2007 UCI World Road Championships

 

September 26-30, 2007; Stuttgart, Germany

 

After 16 years, the Road World Championships are returning to Stuttgart, the European Capital of Sport 2007. British Cycling is with the Great Britain team and will be presenting reports and pictures from the event in Germany.

Feature #2: Training Day -- World Championship Road Races (September 28)

 

20070928_Road_Worlds_Trainingd2_60With the Time Trials over and the Road Races to come on the weekend, today here in Stuttgart, Friday, was spent training on the course as most of the riders in the Great Britain Cycling Team had some time on the race circuit to prepare for the road races on the weekend. British Cycling travelled with the team, talked to the riders and was there to capture of the atmosphere of the event.

Wednesday, 26 Sept, Time Trial (U23 & Women)

 

20070926_Road_Worlds_D1_TT_Pooley_60Great Britain went into the opening day of the Time Trials wanting one of its girls to finish in the top 10 and Emma Pooley, who has shown great form on the climbs in Italy, showed the course was to her liking with an 8th placing, less than a minute off a medal.

Thursday, 27 Sept, Time Trial, Elite Men


20070927_Road_Worlds_Day2TT_60On a cold and wet day in Stuttgart, Great Britain riders David Millar and Bradley Wiggins finished 18th and 10th respectively in the final time trial event of the 2007 World Road Championships. Wiggins tenth place meant it was job done for the riders as they both knew the team were looking for a top 15 to guarantee at least one Nation place in the Olympic Time Trial.

Saturday, 29 Sept, Road Race (Elite Women & U23)


20070929_Road_Worlds_Day1RR_60In a sensational result for the Great Britain Cycling Team’s Olympic Academy, Isle of Man rider Jonny Bellis won the bronze medal in the Under 23 Road Race. In a sprint finish, the European champion on the track showed at 19 – a first year senior – what an exciting prospect he is on the road. It was a great day for Emma Pooley as well when she finished 10th in the Elite Women’s World Championship.

Sunday, 30 Sept, Road Race, Elite Men

 

20070930_Road_Worlds_Elite_Men_60Defending World Road Race Champion, Paolo Bettini of Italy who is also the reigning Olympic champion, won his second rainbow jersey in a row when he outsprinted surprise contender Alexandr Kolobnev of Russia and local rider Stefan Schumacher of Germany after almost seven hours of racing under a hot sun. David Millar of Britain was 54th and only a lack of racing in his legs after his recent crash stopped him from being a contender at the end.
