The 2008 Mountain Bike World Championships are based in Val di Sole, Italy. They bring together the world's best Cross-Country, Downhill, Trials and 4-Cross riders for five days of intense competition as the most coveted titles in the sport go up for grabs. We've got pictures, reports and results from all the events, brought to us by Rob Jones.
| Day 6: Capping off a superb World Championships, the last day saw GB take two top ten positions in the Elite Mens XC - 4th for GB's Liam Killeen and 10th for Oli Beckingsale in the Elite Mens final, which was won by Switzerland's Christoph Sauser, with Florian Vogel taking second ahead of Ralf Naef, making it a Swiss 1-2-3. The Womens XC final was won by Spain's Margarita Fullana, with Germany's Sabine Spitz in second, followed by Irina Kalentieva in third. Top GBR finisher was Fiona Macdermid in 54th position. | Day 5: Gold and Silver for Gee Atherton and Steve Peat in the Elite Mens, Gold for Rachel Atherton in the Elite Womens, plus Gold and Silver in the Junior Mens with Josh Bryceland leading home his countryman Sam Dale. | Day 4: Nino Schurter ended the Swiss drought of three days at the Mountain Bike World Championships in Val di Sole, Italy by regaining the Under-23 men's title he relinquished last year to Jakob Fuglsang of Denmark. | Day 3: Peter Sagan of Slovakia who has major titles and medals to his credit in Mountain Biking, Road and Cyclo-Cross once again showed his talent with a fine victory which has given his the Junior Mountain Bike World title. Obviously, this is one talented rider. Sagan went to the front of the huge 102 rider field at the base of the first climb and bossed the race from there. Hamish Creber was the best Brit. Meanwhile, in Downhill qualifying there was an Atherton family double, with Gee and Rachel topping their respective categories. Junior Men Cross-Country Report & Images |
| Day 2: The first full day of competition at the Mountain Bike World Championships saw a strong performance by the lone British rider - Annie Last, who finished ninth in the Junior Women's cross-country. In the Junior race, Laura Abril won Colombia's first ever world title in mountain bike with a start to finish ride from the front, while Tanja Zakelj of Slovakia was an unexpected winner over favoured Nathalie Schneitter of Switzerland in the woman's U23 category. | Day 1: France, a perennial runner up in the Team Relay, finally captured the world title to open the 2008 Mountain Bike world Championships in Val di Sole, Italy. Defending champions Switzerland, in a dramatic finish, caught host Italy less than 500 metres from the finish line to take silver. Great Britain had an extremely solid ride from Liam Killeen, who recorded the fastest lap of the day at 19:32, and the squad finished 14th overall. Team Relay Cross-Country: Report & Images |
