UCI Track World Cup (Beijing)
Day 3, December 9, 2007; China
Men's Sprint
With four riders in the competition including the World Championship Silver medallist from 2006, Craig MacLean, Britain went into this competition with a strong line up. In qualifying, there were four Brits in the first 15 out of the 62 starters and of those, four were in the top 10 lead by Chris Hoy (5th).
Onto the 1/8th final and all the Brits went through except for Matt Crampton who was beaten by up and coming French sprinter, Kevin Sireau. Hoy beat Dutch rider Tim Veldt, Craig MacLean the European champion Gregory Bauge and Ross Edgar the Olympic Champion Ryan Bayley.
The quarter finals however saw the Brits come undone at the seams with all of the them being beaten. Ross Edgar was beaten two rides to one by German Stefan Nimke after Edgar was relegated in the first ride. Hoy went out to Mickael Bourgain of France two nil and Craig MacLean two nil to Kevin Sireau. The end result was out of the four riders in the minor final, three were Brits and it was no surprise they finished 5, 6 and 7th providing the team with many valuable points in the sprint competition for Olympic qualification.

Silver Medal!

After a shaky start in Sydney with Mark Cavendish still getting over illness and a break after a long road season, the British pairing showed they mean business in Beijing with a great ride to finish second behind the French pair.
Three teams gained a lap, the French, Ukraine and British pairing of Wiggins and Cavendish and only a point gained in the first sprint by the French team, clinched the Gold for France whilst neither the British or the Ukraine team scored any points from the mid race sprints and it was the only the higher finish by the Brits – eighth -- that gave them the silver medal ahead of the Ukraines who crossed the line in 12th after a mad scramble for the line.

It was a cruel way to end the competition for Victoria Pendleton who was all ready to win the Gold when a crash took out all but one rider and left Victoria on the deck with what is expected to be nothing more than bruises and splinters from the board track. In the minor final, up and coming Anna Blyth won the race for the line to end the competition in 7th place.
