UCI World Track Cup, Sydney
Nov 30 to Dec 2, 2007
The Winter season of UCI World Track Cups started in Sydney and the Great Britain Cycling Team sent a strong team to begin the qualification process for the World Championships in Manchester (Track) and also the Beijing Olympics in 2008. After three gold medals, two for the Great Britain Team and one for the SiS pro team, Great Britain finished the competition in 4th whilst Science in Sport were 11th in the rankings for teams.
Day 1, November 30
It was a low key start by Great Britain standards on day 1 of the Sydney round of the UCI World Track Cup. In the Women’s Pursuit, Wendy Houvenaghel was GB’s top finisher in fourth place whilst in the Team Sprint, the Great Britain trio of Jason Kenny, Mat Crampton and Chris Hoy also lost their bronze medal ride off to finish fourth in that event.
In the Men’s Pursuit, Steve Cummings made a good return to the track with fifth place while in the Men’s Points race, Chris Newton started his Olympic Challenge with sixth place in the final. It was a disappointing Women’s Sprint event for Victoria Pendleton with eight place and in the Women’s Scratch, riding for Scotland, Kate Cullen finished 11th.
Day 2, December 1
After no medals on the first night, the Brits stepped up a gear on day two, winning Gold in the Team Pursuit whilst in the final of the Keirin it got even better with a GB 1-2 as current double World Champion Chris Hoy showed he’s boss winning ahead of Ross Edgar riding in the black of SiS.
Day 3, December 2
There was a Golden feeling to the end of the World Track Cup in Sydney as triple World Champion, Victoria Pendleton, sealed a glorious end to the three day competition winning Gold in the Women’s Keirin whilst Anna Blyth was 10th. There was also a Bronze for Chris Hoy in the Men’s Sprint whilst in the Madison, Wiggins & Cavendish were 13th and Swift & Bellis 16th.
