Men's Keirin
Report
Team effort: Chris Hoy, Iain Dyer, Scott Gardner, Jan van Eijden and Ross Edgar.
Finals: Chris Hoy proved that he's more than just an against the clock specialist by winning the World Keirin title in commanding fashion. Using his muscular style to grab the wheel of the pacing derny, he simply proved too quick for the opposition in his second round heat. Ross Edgar followed him into the final, also winning his heat, though in contrasting style - coming from stone last and passing the whole field in the last lap.
In the final Hoy again grabbed the front, almost lost it to Perkins of Australia as the derny swung off, regained it and then lost it again as Bourgain of France came over him. However, Chris didn't panic but slipped in behind Bourgain and then came again on the last lap, grabbing the front and holding off defending champion Theo Bos to claim the title. Ross Edgar appeared out of it, but again turned in a fine last lap and he slipped under the rest of the field to claim bronze behind Bos, who took the silver.
Hoy has very quickly adapted to the demands of this dangerous and unpredictable discipline, using his size and kilo speed to great effect. Edgar too looks to be finally fulfilling his potential and his second Worlds medal in 24 hours was great news for the talented young rider.
After Chris Hoy got the back wheel of the derny, the Brits were able to play musical places to get Chris and Ross 1-2 behind the Derny ...
Mickeal Bourgain threw a spanner in the wheels of the Brits though by gaining the front but his speed opened up gaps and Hoy, far from getting boxed in, slotted in on the wheel of the Frenchman ....
And then Chris made his move on the final bend and how Ross got out of that box I'll never know!
Ross Edgar: “I’m delighted with this bronze medal. Really happy. I have been performing well throughout the competition but it was a bumpy ride to the finish though. I am glad the team gave me the opportunity to do it.”
Chris Hoy: “This is a new event to me and I have done well at it this year but I didn’t really expect to win today. A medal was an outside chance and this is way beyond my expectations. Its incredible.”
Team tactics? “We didn’t want to ride in a team style because you can’t split a medal and it wasn’t fare for one person to sacrifice himself for another so we rode for ourselves but obviously it was to both our advantages to be together. The Dutch had two riders and it was always going to be a battle. The way Ross was going in training and the competition so far, it could have gone his way too. You could rerun that Keirin and get a different result but I am just glad it went my way.”
“This week as shown that Theo is not invincible and its great to get a chink in his armour on the way to Beijing but we know he’s not finished because he is an amazing competitor. It was nice to beat him to the title though.”
New event for Chris after the axing of the Kilo? “The main focus will be the Team Sprint because it is a more controllable event and there is not so many variables but you never say never and this is an event that if you make the final, anything can happen as I just showed there.”

Qualifying: Chris Hoy and Ross Edgar both made it through to second round of the Keirin. Hoy won the fourth heat when he lead from the front and only Tuen Mulder of Holland got close to his. Ross Edgar meanwhile, had to come through the Repechage, where he won his heat with ease.
Ross Edgar leads out from two laps but was swamped in the rush to the line (below).
Chris Hoy goes from the outside straight to the back of the derny.
Hoy wins round 1 heat from Mulder.
Plenty of family support for Hoy in the stands.
Theo Bos has to also come back though the repecharges.
Ross Edgar wins his repecharge with ease.
