MBE For Dave Brailsford

15 June 2005
British Cycling's Performance Director, David Brailsford, has received an MBE in the 2005 Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Dave is Performance Director of British Cycling's GB Cycling Team and he led them through the successful Athens Olympics campaign, where the team picked up four medals, two of them gold. More recently, in March, the team enjoyed its most successful World Track Championships in Los Angeles, where four more gold medals were won.

Responding to the news, Dave said "I am delighted and humbled to have received this honour. I say humbled because I feel that I am receiving it on behalf of the whole team: we have a remarkable team of support staff and a truly world-class squad of riders and I hope that they will all feel that they have contributed to this honour and that it reflects what they have achieved for this country in recent years."

British Cycling's Chief Executive Peter King said "it has been a privilege for me to have worked with Dave and it is wonderful news to see his achievements being recognised in this high profile and important way. I am confident that Dave and his team will bring back many more medals in the coming years."

Brian Cookson, British Cycling President said: "I am delighted for Dave and join in offering him my congratulations on this well-deserved honour. Dave's progress and achievements since joining us a few years ago have been remarkable. His enthusiasm and professionalism, combined with his love for our sport and commitment to his job, are second to none, and I have every confidence that he will achieve even more in his role with us in the future".

David Brailsford spent four years as a competitive cyclist in France before returning to the UK to study for his first degree in Sports Science. He subsequently went on to study for an MBA at Sheffield business school. He has been involved in cycling throughout his career and was first employed by GB Team as a consultant following the advent of lottery funding. He then moved on to become Programmes Director before becoming Performance Director. He brings to the role a blend of sporting knowledge and business acumen, which he has utilised to lead and develop the team into one of the most respected and successful Olympic Programmes across all sports.
