Peat & Atherton Take Ae By Storm

The UK Downhill fraternity gathered at Ae Forest in the Scottish borders at the weekend for the first round of the 2005 National Series. They took on one of the nation's best known hills, which has seen some work in recent months and although chilly, the weekend was mainly dry and the course in excellent condition. Dave Mogan's organising team did their usual slick job and apart from a brief uplift glitch on Sunday morning, everything went very much to plan and on time.

As for the racing itself, world number one, Steve Peat (right), began the National season in convincing form, with a four and a half second win from Gee Atherton. Peat was also fastest in qualifying and looked smooth on a tricky but not too daunting course. Rachel Atherton laid down a marker for the new season with a convincing win in the Elite Women's category, with a four second win from Helen Gaskell, with Maria Conway taking third from an out of sorts Tracey Moseley, who had problems in her run and trailed in over twenty seconds down.

However, ride of the day came from Junior, Brendan Fairclough, who recorded a superb time of 2:16.735, the third fastest on the day, putting many of the country's biggest names behind him in the process. And it was no fluke, as Fairclough had qualified fifth fastest on the Saturday.

Qualifying proved to be a good guide to race day form, with Steve Peat quickest by some six seconds, recording 2:11.619 with Gee Atherton, Will Longden, Dan Atherton and Marc Beaumont all slotting in behind him in exactly the same order they finished in on race day.

Rachel Atherton (below right) was the quickest Elite Woman in qualifying, but only had a second to spare over Tracy Moseley and Helen Gaskill. Atherton then really turned on the style on race day, quickening by some ten seconds, wich none of her rivals could match. If she stays injury free - and she looked keen and very focussed throughout the weekend - Rachel could well make a big impact on the world Cup scene this year.

In the other categories, John Robson took the experts by less than a tenth of a second from gary Forrest, with Lee Bartram less then a second down in third. Impressive though Brendan Fairclough was in taking the Junior category, he was less than four seconds clear of runner up (and ninth fastest overall) Ben Cathro.

Former Elite series winner Tim Ponting was victorious in the Master category, three seconds clear of Paul French, with Paul May third. Jerry Twigg had a comfortable 13 second marginin winning the Veterans' category, with former world champion Alan Blood second, despite a big crash at the 8 foot drop-off, which was the main feature of the final woodland section of the course.

In the Youth men category, there was an especially tight finish, with the top four all finishing within two seconds of each other - Chris Hutchens won by three thousandths of a second, barely the width of a tyre, with Josh Bryceland third. Danny Hart had more breathing space in winning the Juvenile class from Gareth Brewin.

The other category winners were Phil Roberts (Men Open), Mark Tattersall (Men novice) and Fergus Lamb (Men Senior).
