UCI World Track Cup, Sydney

December 1, 2007 -- Day 2

After no medals on the first night, the Brits stepped up a gear on day two, winning Gold in the Team Pursuit whilst in the final of the Keirin it got even better with a GB 1-2 as World Champion Chris Hoy showed he’s boss winning ahead of Ross Edgar riding in the black of  SiS.

Team Pursuit
Gold! With two of the four riders in the Great Britain team being part of the World Championship winning team from 2007 and Steve Cummings and Chris Newton part of the Silver medal winning team at the Athens Olympics, this was a strong line up taking the line in Sydney. In the final against New Zealand, the British team of Ed Clancy, Bradley Wiggins, Chris Newton and Steve Cummings produced a stunning 4.01 to improve on their qualifying time by three seconds to beat the Kiwis by four seconds.

Speaking to Cyclingnews.com after the qualifying round, Great Britain's Performance Director Dave Brailsford said "we are not 100% prepared - Chris Newton just got off the plane and its his first team pursuit for a couple of years. Bradley (Wiggins) just got off the plane as well. It's the first time that the lads have ridden together and haven't actually trained together at all. We are pleased to qualify fastest, that was the aim, it was achieved, so we will just build on that for the final," Britain's high performance manager, Dave Brailsford said of the ride.

In their qualifying round, the British quartet started fastest with a 1.04 kilometre and continued to hold that lead through out the 4,000 metres despite their second and third kilometres being third and second fastest respectively. Their final kilometre of under a minute showed just what experts they are at pace management.

MENS KEIRIN
World Champion Chris Hoy kicked off his World Track Cup in the Men's Keirin in style winning his first round heat ahead for France's impressive Gregory Bauge whilst World Championship Bronze medallist Ross Edgar, riding for Science in Sport, won his heat as well ensuring that there were two Brits in the second round.

There was more success in the second round as Chris Hoy again beat Bauge to win his heat whilst Ross Edgar scraped in by finishing third in his heat -- two Brits in the final just like the final for the World Championship in 2007. The result in Sydney though eclipsed that in Majorca as both Hoy and Edgar beat multi world champion Theo Bos to make it a 1-2 for GB after a 1-3 in Majorca. Hoy was quite simply on fire and with Edgar not far away, it was a brilliant result for the Sprint team.
