Cardiff’s Katie Curtis was a surprise selection after having missed the Manchester World Track Cup in Manchester due to a fall whilst racing at Newport in February. Talking about the moment when she had the phone call, 18 year old Katie says “I was so shocked to be selected! When I got the call from Dan saying that I had been asked to ride, I was speechless I was so excited.”

After the fall at Newport where she crashed heavily and had to have five days off riding her bike, Katie got back into training mode as she didn’t expect to be doing the World Track Championships. “Once I got over the crash, I started getting in some miles and so managed to increase my fitness before this selection which is good and has  come in handy.”

“When I got the call though, I was just about to start doing some strength work and Dan told me to stop and work on my speed for the worlds. So I started training with the group on Sunday and will be doing double sessions on the track most days. Because I am doing the Scratch race, the training is all about short and fast efforts, one kick instead of multiples which I’d do for the Points”.

“The Scratch race is about position so if you have a good sprint and can get in position, then you stand a good chance.” Katie though hasn’t raced against the senior women at all but isn’t fazed saying “we have last years Worlds on DVD so I’m having a browse and seeing who is who!” Good luck Katie!
