20070329_TR_WORLDS_D1_wiggins_100Report: Day 1 Track Worlds Brad Wiggins got things moving by winning GB's first medal of the championships, a gold, in the Individual Pursuit final. No sooner had the dust settled from this fabulous ride than Reade and Pendleton were blowing away the Dutch world cup winners to claim the Women's Team Sprint Title.

She never looked in any trouble against Guo in the final and took her second title in the discipline, following on from her 2005 success.

In the men's event, Craig MacLean went through to the Semi-Finals. Shanaze Reade enjoyed an impressive debut in the 500m Time Trial, an event which also saw a new World Record. Juan Llanares took a fourth Points Race title in front of an ecstatic crowd.

Day 4 (April 1) - Men: | Sprint | Kilo | Madison | Women: Keirin | Points Race

20070322_TR_Worlds_Hoy_100Report Day 4 Track Worlds Victoria Pendleton won her third title of the championships with victory in the Keirin. Interview -- UK Sport's Emyr Roberts

Talking to Emyr Roberts, head of Performances Services for UK Sport, he had this to say about being in Palma to witness this great performance “it has been an awesome performance from the team here in Palma, the best ever Worlds for them. From a UK Sport point of view, it has been a privilege  to be here as part of the team. As a return on lottery investment, then cycling is really setting the pace among the Olympic sports and shows how well placed this program is at as we look ahead to Beijing next year which is the big one from our point of view.”

“At this point in time, Cycling is probably looking at being our number 1 sport going into Beijing having achieved so much success here in all discipline, sprint, endurance, men and women. So it has been a great performance by the British team, led by Dave Brailsford with great support from the coaches, mechanics, masseurs and everybody else contributing and is a model for other sports to look at in terms of what can be achieved with lottery funding.”

“UK Sport funding, we have committed a resource to the World Class Cycling programme through to March 2009 and that funding not only covers these top athletes you see here competing here in Palma, but also the athletes we’re supporting with 2012 in mind. We support the whole World Class programme which is athletes who have medal potential at World and Olympic potential over the next eight years. The cream of the crop have been delivering the goods here in Majorca but it is also great to see the youngsters coming through like Geraint Thomas, Anna Blyth, Ed Clancy, Jonny Bellis and Shanaze Reade and there are more of those in the pipeline.”

“Cycling has done a great job in the last few years and we’re optimistic there is more success to come.”

“Whilst Lottery funding goes into the World Class programme, but we also support lottery funding to encourage major events to come to Britain and it is brilliant that Manchester is hosting the World Championships for the  third time. With it being Olympic year, that will help with our final preparation and qualification for Beijing. Its been a great adventure in Palma and I am confident that Manchester will put on a great show next March and if we achieve there what we have achieved here, then that will be great as we go into the final phase for Beijing.”

“It is great to be here and see for myself the athletes performing on the big day against the best in the World. Quite often by work is behind the scenes working closely with people like Dave and the head coaches in terms of the planning about athletes who are on the programme and it comes to fruition when you see what has been achieved here.”

“It is a great set up here and one British Cycling should be proud of.”
