Junior Men's Scratch Race
Final
Wearing his rainbow stripes, Peter Kennaugh has a Silver medal to go with the two Gold he has won at this years championships.
The current World champion, Peter Kennaugh, went into the race as a favourite and the glimpses of brilliance he showed in the heat were saved until the end, when he first closed a break down and then when a Dutchmen, Michael Vingerling (Holland) attacked and no-one chased, Peter Kennaugh knew it was down to him and despite towing the field around on his wheel, he was still able to hold them all off to finish a disappointed second making it two Gold and a Silver so far. Mark McNally was 20th after a promising start when he made it into two breaks.
Peter Kennaugh: “The race was a bit twitchy at the start and halfway through the race I thought this race is mine. When the Dutchy attacked, I was looking for Macca with about three laps to go for a leadout but couldn’t see him so I thought I’m going to have to sort myself out. So I attacked with two and a half to go and thought if I catch him I have a chance of winning, if I don’t the Gold is out the window, so I gambled and went. I was closing on him but he had just that bit too much of a lead.”
“When I went, I thought there was a chance I could get swamped by those on my wheel but when I got up to speed, I felt confident. It is all those team pursuit efforts where you know you can bang out a lap and a half without slowing down, squeezing it out like in a team pursuit. I did just that and managed to get Silver.”
“Can’t win them all!”
The Dutchman who made a late break for freedom three laps out holds on whilst Peter wins the drag race for the line.
World Champion giving it full gas!
Heats
In the first heat, Mark McNally rode a positive race, focusing on making sure he was in the right moves and when he did, doing enough to gain the lap and ensure qualification without going into the red. Oh, and he won it! In the second heat, Peter Kennaugh got to give his rainbow stripes an airing on a special Pinarello bike which also sported the rainbow colours. Like McNally, Kennaugh was keeping his eye on dangerous moves and although the breaks he got in never stuck, in the final sprint he showed the rest he had plenty in the tank despite two Team Pursuit Gold medals already this week.
Mark McNally gets in a break that gains a lap and secures a position in the final.
Peter Kennaugh wins the bunch gallop to make sure of his place in the final.
