Racing cyclist hit by lorry is compensated for spinal injury
17th February 2005
Racing cyclist Adrian Feek (pictured) has recovered a substantial six figure sum for spinal injuries sustained as he was taking part in a Road Times Trial Council (RTTC) time trial in July 2001.
Adrian is a member of British Cycling and has been a dedicated competitor for 19 years. He was hit with significant force by a Leyland lorry on the A1 road near Little Paxton in Cambridgeshire. He was taken by air ambulance to Addenbrooke’s hospital in Cambridge. The driver of the lorry was uninjured. His insurers admitted liability and a settlement was achieved amicably.
"If there is one bit of information that I would pass on to fellow cyclists who have been injured during an accident, it would be to tell them that litigation is a long, drawn out process, that at times can be very frustrating," says Adrian. "My only advice would be for them to solely concentrate on recovery and their injuries the best they can and leave the litigation to Sue Bence*. It is her vocation and she has seen and dealt with many cases before yours, so don’t let your injuries and frustration cloud your judgement. Leave the rest to Sue, she knows what she is doing. Concentrate on your recovery, focus, not on what you were like before your accident, but the day after. Always look at recovery retrospectively, from the initial pain felt the day of the accident to the say after and the day after that, and so on. It will improve if you remain both positive and patient. As with all things, nothing remains the same."
