Riding for Wales, Ross Sander is looking for his first major success as a senior after winning a silver medal at the Junior World Track Championships in the Team Pursuit. Not that he got to get on the podium as he crashed along with Steven Burke and ended up in hospital with a broken wrist.

He has though recovered well from that and the Sydney World Cup and Commonwealth Games will be his first major events in 2006. Looking ahead to the Commonwealth Games, Ross says that he'll be wearing the Welsh colours in the Points and Scratch races and admits the experience will help him a great deal in the future.

"It will be the biggest competition I have competed in and it will be a new experience to be staying in a athletes village and stuff like that. I'm more exited than nervous tho!"

Ross is also enjoying the time in Australia saying "the weather here is sooo good! It really helps you get motivated for a hard days training when you wake up to a beautiful day and the sound of the sea! There is also a track about 35 km away."

Talking about the races there, he explained "there are some crits which we take part in which usually have quite good quality fields and they are good little training exercises for us. I really like them because it breaks up the monotony of training!"

As for highlights, he says "my highlights since Christmas has just been training and being in Oz!"

And finally, the best and worst about being in Australia? The best things are the weather and the beautiful town we are staying in! It just makes it so much more enjoyable and easier to train harder when the weather is like it is! So far there hasn't been a 'worst' thing about leaving home but I'll let you know when there is one!"

Thanks to Ross and good luck in Melbourne 2006.
