well but they're off with the Elites. It also a shame that I couldn't see Evie's race finish and she couldn't see my start, but you can't please all of us all the time can you.

Michelle Bergstrand - master women winner: That was a good hard race on one of those courses that's just continuous. There's no place for recovery and you seem to be at your max all the way round. I was pushed quite hard by Ruth (Mordant) to begin with but I managed to shake her. This win is for my uncle Roy who passed away quite suddenly on Wednesday. That happening just makes you realise why you come to these events, you come to enjoy it and get the best out of the day and we're lucky to be able to do it oh and a win is always a bonus.

Sam Gardner - master winner: I'm really really pleased with that win, my first mountain bike race of the year. I've been training really hard for the last couple of months and this last week I've rested loads and to get the win is just fantastic. I had a little inkling that it was going to be a good one today so I'm really chuffed with that. I just wanted to get a good start and get away in a group. This race here always turns into a bit of a road race, so I tucked into a group and stayed with them for the first 2 laps and then I was on the front when we caught up with a bit of traffic. Luckily I managed to get away, looked back and saw that no one else had come with me so I put my head down and started to make a bit of a gap on the chasers. It was interesting going off with the elites and experts, but I did have a lot of riders to pass. Maybe next round they'll put the women off behind us instead of in front as we did catch them fairly quickly. It made for a tactical race, but it would be horrible to lose a race because of back markers. I hope the guys I was racing with don't think they lost the race because of that. I'm not sure if I can commit to the whole series as off road triathlons are my main aim still and Round 2 I'm supposed to be racing in France. So I'll do all the ones I can that don't clash but I'll definitely be around in July to defend my National jersey.

Ian Bibby - Elite winner: There was some pretty good team work out there today, it wasn't planned, but it was textbook. We were just cruising down the singletrack when someone went off quite hard and then eased off, so Wilkes (Ian Wilkinson) just went over the top and got gap. Me and Dave weren't going to chase him down, so we let him get up the road, then the group eased up again, so I attacked and went off and got across to Wilkes. Dave stayed in the group and we just rode off. We went really, really hard for the next lap and made a good gap and then just cruised it and rode into the finish together. We spoke to each other on the last lap, about what we wanted to do, we knew we were both pretty equal on strength, we both had a few digs and couldn't get rid of either of us so we decided to just roll over together. I hadn't realised they'd given me the win, that's alright then, that's the first time I'll beat Wilkes in a sprint!

Jenny Copnall - Elite Women winner: This win means quite a lot to me, I've probably had the worst 3 weeks in my cycling career I reckon. I've not been well and when I should have been doing my top end stuff, the icing on the cake, I've not been able to do anything. So I felt so unprepared for today. I rode round yesterday and my heart rate was way high so I was just worried about my health if nothing else. So I must admit I came into this race with pretty low confidence, I decided the only thing I could do was just rely on my bike handling skills. So I was railing round the corners and I was on my lucky bike, my '06 bike, the one I've won every thing on, my new bikes have only just come through so I didn't want to rush them out. Even after 15 years of being at the top, you still come into each season the same as any other. These days I have less confidence coming into races as I respect the other girls I race against and you know I didn't win any NPS races last year, just the main one - we have so many good riders now swelling the elite ranks it's brilliant. There's a few people missing, like Kate Potter and Amy Hunt, but on the other hand Sue's back. I haven't had a year off racing so I don't know what happens but I've no doubt that Sue will soon be back on my wheel giving me a hard time. It's really great to have her back racing . It's fab to see that we've had the biggest Elite women's field for many years. I would have liked to have seen all the women's categories going at 10am. For the development of women's racing personally I think that would be better. Yes it's a bit away from being in the prime spot, but it would be better for all involved.

Dave Lawton - Junior: That was a hard race, I led for the first bit of fire road, but I just went out too hard I just wish now I'd stayed behind in the top 5 and got pulled along. It was great to get stuck back into this type of racing, it's a lot faster with a lot more riders. It was good being mixed up with the elites and the experts, I want to ride experts when I go up from juniors so it was interesting to be in amongst them in the race. It was a great course, fast and hard, there's no where to rest, your cruising it on the singletrack , but when you hit the fire track you just have to put the power down to get in front of everyone so its hard. Really looking forward to Drumlanrig and Grizedale they should be awesome.

Phil Buick - Grand Vet: I thought my race went off comfortably but soon realised it wasn't - it was going like the clappers. On the first bit of uphill singletrack we caught up with the tail end of the Vets race, the RAF seemed to have run out of fuel going up there and it all got a bit chaotic so it split up a bit. I had to ease off a stroke or two just to get my breath back a bit, then I settled down pulled a few back and bagged third. It doesn't get any easier the older you get, it's still quick out there.

George Budd - Expert: It was a really close race in the expert some chap riding for Marin went off really fast, so we didn't see him for ages so he rode the whole race on his own. Then Chris Minter in elite got a puncture and caught us up and when he came past us Tim Dunford and Ben Thomas went with him. As I was breathing out of my behind at that time I didn't. So they got away and Tim got second. I rode the race with Chris Andrews and we were chatting coming up the last fire road about when we would start sprinting then someone shouted that we should stop chatting and start racing so we started sprinting and he beat me. It was good fun, I really really enjoyed it. It's so nice not to have to race in really nasty horrible mud. It was also good to put pressure on the pedals and the bike go forward and not slip sideways.

Anna Buick - junior women: I'm so pleased with my sister Imogene in her first race this morning; she was so made up with her second in the juvenile race. Then Mum got a third in a great race, as I did in my race and then Dad saw us all make it to the podium, so that was fantastic. Racing against Annie was good, though to be honest she's in a league of her own out there. I knew that she would be a whole lot faster, she lives and trains as a full time cyclist where I merely go out for a ride on a Sunday for a couple of hours. The course was riding really well, you did have to be strong I felt okay; strong enough to get the pedals round and make it so it wasn't a real slog.

Dan Oakley - Open men's winner: That was great it went off so fast. I managed to crash about three-quarters of the way through the first lap, which saw me lose loads of places and dent my confidence too. By lap 2 and 3 I'd lost a lot of momentum and thought I was out there on my own. But right at the end the second placed guy turned up and gave me a fright and we ended up sprinting for the finish. So I've learnt from that never slow down!

Naill Frost - Sports men winner: That was fun. It wasn't too close a race to begin with as I started out in 40th spot on the grid, so it took me a while to work my through but got up to the leaders on the second lap and just sat there. I knew it would come down to a sprint. It was great. My first season back racing after a break of 5 years and to get the win was a bit of a shock, but I'm not complaining!

Victor Barnett - Super Vet: I didn't plan to get away quite as early as I did, but that's the way things go. I got away just after the bomb hole and just kept putting the pressure down and yeah had a good ride.
