Junior Women's Keirin
You could tell from the moment Jess Varnish came into the Championships she has talent written all over her. Fastest over 200 metres and then a medal in the 500TT, it was only a matter of time before she showed the rest just how really fast she is and today was that day! Two rounds of the Junior Women’s Kierin were ridden and she won both, winning the jersey she was so hungry for. The other GB rider in the competition, Dani King, was 12th overall.
Reactions:
Jess Varnish (Gold, Silver and 4th): “I was really up for this event. I have learnt so much from the sprint and was just going to go out there and go for it. The race went perfect for me. I was on this girls wheel who won the Sprint and she just took me round the track and I came round her at the end. I think the others were watching me as well because they know what times I have done. I felt good on the gear I had this morning so there were no changes.”
Jess admits a lot of the experience she has for the event comes from coach led racing although it doesn’t involve girls as good as those she was up against in that final. So although it was a little bit of an unknown, the experience of having done the Sprint first, came in useful. As for the future, she admits “I want to follow in Victoria’s (Pendleton) footsteps because she is amazing and done everything.”

That jersey Jess has been hungry for all week is hers!
A split second after this photo was taken, the Italian went down hard. Dani King stayed upright and was 5th in the race and 12th overall.
Round 1
Dani King was out muscled in very physical heat 1 of the Junior Women's Keirin and finished 6th and was relegated to riding the repechage. In Heat 2, jessica Varish showed no let up in her hunger for a jersey as she won her heat with a confident display. In her repecharge, Dani King gave it her all but was denied a place in the finals when she was beaten to the line, finishing second and in the final for places 7-13.
Jess Varnish is through to the final of the of Junior Women's Keirin.
Dani King goes the long way round in her heat but was unable to make the top two which went through to the final.
... and in the repechage, Dani goes close to winning but not close enough and is in the 7-13 final.
