Evening Session

20060329_Tr_Worlds_MIP_200It was double top for GB in the evening session of the first day of the championships. First Brad Wiggins produced another superb ride to claim the expected gold in the Individual Pursuit, catching Robert Bartko in the process. Then, Shanaze Reade and Vicky Pendleton scorched to victory in the first ever World Championship in the Women's Team Sprint.

Another gold medal chance for the GB team appeared on when the 100% Scottish Team Sprint trio of MacLean, Hoy and Edgar shot round three laps of the track in under 44 seconds to qualify fastest and go into a ride-off for gold against the French. However, in the fastest final of all time, the French turned things round to claim the gold by a tiny margin. For Results and rider reactions, please follow links top and bottom of the page.

Morning Session

Bradley Wiggins qualified fastest in the Men's 4000m Individual Pursuit with a stunning time just under 4 minutes 16 seconds. He qualified almost 5 seconds quicker than second fastest rider, Robert Bartko of Germany, with whom he will contest the final. Wiggins' time was his fastest since his Olympic gold medal winning ride in 2004.

Rob Hayles was seventh in 4:25.669. Wiggins' time was the result of a very steady ride, with a 68 second opening kilometre and then three kilos at just over 62 seconds each - a pace none of his rivals could match.

In the Women's Team Sprint, as expected, Vicky Pendleton and Shanaze Reade qualified fastest and will ride off for gold against the Dutch. Meanwhile Jonny Bellis has been in action in the men's omnium and apart from a bad Scratch race, he has had a 7th and 3rd place in two of the three events so far.
