Gold Medal for GB on Day 1 of Sydney World Cup
17th of November, 2006
UCI World Track Cup, Round 1, Sydney (Australia)
2006 World Champion Chris Hoy was triumphant in the Kilometre at the UCI Sydney World Track Cup in Sydney (Australia) today.

Great Britain fielded two riders in the Kilometre, both Olympic Champions and it was Hoy who managed to squeeze out Sydney Olympic Champion Jason Queally by a few hundredths of a second to win the Gold there with Jason in second place riding for SIS, giving the team two riders on the podium.
Of the two riders, Hoy started the quickest, doing an opening lap of 18.357 with Queally only 4th fastest at this point. Hoy was again quickest on the second lap with a split of 13.604 whilst Queally had obviously got up to speed by this point and was second fastest over the second lap.
On the third lap, Hoy started to die and was only the third fastest with a 14.486 to Queally's 14.446, who was the fastest rider on that lap. Hoy continued to die on the last lap, only 4th fastest but doing enough to hold off Queally who was again fastest on that final circuit of the track with a time of 15.272.
Women's Sprint
Silver medallist in the Women's Sprint at the 2006 Track Worlds, and let us not forget the Commonwealth Games Champion this year in Australia, Victoria Pendleton showed just how good her form is at the moment with some super rides in Sydney to go all the way to the final and finish second.
Victoria, World Champion in 2005, was third fastest in qualifying with a time of 11.451 to the 11.449 of the fastest rider, Simona Krupeckaite of Lithunia.
In the 1/8th finals, Victoria had little problem with Oksana Grishina of Russia and it was the same in the Quarter finals when she came up against the formidable Chinese rider, Shuang Guo, and won in two straight rides, the only rider to do so as the rest had to proceed through with a decider.
It was more of the same in the semi final when Victoria came up against a rider she has sprinted against many times, including some Revolution meetings, Yvonne Higgenaar of Holland. The rider from Stotfold, dispensed with her in two straight rides to set up a meeting with World champion, in Natallia Tsylinskya, in the final.
This was a much closer encounter with there being four rides to decide it. One of those, match C, saw Victoria fall off but a rerun was given and in that, Victoria just failed to beat her rival, and it was a silver medal for her in the competition.
Men's Keirin
The only other event Britain contested in Sydney on Day 1, was the Mens Keirin where we had Ross Edgar riding for GB and Matthew Crampton racing for SIS. In round 1, Edgar was 4th as he lost out in the battle won by French legend Arnaud Tournant and the GB rider was sent to the repechages to try and remain in the competition. Crampton meanwhile finished one place higher, 3rd, in his heat won by Olympic Champion Ryan Bayley, and so it was the same for Matthew as he had to go to the reps.
In the reps, Ross Edgar found the speed to win his heat where only the first rider goes through but for Matthew Crampton it was an early exit as he finished second to Aussie Mark French. So it was only one British rider in the second round, Ross Edgar, but for the Scotland racer, the pace of the race was too much and in a heat won by World Champion Theo Bos, Edgar was 5th and it was the minor final for him. There, he found the sparkling form we have seen many times from the Commonwealth Games champion and he won that to finish the competition in 7th place.
