Men's Omnium

200 metre Time Trial

The opening event at 10am on day 1 of this year's World Championships saw Great Britain’s Olympic Academy Endurance rider, Jonny Bellis, racing in a sprint event, the flying 200 metre time trial. In a field with quite a few out and out sprinters, Jonny did well to finish in 7th place with 11.213

Jonny Bellis, eyes closed, gives it everything to the line in the sprint.

Scratch Race

After the opening sprint event, it was a Scratch race for Jonny although being only a short Scratch race, it wasn’t an event that really suited any particular type of rider. A break got away early on with the likes of Walter Perez but riders of the calibre of Robert Slippens and Jonny Bellis missed it. Slippens tried to cross to it but failed and then Bellis went away on his own. He made ground but was unable to cross the gap on his own and a few laps from the end, was caught and tailed off.

The break of four get away and take a lap within the 5k distance.

Perez justy gets the sprint from a German rider who is a lap down (and on the blue!).

Individual Pursuit

This event more familar territory for Jonny Bellis - last year in the Junior Nationals, he tied with Steven Burke for the title. Despite only being just out of the Junior ranks, and up against some very experienced rivals like six day star Robert Slippens, the Isle of Man rider, did very well to finish in 3rd place with a personal best.

After the session had finished, we spoke to Jonny who said “I’d say that was harder than I expected it would be. I was a little disappointed with the 200 even though it was quicker than training. I missed the move in the scratch race as well when it went away early on and I sort of hesitated a bit and then went. I had quite a big gear on and was closing but needed someone to come with me. I looked behind and saw a couple coming up to me but they didn’t make it and we ran out of laps.”

“I went into the scratch race to ride my own race which didn’t work in a way. I think that took a lot out of me but to do a PB in the Pursuit and finish 3rd was quite pleasing and I’ll just now concentrate on the next few events. The Points race is going to be hard. I have a rough idea of who the top lads are going to be now so in the Points I will have to be watchful and careful”.
