Men's Scratch Race

Report

Final: Hong Kong took their first ever senior world title as Kam Po Wong produced a well-timed late attack to get clear of the field and hold on to the line. The race had been surprisingly inert as the riders all marked each other to the point of stalemate and it all appeared to be coming down to a bunch gallop when the winner pulled a great move.

A big crash in the bunch helped his cause, sidelining a couple of the pre-race favourites, including Greg Henderson of New Zealand and Swiss rider Franco Marvulli. Jonny Bellis rode a good race but tailed off in the closing stages to finish 14th - he's had a busy start to his senior World Championships career and will doubtless have learnt a lot from the experience.

Jonny Bellis got in a break with six day rider Roland Garber but because the pace of the race was quite tame, the chase was never going to break the race wide open and in the end it was an 'unknown' who jumped clear while the stars of the race watched him. Jonny however impressed considering his tough day the day before and like Ed Clancy and Geraint Thomas, I am sure we will hear a lot more from this gutsy rider.

Morning Session: Despite a long day in the mens Omnium the previous day, GB's Jonny Bellis qualified comfortably for the final of the Scratch Race after finishing fourth in the first heat.

Jonny was quick at chasing down dangerous moves during the race.

... and has the legs at the end to stay near the front for the final sprint with two riders up the track.
