Great Britain Cycling Team Tops Medal Table!

Based on the number of medals won overall, the Great Britain Cycling Team were the number 1 ranked nation at the completion of this years UCI Track Cycling Championships in Bordeaux (France). With six medals to their name, the riders in the Great Britain team did themselves and their team proud, especially after having been away for six weeks at the Commonwealth Games prior to the Worlds.

British Cycling spoke to the Great Britain Cycling Team's Performance director, Dave Brailsford who explained "you have to look at these six medals in the context of the competitions we have ridden in the last three months. We prioritised the Commonwealth Games, performed well there and then it was an unknown for the Worlds because we had to hope the athletes could hold on to their form and see where it got us at the Championships here. If you had offered us before the Championships the results we got here, we'd have taken it." >Read the full interview

Day 4, April 16: Womens Scratch & Keirin | Mens Madison & Sprint cont.

20060416_Worlds_D4_MSprint_125Silver for Craig MacLean:  It was a day when one of Great Britain's longest serving riders, Craig MacLean, did what no other British sprinter had done for a long time --- he challenged the best and came away with a Silver medal in the Match Sprint competition.

Meanwhile, in the Madison, Rob Hayles and Mark Cavendish showed again they were among the best when finishing fourth with only three points separating them from a medal and no medal. Victoria Pendleton was cruelly robbed of a medal chance when hit during her first round repechage but thankfully stayed upright and unhurt.

And finally, Nikki Harris again showed her face at the front of the Women's endurance race and did her best to try and get a medal against older and more experienced rivals.

Day 3, April 15: Womens Sprint cont. | Mens Sprint, Team Pursuit & Scratch

Silver ... justThe Silver lining for Great Britain at the 2006 UCI World Track Championships was that the over whelming feeling  from the riders today was that only Gold is good enough. Today, the Team Pursuit went within hundredths of a second of winning Gold but had to settle for silver and in the Women's Sprint, Victoria Pendleton confirmed her status as one of the top two sprinters in the World. Craig Maclean keeps British hopes alive in the MensSprint whilst Mark Cavendish gave it his all in the Mens Scratch race.  >Reports,Reactions and Pictures

Day 2, April 14: Womens Sprint & Points | Mens Keirin, Pursuit, & Kilometre

Paul ManningFor the third time in his career, Scotland's Chris Hoy has won the World Kilometre Title. It was a performance that no superlative can adequately describe and with Paul Manning's champion performance winning a bronze (pictured left)  in the Pursuit, it was a good day for the British team.

In other events, Victoria Pendleton is through to the semi finals of the Women's Sprint whilst Ross Edgar and Matthew Crampton finished 9th and 10th in the Mens Keirin after they were out gunned in round 2. In the Womens Points, Nikki Harris was 20th after first gaining a lap, attacking again late on and then paying for it later as the pace took its toll.

We also have details of the mornings action where Paul Manning is through to the Bronze medal ride off in the Mens Individual Pursuit, Ross Edgar and Matthew Crampton are through to the second round of the Mens Keirin and Victoria Pendleton sprinted her way to the quarter finals of the Womens Sprint.. >>>>Go There

Day 1, April 13: Womens 500 TT & Pursuit | Mens Points & Team Sprint,

20060413_D1A_Team_Sprint_125The honours on Day 1 for the Great Britain Team went to the Team Sprint squad who were the Silver medallists behind the record breaking French who went under the magic 44 seconds to beat the Brits. In the other events for GB this evening, it was disappointment with the worst place of all for both Chris Newton and Victoria Pendleton, 4th in their respective events, the Mens Points and Womens 500.

In the morning session, Great Britain had three riders on the track at Bordeaux to kick off this years UCI World Track Championships in France. In the Women's Pursuit, England's Bronze medal winning hero from the Commonwealth Games, Emma Davies was again in action alongside Wendy Houvenhagel who had won the UCI's World Track Cup competition. And then in the first heat for the Mens Points qualifier, Chris Newton was in action for Great Britain. >Report, reactions & pictures
